2 Wim Crouwel 1) During 1967, Wim Crouwel was one of the founders of a design studio which was called Total Design, which is now currently known as Total Identity. Today Total Identity has over 150 designers spread among 6 cities. Also during this year Wim Crouwel designed the new Alphabet. C rouw el 2) His first ever computer he owned was in ) He designed his first poster in It was actually difficult to avoid Wim Crouwel s work. In the 1960 s the Netherlands were filled with posters, catalogues, stamps and telelphone books designed by Wim Crouwel. 4) He went to Amsterdam where he enrolled himself at what is now the Gerrit Rietveld Academie ( ) and focused more on Typography. Wim Crouwel is a Dutch graphic designer, type designer and typographer. He studied typography at Gerrit Rietveld Academie in Amsterdam. He began his professional career as an abstract painter. His nickname is Gridnik, the reason for this was because he was obsessed with grids. 5) In 1954, he quit painting and hunted down work as a freelance designer, inspired by Swiss design. Wim Crouwel often like texts that are readable, clear and simplistic. Wim Crouwel relationship towards Helvetica is neutral.
3 Massimo Vignelli Massimo Vignelli was an Italian designer who was born in Milan in His belief was, If you can design one thing, you can design everything, and this was shown in a range of his work. His work covers nearly every field of design including advertising, identity, packaging, product, industrial, interior and architectural design. 1) Massimo Vignelli studied art and architecture in Milan, until he came to America in ) He favors a clarity in design and is a huge fan of using Helvetica, which can be seen in much of his work. 3) Massimo Vignelli work have been published all around the world. In addition he has several items in the permanent collections of various museums including the Museum of Modern Art, the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Cooper-Hewitt Museum. 4) His first major step into the field of indentity and branding was through Unimark International, which quickly became one of the largest design studios in the world. 5) Massimo Vignelli designed the map for the New York Subway and also the logo for AmericanAirlines.
4 Erik Spiekermann Erik Spiekermann is a German typographer and designer. Currently he is a professor at the University Of the Arts Bremen. He studied art history at Berlin s Free University. Spiekermann is considered to have a very infuential personality in the field of graphic design. 1) During the years 1972 and 1979, he worked as a freelance Graphic Designers in London before returning to Berlin. This was before he found Meta Design, which is known for branding and brand strategy. Unfortunately in 2001 Spiekermann left. 2) During the late 1980 s Spikermann launched the FontShop. 3) Some of his important works such as commercial typefaces and corporate design programmes include Berliner Grotesk, ITC Officina Sans, Nokia Sans and FF Meta Serif. 4) In 1979, Spiekermann returned to Berlin and in partnership with two designers founded MetaDesign. 5) e earned Lifetime achievement award from German Design Prize for his generous contribution to design industry.
5 Neville Brody 3) In 1994 Brody established his own studio in London with the help of Fwa Richards. The success of his first studio led to the founding of multiple branches across Europe, such as in Paris, Barcelona and Berlin. Projects handled by the studio included advanced packaging and website design. Neville Brody is an English graphic designer, typographer and art director. He received his early education from Minchenden Grammar school focusing on A-Level Art. Neville Brody is an graduate of the London College of Printing and Hornsey College of Art. Currently, he is the new head of the Communication Art and Design department at the Royal College of Art. Neville Brody is probably the best known graphic designer of his generation. Brody is often referred to as a star typographer, Brody has designed a number of very wellknown typfaces. 1) It was his work on maganzines that definitely recognised his reputation as one of the world s leading graphic designer. 2) Brody began his career as a record cover designer. 4) Brody is one of the founding members of Fontworks and the leading website the FontShop, which is an international manufacturer of digital typefaces. It is one of the largest digitaltype foundries. He designed numerous notable typefaces for the website. 5) During his college years one of his queer postage stamp design that featured Queen s head sideways, almost had him expelled from the college. Despite the threat of being expelled he continued to explore the new boundaries in graphic design. Achievements Album covers for Clock DVA, The Bongos, Bush Tetras The Face magazine ( ) Arena magazine ( ) Created many typefaces. An example of this would be FF world, FF Blur, FF Autoface and many more Designed the typeface for the England football team kit.
6 PAULA AGE 86 S C H E R AMBITION WAS TO BECOME A PAINTER TRUE INSPIRATION AUTHOR GRAPHIC DESIGNER TEACHER SCHOOL OF VISUAL ARTS PAINTER Paula Scher is an American graphic designer, painter and art educator in design. In addition Paula Scher was the first female head at Pentagram, which is a design studio. She studied at the Tyler School of Art, Elkins Park, Pennsylvania. During this time she earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts in She is also credited for reviving historical typefaces and design styles. 1) Paula Scher moved to New York City and took her first job as a design artist for Random House s children s book division. 2) In 1992, she became a design educator who teached at the School of Visual Arts( SVA) in New York. Furthermore, she taught for over two years. 3) As an artist she is known for her large-scale paintings of maps, covered with solid hand-painted labelling and information. 4) She claims the first thing that she fully designed was a children s book, which was called The Brownstone. 5) Her true ambition was to become a painter, but she wasn t good at drawing. She tried many different things, which eventually introduced her to Graphic Design Graphic design.
7 Stefan Sagmeister Stefan Sagmeister is an Austrian Graphic designer and typographer. He studied graphic design at the University of Applied Arts Vienna. Sagmeister began his design career at the age of 15 at Alphorn, which was an Austrian youth magazine. 1) Sagmeister first attempt at applying for the University of Applied Arts Vienna was denied. The reason for this was because of his amateur drawings, but his application was accepted on his second attempt. 2) Stefan Sagmeister has designed album covers for Lou Reed, Ok Go, The Rolling Stones, David Byrne, Jay Z, Aerosmith and Pat Metheny. 3) He enrolled himself in an engineering college. However, he later changed his mind and opted for graphic designing course. 4) He was landed a job as a typographer in an advertising agency in Hong Kong during the year ) The design he created for the Zinker s Moutains Of Madness won him four Grammy nominations.
8 David Carson David Carson is an American graphic designer, art director and surfer. David Carson is known for his creative magazine designs. His unusual and experimental graphic style revolutionized the graphic designing scene in America during 1990s. 1) He is claimed to be the godfather of grunge typography which he employed continually in his magazine issues. 2) He was the art director of the magazine Ray Gun, in which he introduced the advanced typographies and different layouts. 3) He took up a teaching job at a Californian high-school where he taught for several years. 4) Besides his talent in graphic design, he was a professional surfer. in 1989 he was ranked the 9th best surfer in the world. 5) He signed contract with a host of major company clients, including Nike, Pepsi Cola, Ray Bans, Levi Strauss and MTV Global among others.
9 Max Miedinger Max Miedinger was an Swiss typeface designer. Max Miedinger was born on the 24 December 1910 in Zurich, Switzerland, he died on the 8 March 1980, Zürich, Switzerland. 1) He was famous for creating the Neue Haas Grotesk typeface in 1957 that was renamed Helvetica in which achieved instant global success. 2) When Max Miedinger was sixteen he became a beginner typesetter for Jacques Bollmann at a book printing office in Zürich. 3) Max Miedinger worked for a company called Global as a typographer. He worked as a typepographer for ten years. 4) In 1956 Miedinger became a freelance graphic designer for a year. 5) Miedinger enrolled in the School of Arts and Crafts.
10 Johannes Gutenberg Johannes Gutenberg was a German blacksmith, goldsmith, printer, and publisher who introduced printing to Europe. His introduction of mechanical movable type printing to Europe started the Printing Revolution and is widely regarded as the most important invention of the second time, the important event which helped in the modern period of human history. Gutenberg in 1439 was the first European to use the printing press and movable type in Europe. Gutenberg Press The printing press was invented in the Holy Roman Empire by the German Johannes Gutenberg around 1440, based on existing screw presses. Notes 1) The british libary has 3 million books 2) Books were written before Gutenberg was created Cons of writting - Expensive - Someone had to write it - Mistakes happened
11 Italic Italic type is slightly slanted to the right Letter Spacing- Adjustment of the horizontal white space between the lettter in a block of text Bold Sans-serif Serif Ascender Descender X-height lower case UPPER CASE Bold type is a text that is darkned or heavy Without extensions or sharp ends added typeface Withour extensions or sharp added to typrface A letter form that extends above midline which is the X-hieght Letter that extends or descender below the baseline is called descender The distance between the baseline of linetype, the factor is for identification and readabilty Low uncapped with semi-form Big capped letters with full form Kerning- The adjustment of specific pairs of letters to imporve spacing and fit Justification- Justified type has a very geometric apperance, created by both the right and left margins between aligned, increasing and/or reducing the space between words, characters and the width of the characters themselves Leading- leading is a spacing between the baseline of the typrface Tracking- It is the space between groups of letters rather thane individual letters. Vertical Text- vertical text are stacked letters, either lower case or upper case. The ascender and desender make vertical appear un even, varied and looks like its falling.
