2 OBJECTIVE AND OVERVIEW Following the successful completion of the five Summer Schools that took place between 2011 and 2016 in various cities, a successive Summer Program has been organized for 2017 with the initiative of Al Turath, IRCICA, National Building Heritage Center in cooperation with center of Handicraft in Marrakesh Mohammed 5th Establishment in the framework of their work programs on urban studies and architectural heritage. The Program, founded in 2010, is an academic program aimed to underscore the importance of preserving, promoting and encouraging the economic, cultural and touristic development of urban heritage in Islamic countries. It is designed to complement the studies of advanced students as well as young educators and professionals with lectures given by key international experts. Also, participants will have opportunity to visit important site from the UNESCO World Heritage List in the region. In conclusion, education and training will be provided through the work in actual projects in architecture, restoration, urban design and planning The Islamic Urban Heritage Research, Preservation and Management School will focus on the implementation components: works in workshops. o o Technical practice in workshops, for design of Wood, Gypsum and Zeleej. Technical practice in workshops, for the restorations of Wood, Gypsum and Zeleej. MODES OF OPERATION: o Participants are from the Kingdom of Morocco, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, Turkey, Malaysia, UAE, Oman, Bahrain, Portugal, Spain, Bosnia and Herzegovina and other countries o Nine days workshop in Marrakesh o One day visit to Fez o Introduction and training work with traditional materials for handicrafts o Study trip to visit WH site in Marrakesh and Fez o Lodging single or double rooms in the hotel o Coordination center: Marrakesh PROGRAM REQUIREMENTS AND CREDITS The program is designed for graduate and undergraduate students and young professionals, who are trained in architecture, urban planning, archaeology, art history, history, civil engineering or project management. 2

3 THE PARTICIPATION CERTIFICATE Participants who successfully complete the program will be awarded a Certificate issued and signed by: Al Turath Foundation and Research Centre for Islamic History, Art and Culture (IRCICA) Istanbul. THE SUMMER PROGRAM PERIOD AND DATES The Summer Program will be organized mainly in ten days July 19 29, 2017 including work in workshops and evening lectures and panels, and study trips. o o First part, nine days in workshops on the practice on site, for design and restorations of Wood, Gypsum and working with Zeleej. Three days working with Wood. Three days for Gypsum.Three days working with Zeleej, afternoon sites visits in Marrakesh. Second part, one day a study trip visiting World Heritage sites in Fes. Working languages: English, Arabic PROGRAM FEE The Tuition fee for the full Program is $ 3000 for undergraduate and $ 3750 for others per participant. This includes field trips transportation, daily meals, and fees for instructors, and course materials. Each participant should cover his/her travel expenditures to reach program entry place Casablanca. The Program administration can provide all necessary assistance. In case of taking two summer programs 25% will be assigned to the second program fee. VISAS Needed visas should be provided by each participant personally. APPLICATION The deadline for the application and payments is June 19, 2017 Applying for the Program implies acceptance of the terms and conditions of the Summer School. Note: Different sequences of the program can be subject to change due to visa regulations, weather conditions. 3

Its influence was felt throughout the western Muslim world, from North Africa to Andalusia. It has several impressive monuments dating from that period: the Koutoubiya Mosque, the Kasbah, the battlements, monumental doors, gardens, etc. Later architectural jewels include the Bandiâ Palace, the Ben Youssef Madrasa, the Saadian Tombs, several great residences and Place Jamaâ El Fna, a veritable open air theatre. 5

6 Medina of Fez (July 27, 2016) Founded in the 9th century and home to the oldest university in the world, Fez reached its height in the 13th 14th centuries under the Marinids, when it replaced Marrakesh as the capital of the kingdom. The urban fabric and the principal monuments in the medina madrasas, fondouks, palaces, residences, mosques and fountains date from this period. Although the political capital of Morocco was transferred to Rabat in 1912, Fez has retained its status as the country's cultural and spiritual centre. 6

Currently he is affiliated with the University of Sarajevo as the head of the Doctorate Program in Architecture. Also, he was lecturing at more than 30 universities worldwide. He is the recipient of the Aga Khan Award for conservation of the Old Town of Mostar (1986), and five other architectural awards. He served as the leading consultant for the Aga Khan Trust for Culture, Geneva ( ); the World Monuments Fund, New York ( ); and made a several missions for ICOMOS Paris. He is member of National Commission to Preserve National Monuments of Bosnia and Herzegovina since January 2016, The author of 67 realized restoration or rehabilitation or reconstruction and contemporarydesign projects of different size and four urban preservation plans. The author or co author of 16 books and 35 articles related to preservation of urban and architectural heritage, and also author of the Nomination dossier for the World Heritage property Old Bridge Area of the Old Town of Mostar (2005). 9

10 Program Participants _DR. HASSAN RADOINE Dr. Hassan Radoine is an architecture curator, critic, author and consultant. He is currently the Director of the Ecole Nationale d'architecture Morocco. A former Fulbright Scholar, he holds a M.Sc. and Ph.D. ( ) in Architecture, University of Pennsylvania. As a Prince of Wales' Scholar, he received an M.Phil. in Architecture, the Prince of Wales Institute of Architecture in London (1997). His Diploma of Architect is from the Ecole Nationale d'architecture in Rabat (1993). He has been an active professional consultant for international bodies such as UNESCO, UN Habitat, ICCROM, MCC, Aga Khan Award of Architecture, and World Bank. His research and practice interest includes Urban Planning, Urban Conservation & Development, Contemporary Architecture and Urbanism in the MENA region. He was also the curator of the Exhibition on Contemporary Architecture and Engineering in the Middle East organized by the Center of Architecture, American Institute of Architects (AIA), in New York, He published several chapters in books, journal papers, and technical reports.
