2 Subject: Re: William Arthur Cutts Wilber moved to WI between 1873 and 1874, based on the birth places of his children in the censuses. Wilber's father, William H. died in 1874, and that's probably why his family and probably his brothers' families left Conn. at that time. That father, William H. was born in Sheffield, Yorkshire, England. Wife was "Anna Lee" also born in England. William H.'s father, "William," was born in Nottinghamshire and died in Hucknall, Nottinghamshire. William H.'s mother, Hannah Willmot, died in Torkard, Nottingham. ************** Colby Phonograph (Colby, Clark County, Wis.) 12/26/ Unity - Dec. 26, 1883 W. F. Cutts had the misfortune to lose his only cow last week. She became entangled in her rope and threw herself during the night, and next morning he found her dead. ************** More About Wilber F. ( ) Source: Colby Phonograph (Colby, Clark County, Wis.) 04/12/1888 Cutts, George W. (2 JUN APR 1888) Died, at Abbotsford, Wis., on the evening of the 5th inst., George W., eldest son of W. F. and Lydia Cutts, aged 18 years, 10 months and 3 days. While at work about some of the machinery in Spaulding s mill at Withee, Clark County, George s clothing became entangled in one of the shafts, and wound up. Many rushed to the apartment to inquire the cause of the sound, when at a glance, all was plainly told! There, on the floor, lay his arm, and under the machine still in motion, lay his mangled and bruised body. The passing train was signaled, and his body taken to Abbotsford, where Dr. Von Neupert of Colby and Clark of Unity were summoned, who amputated his right arm. Upon examination his left arm was found to be dislocated at the shoulder and wrist, when dislocations were immediately reduced. George survived the shock about five hours, his father and mother being present at his death, having been telegraphed at an early moment. His remains were taken to Unity on the evening train, where the many friends of the deceased gathered to proffer assistance to the bereft parents. In George, Unity has lost one of its pleasing and promising young men. Kind, amiable and courteous, he won the respect of all who knew him. As a member of the Good Templar s order, he was an earnest and diligent worker, which order appeared in uniform to follow him to his last resting place. The badge presented by the Order, upon which were engraved a wreath of flowers and in guilt, G. W. C. was retained by the parents as a souvenir. The bereft parents and relatives have the deepest sympathy of their many friends of this locality. (There was a large lumber yard which was supplied by the mills along the railroad nearby. The large mills of D. J. Spaulding were located on the Black River, about two miles from the village.) There was an open balcony inside along the south wall which made part of the building 2 story. They carried the usual hardware supplies, bolts, nails, cookware, lanterns & lamps, jack knives, harness repairs, etc. Mr. Cutts was the tin smith and also did furnace installations and repairs. He had the equipment to make stove and furnace pipes in a room at the back of the store. There were piles of water tanks and farm implements outside along the north side of the store. The Bros. had to chase us kids out of the water tanks about 3 times a day. I think they enjoyed it. Retrieved on 10/24/2017 from FIRE AT THE HOTEL, by Wayne John Fuller It was afternoon of a bright autumn day in late October or early November of 1936, when the Unity village fire alarm sounded at the end of a school day. The view from the school's windows showed a small column of smoke rising to the northwest. A small fire had started at the hotel on the corner Activity around the old hotel was said to be like that around an ant hill. Smoke was coming from a couple of second floor windows and from under the eaves at about the midpoint of the building on the south side. The volunteer fire department had their two lines out and working. Furniture and furnishings were coming out of the building in streams from second floor windows and the doors of the first floor. The local plumber, one Art Cutts, always identifiable by the pipe wrench hanging from a loop on his striped coveralls, was on the roof diligently chopping a hole to ventilate and access the source of the fire. The fire was totally out after about 30 minutes. Fire damage to the hotel was relatively minor, a couple of partitions needed repairs and so did the hole in the roof. Considerable damage was done to door casings and stops when pieces of furniture and fixtures larger than the door openings came through anyway. Obituary: Cutts, Arthur (15 Feb Nov. 1943)
