2 -iii- INTRODUCTION Born in Germany of Anglo-German parentage, Clive (Helmut) von Cardinal emigrated to Canada in 1929 to study agriculture and take up farming. Between 1932 and 1933 he operated his own farm near Yarmouth, Nova Scotia. In 1935 he entered university to study German literature. After completing his M.A. at McGill in 1941, he accepted a teaching position in Manitoba. He returned to university soon after. In 1944 he became editor of Canadians All, a magazine dealing with Canadian ethnic groups. He worked at the same time as director of the Canadian Cultural Research Institute in Toronto. From 1944 to 1946 he was a fellow at Victoria College, teaching courses in German language and literature. In the meantime he was also studying towards his Ph.D. at the University of Toronto, which he received in During the course of his career, he taught in the Department of German at a number of universities, including McMaster, Queen's, Waterloo College, University of Manitoba and University of Calgary. While teaching, Cardinal also became involved in German Canadian and ethnic community life. He was a founding member of the Canadian Society for German Relief and editor of its bulletin. He participated in the founding of the Research Centre for Canadian Ethnic Studies at the University of Calgary and for a number of years served as one of the editors of the Bulletin of Canadian Ethnic Studies. He became involved in particular in bibliographical research on Canadian ethnic groups. He published extensively in the area of German Canadian literature and also contributed to our understanding of Polish and Scandinavian Canadian literature. In publications and in papers he presented at conferences he argued for greater recognition of the ethnic contribution to Canadian life. At the same time he worked for increased cultural exchange between Canada and Europe, in particular between Germany and Canada and between Canada and the Scandinavian countries. In recognition of his work, he was, among other awards, granted the Centennial Silver Medal. Presented in 1987 by Clive von Cardinal of Victoria, B.C.
