1 2012 Annual Conference Award Recipients Ohio Association of Extension Professionals Appreciation Awards Presented by Keith Smith and Pat Brinkman Luetta Prout Erie County Luetta Prout of Castalia has given 60+ years of service to OSU Extension in Erie County. Her children, Sharon, Steve, Susan and Sandra, and grandchildren continue her volunteer tradition. Luetta has served on the Erie County Extension Advisory Board for four terms as well as on the 4-H Committee. She has served as a 4-H Advisor and Key Leader and has assisted with numerous 4-H events over the years. Luetta has been an Extension homemaker for over 50 years teaching at numerous local, district and state meetings. Mrs. Prout has been a Grange member for 60+ years and has been the heart and soul of the United Church of Christ in Milan for over 60 years. She has assisted with the Cold Creek Celebration for 36 years and was active in the schools many years. She continues to be a role model for her incredible energy, work ethic and commitment to service even at the age of 83!! David Jones Belmont County David Jones has been an active OSU Extension supporter/volunteer for over 25 years in Belmont County. He and his wife, Grace, live in Flushing and have four children Crystal, Dave, Mike and Danny. Dave has served as Chair of the Belmont County Extension Advisory Committee 8 years and was instrumental in getting the Extension Office moved to a safer location. He serves as a liaison with the county commissioners and is a regular spokesman for Extension at local and state legislative events. David has assisted in coordinating ANR programs in Ohio and Virginia and has given leadership in raising over $670,000 to construct 7 livestock barns at the county fairgrounds. He donates his auctioneering skills for county fair livestock sales, camp and other community events and is active in his church, Rotary Club and other organizations and events. He is a tremendous asset to Belmont County Extension. Scioto County Commissioners Vernal G. (Skip) Riffe, III; Tom Reiser; Mike Crabtree Scioto County Commissioners Vern (Skip) Riffe, Tom Reiser and Mike Crabtree have provided unwavering support to OSU Extension in Scioto County for many years through many unprecedented challenges. In the midst of Scioto County being the only county in Ohio in a state of fiscal emergency, they declined the easy way out and held strong in their belief and support in the importance of funding Extension. During a recent year when forced to give a minimal cut, they secured a one-time grant to give Extension additional funding. All three have been involved in Extension programs as 4-H judges, participating in Extension programs, and involving Extension staff in local committees. They have been involved in the Extension Advisory Committee, legislative visits and many events. Each one has been heavily involved in service to their community at the regional, state, and national level. Their support is greatly appreciated by the Scioto County Extension staff for the efforts they have demonstrated over many years, but particularly during the last three years of challenges. ESP Friend of Extension Award Presented by Keith Smith and Gwen Wolford Andrea Mahone Mahoning County Andrea Mahone is the Community Youth Director for Youngstown and Mahoning County. She works closely with the Youngstown Mayor s office, the county juvenile judge s court, and several community organizations in Mahoning County. She is a member of the Youngstown City School Board. She was instrumental in implementing youth programming to address the issue of gang violence in Youngstown. As a two-year member of the county Extension Advisory Committee, she has become familiar with other Extension programs, and has been an advocate for

2 Extension in her work throughout the county. Andrea has a weekly television talk show, where she invites members of organizations and community leaders to promote their organizations and their events and activities. She has had Extension personnel on her show several times, the first being in 2005 and as recently as September of this year. When Extension s funding depended on the passage of a sales tax issue in the county, Andrea worked tirelessly to promote Extension and the need for funding the office and the sales tax issue passed! Andrea often promotes Extension programming through presentations at conferences. She has appeared at a number of state and national conferences (including the Tri-State Diversity Conference and PILD) to tell of her experiences with 4-H. She is an advisor of an urban 4-H club, and she has seen the positive changes in youth that come about through participation in 4-H activities. Andrea has been referred to as a million-dollar advocate for Extension! Friend of Community Development Award Presented by Greg Davis and Joe Lucente The Toledo Regional Chamber of Commerce (represented by Ken Piel) The Toledo Regional Chamber of Commerce has partnered in the delivery of the Toledo Local Government Leadership Academy since This working relationship has encouraged, supported and promoted good government through a curriculum geared towards leadership and decision making skills in the public sector. The Chamber has played an integral role in the delivery of the program as well as recruiting, hosting, and recognizing program graduates with a formal ceremony at the conclusion of each class year. ESP Retiree Service Award Presented by Keith Smith and Gwen Wolford Clarence Cunningham, retired Associate Director, OSU Extension Clarence retired from OSU Extension many years ago, but has continued to stay actively engaged with the organization. He was instrumental in fundraising efforts for the Nationwide and Ohio Farm Bureau 4-H Center, has served on the 4-H Foundation Board, and has continued to advocate for Extension. This year at ESP s national conference in October, he was presented with a Silver Key Award for his contributions to the national ESP Endowment Fund. Clarence has also been a guiding force for the Gist Leadership Chair leadership efforts and works directly with Keith Smith. Without a doubt, Clarence is a deserving recipient of this recognition!
