8 2011 STATE ARCHITECTURE AWARDS STATE JURY CITATIONS 2011 Awards Jury Director: Malcolm Middleton OAM FRAIA Colorbond Award for Steel Architecture Category Heron Island Research Centre: dm2architecture This remote location project is a rebuild and expansion of facilities completed only 4 years earlier and destroyed by fire. The revised cluster of buildings uses the original footings to create a lightweight podium that links the cluster of labs. The project explores a new expression of lightweight materiality through the extensive use of incombustible polycarbonate to walls and covered walkways resulting in reduced energy load and enhanced internal light levels. The final grouping of residential buildings utilises strong simple forms to create visual interest and variety Lavarack Barracks 3 rd Combat Engineering Regiment, 4 th Field Precincts: BVN Architecture This large scale project made up of over 80 smaller and some more substantial buildings and adaptive reuse of existing structures is a consistently well researched and environmentally and visually flexible suite of solutions to the individual building requirements. The strict palette of materials builds on earlier stages and provides a comfortable and skilful delivery of many building types within the highly controlled financial, functional and bureaucratic constraints of the armed services culture. The buildings offer built form variety and environmental performance based on strong principles of cross ventilation and low maintenance. Indoor outdoor areas are covered where possible between spaces and are utilised for casual interaction and outdoor exercise. The end result is a successful complex of simple execution with the potential for further density and built form development from future stages.

10 2011 STATE ARCHITECTURE AWARDS STATE JURY CITATIONS 2011 Awards Jury Director: Malcolm Middleton OAM FRAIA Art and Architecture Category 53 Albert Street landlines : nettleton tribe partnership pty ltd This project addresses the challenge of converting a large and unforgiving structured car park to a place with urban streetscape values. The project was approached through the establishment of an appropriate project budget and a disciplined collaboration between architect, artist and urban art fabricator. Scott Street Apartments Melaleuca: Jackson Teece Architecture The Scott Street Apartment concept has delivered an integrated and strongly expressed eastern elevation art wall that works as a streetscape element, sunscreen, privacy screen and interior form maker for these top end residences. The cast concrete forms are carefully considered to minimise the mass of the material and reflect the natural river edge conditions of the mangroves that form part of the nearby precinct. 11 2011 STATE ARCHITECTURE AWARDS STATE JURY CITATIONS 2011 Awards Jury Director: Malcolm Middleton OAM FRAIA Commercial Architecture Category One Short Street: Inarc Design One Short Street delivers a high standard revitalisation of the main entrance to an existing neglected commercial building. The architects have approached the project by stripping back the existing building fabric to expose and make a visual feature of the existing concrete structure allowing a high degree of existing building reuse. The external edges of the site are reinvented through a skillful use of landscape and streetscape to create a significant repositioning of the urban setting as well as the building fabric. The Port Office: Thompson Adsett + Studio 39 This competition winning design for the Port of Brisbane has created a unique headquarters and public identity for the client. Employees enjoy high levels of amenity and 360 degree views of the bay and the Port. The organic aesthetic of curving balconies has been carefully manipulated to optimise solar shading and assist in defining the architectural identity of building. The office levels are organised around an elliptical atrium and connecting staircases. Below these levels a generous publically accessible ground level is punctuated by suspended meeting pods which reflect the proportion of shipping containers. Many sustainable features have been integrated into the building they are well expressed and present a legible model for freestanding commercial developments.

12 Ecosciences Precinct: HASSELL This is commercial architecture on a grand scale, bringing together 1000 scientists from eight locations into a single collaborative research environment of 50,000 square metres. The facility is comprised of three near-parallel wings separated by landscaped courtyards, the whole enveloped by a perforated veil that filters daylight and mitigates thermal load. A transverse spine links the wings, amalgamating common areas to form an active street that provides a reference for building navigation and encourages interaction between the often reclusive user groups. The highly rational arrangement of various laboratories, office spaces and support areas, belies the complexity of the facility s program and the masterly hand of the architects responsible. Calamvale Hotel: Brand and Slater Architects Surrounded by two arterial roads and a long western frontage this hostile environment is shielded by a unique experience that is both calming and surprising. The building form folds, juts, pops and erodes to manipulate light, shade and landscape. This clever yet simple composition delivers a multifunctional dining environment, a new garden terrace and a dramatic entry experience. The internal volume is complemented by the use of traditional external materials and visual clues such as landscape and a robust galvanised steel structure. Filtered light is softened by layered timber battens that clad the ceiling soffit. The northern facade opens up to a grassed court completing this contemporary transformation. Castaways Resort & Spa: Edge Architecture The resuscitation of tourism infrastructure is an important and ongoing requirement for relevance and commercial success. This is particularly important for assets in the tropical zone where extremes of climate and heavy wear and tear require renewal over short time frames. The Mission Beach frontage for the Castaways Resort has been skilfully repositioned as a major element of the resort experience with the public space renewed with a tactile and subtle interplay of new timber elements, pools and integrated place making concepts. A new operational standard will now allow for a more substantial upgrade to be established in a manner that allows the existing asset to be repositioned to a new and more internationally focussed clientele. Lightspace: Stephen Cameron This adaptive reuse of an unloved industrial building has been sensitively executed within a highly constrained budget. A simple yet strong aesthetic complements the bones of the structure through the considered selection of contemporary materials and innovative detailing. The completed project delivers a surprising and flexible workspace for multi tenant occupation with a refreshing new multifunctional event space, adding to the vibrant entertainment grain of this part of Brisbane. AM60: Donovan Hill The eroded podium and protruding 23 storey commercial tower provides both the public and tenants with a unique place in which opportunities are created for interaction. Strategic planning and a combination of materials, textures and

14 colours applied to soffits and facades generate light and shade in a rich tapestry rarely experienced in the local commercial office market. The podium is scaled to contradict, with compression to Albert Street and a generosity of volume to Margaret Street which reveals its context and exposes the public life within. The tower form creates a visual and tactile experience through the use of green concrete shelves and white light prisms in contrast with the glazed brick form which is moderated by an intricate spandrel pattern system. Opposite Lock Townsville: Guymer Bailey Architects Pty Ltd This simple commercial project delivers a strong visual identity in a generally bland commercial street setting by exploring a simple and effective solution to the street presentation and the challenging western orientation. The program is one of commercial sales simplicity for four wheel drive enthusiasts. The solution provides initial visual interest and lifestyle appeal whilst embedding a night time backlit panorama of outdoor experiences to allow the building to attract interest outside opening hours. 15 2011 STATE ARCHITECTURE AWARDS STATE JURY CITATIONS 2011 Awards Jury Director: Malcolm Middleton OAM FRAIA Enduring Architecture Category Riverside Centre: Harry Seidler & Associates Riverside Centre represented the first major engagement with the river through a large site amalgamation with public space around it, a city address and an active river promenade that established connections upstream and downstream. The iconic tower design was strongly derivative of the international style that reflected the Seidler identity across most of Australia s capital cities utilising sunscreening, superior materials, rationalised construction systems and a generous public lobby space with visibility through to the river. The project was a benchmark for the energetic investment era that followed throughout the Brisbane CBD. Wickham Terrace Car Park: James Birrell Architect Wickham Terrace Car Park remains an iconic building in the Brisbane CBD through its creative and well executed exploration of a utilitarian car park form. This is achieved through the powerful and expressive use of off form concrete as almost a single material solution for the site. The functional structural system grows into the external expression of the heavily textured and modelled breton brut concrete walls and vehicle guards to establish a memorable urban presence on the steep site and creates an engagement with the urban setting that surrounds it. The project delivers an important and still largely unknown vertical link from Wickham Terrace directly to Central station and Anzac Park and despite repeated alterations by the operator of the arrival and departure ramps the functional simplicity of the up and down ramps remains in its original form.

17 2011 STATE ARCHITECTURE AWARDS STATE JURY CITATIONS 2011 Awards Jury Director: Malcolm Middleton OAM FRAIA Heritage Category Rockhampton School of Arts: Riddel Architecture This important building has been rescued from potential destruction due to failing foundations and the resultant lack of occupation. The project team successfully stabilised and repositioned the masonry structure and adapted the simple and well proportioned internal spaces for new administrative functions ensuring the building remains relevant in its central city position. The upper level balcony engages comfortably with the street and has scope for further enhancement with appropriate lighting. Cairns Cruise Terminal: Arkhefield and Total Project Group Architects in Association An important addition to the urban, cultural and commercial mix of the Cairns CBD the heritage listed waterfront shed has been recovered and repositioned as a city asset of substance. A rigorous process of built form interpretation combined with a flexible installation of the functional requirements of an international port of entry delivers a flexible facility with potential for significant commercial and cultural contribution to the city from its waterfront site. The structural challenges of the brief are comprehensively dealt with in a manner that enhances the buildings integrity and usefulness. Barracks: Arkhefield Highly successful and appropriate reuse of the former Petrie Terrace Police Barracks, stables and gaol. New buildings and structures have been

18 sympathetically designed and integrated with the original Barracks without loss of cultural heritage significance. Much of the existing fabric has been retained and/or adapted appropriately for the new use as well as meeting the current Australian Standards and BCA requirements. The architect has successfully rejuvenated a derelict site and provided Brisbane with a popular meeting and social destination. Interpretation has been incorporated to explain the former use of the site as well as evidence of the footing locations of the early gaol buildings which had been demolished many years earlier. Radon Laboratory: Bud Brannigan Architects Retaining sections of the external structure and roof of the former Radon Laboratory, the architect has transformed an unused building into a welcoming and delightful public gathering place within the Alumni Court adjoining the Great Court at the University of Queensland. The new shade structure is a delicate and elegant addition which complements the building s popular new use as an outdoor garden gathering space. Significantly the adaptation has opened views and vistas to and from the Great Court which has reinforced the intent of the original Hennessy, Hennessy & Co master plan. Don Roderick Award for Heritage is awarded to: Cairns Cruise Terminal: Arkhefield and Total Project Group Architects in Association State Commendation for Heritage is awarded to: Rockhampton School of Arts: Riddel Architecture

19 2011 STATE ARCHITECTURE AWARDS STATE JURY CITATIONS 2011 Awards Jury Director: Malcolm Middleton OAM FRAIA Interior Architecture Category 1201 Aquarius: Architects North This small 33 sq site adaptive reuse has carefully addressed and negotiated approval through a complex body corporate process. The end result delivers a significant repositioning of a former hotel room to an elegant and considered living space. Small scale design decisions offer flexible living arrangements and responsive settings for the sole occupant client. Although not a low budget outcome the project successfully explores and delivers a well detailed and high quality small scale accommodation space. UQ Gatton Lecture Theatre 106: Ceccato Hall + Associates Architects Theatre 106 is a sophisticated reworking of a degraded but well conceived original lecture space that skilfully presents the space as a welcoming and contemporary facility. The internal volume exploits the mature landscape of which it is now part. Through a balanced use of new materials and adjustable light levels combined with state of the art technology the steeply tiered room delivers a space that will enhance the learning experience for another generation of Gatton students. AECOM Workplace: BVN Architecture This office fit out provides almost 800 staff with a highly equitable working environment. Views to the outside are maintained for all work spaces whilst generous breakout and common spaces, interlinked cleverly with staggered voids, effectively connect the office across five levels. Excellent use of colour, materials, internal planting and spatial variation create this impressive space capable of developing a rewarding office culture for the client.

20 Nudgee College Tierney Auditorium: m3architecture The architects have pushed the boundaries of their artistic expression with the creation of the internal three dimensional mirrored and fibre optic lighting concepts to the walls in the auditorium and the plaster ceiling form at the entry. The adaptive reuse of this former sports building has produced an exceptionally good result for the client through the minimised requirement for new building investment. The final result has delivered a significant cultural change on a campus that has previously focussed almost exclusively on sporting achievements. It is an iconic and memorable interior that creates a new language in theatre design. Calamvale Hotel: Brand and Slater Architects This is a stylish suburban hotel interior that is cohesive and well considered. The treatment of the western wall is innovative with the roof folding down to protect the users from the afternoon sun and busy road. The open northern façade facilitates a seamless shift between inside and outside which is further enhanced by the use of a natural material palette and native planting. The inclusion of the illuminated laser-cut wall adds a further layer of complexity to this well resolved space. G.H.M. 21 2011 STATE ARCHITECTURE AWARDS STATE JURY CITATIONS 2011 Awards Jury Director: Malcolm Middleton OAM FRAIA Public Architecture Category Fr Rosenskjar Resource Centre: Macksey Rush Architects A skilfully crafted and sophisticated building with superior material selections to the public faces provides a new address to the site and is much appreciated by the School Community. The integration of learning, administration & gathering facilities has provided much needed & improved circulation, legibility and focus. A commendable outcome on all levels. Kingaroy Crematorium: JMA Architects Qld The architecture of death, farewell and contemplation is not often encountered in a new built form. The Kingaroy Crematorium builds on the mature landscape in which it sits and is deliberately subservient to the cypress pines and eucalypts that establish a place of substance. The central space which caters for a wide range of service forms and size has a richness of material and a simplicity of detail that create a comfortable setting for the contemplative and socially important role that is conducted here. The project offers a feeling of support and engagement for a use that most members of the local community are likely to experience at some time. Toowoomba Hospital Birthing Suite: Project Services A politically sensitive and innovative project the Toowoomba Birthing Suite has used design interaction as the vehicle to deliver a paradigm shift for birthing practice. The end product is a domestically themed cocoon that reinvents conventional norms of medical practice and workplace regulation compliance. The final product is apparently simple in its execution but creates a new and radical setting that may be measured by excellent public health outcomes. The

22 facility is embraced enthusiastically by users who need to enter a ballot to have an opportunity to use the two suites. Indooroopilly Uniting Church: Riddel Architecture Located on a busy intersection the brief to extend the existing worship space is sensitive, welcoming, strikingly composed, and elevates the presence of the heritage-listed church. The spaces created are tranquil and uplifting. The clever use of materials and detailing enhances the church s presence. The All Saints Primary School Multi Purpose Hall, Boonah: BA Architects in association with Yem Architects A BER project in the catholic system, this flexible facility shows the benefits of the close working relationship of School principal with the design team. Context has been engaged with carefully and thoughtfully to deliver a building with quite different external presentations for each side of the building. Flexible openings, maximised natural light and a domestic scale street elevation combine to create a seamlessly integrated and welcoming new facility in the rural town setting. The decision to encase the steel portal in concrete gives a sense of scale and presence to the building whilst allowing for large openings to fit into the rhythm of the facade. Our Lady of the Southern Cross College Library & Hall: Fulton Trotter Architects A clash of cultures was the basis of the brief for this unification project that delivers a new front door for a school that has emerged from parallel campuses. An energetic use of colour and references to the steel farm building construction common in this rural community has informed the architectural approach and allowed an opportunity to build in the school logo to the steel flanges of the columns.

23 The stepped roof form makes a successful transition from the refurbished multi use hall to the library space and entry portico. The measure of success is evident in the successful use of the space by the two formerly divergent streams. Australian Tropical Science Innovation Precinct: Architecture Conrad Gargett This major project develops an important site of the JCU campus by bringing together two diverse cultural entities into a single operational structure. Enhanced site utilisation is delivered through additional height than normally accepted on campus and the functional sharing of common spaces. Flexible floor layouts are provided with good light and outlook to deliver work environments that are comfortable and non hierarchical. A strongly expressed external colour scheme challenges the more sedate setting of the central campus expression. The University of Queensland School of Veterinary Science: Architectus with S2F The new UQ vet School is a large scale multi building facility that has delivered an important re-energising of the well established but underutilised Gatton campus. A carefully considered range of buildings from formal research laboratories with statuesque built form, integrated animal hospital and teaching spaces through to humble kennels and rescued dilapidated sheds combine to deliver a world standard teaching complex. The project approach acknowledges the architectural history that surrounds it and builds further the sense of purpose that enables these teaching spaces to engage with the outside world.

24 University of Queensland Health Sciences: Phillips Smith Conwell Architects Spatially well articulated, with proportional balance. Building is functionspecific, yet inviting, with human scale. The spaces embrace the program of learning, working and public museum activities. Climate control is knowledgeably resolved by use of sunscreen elements. These, in turn, create new architectural distinctiveness for an essentially recycled building frame. Queensland Emergency Operations Centre: Architectus This major communications and disaster management building is elegant in its integration of a highly technical brief and core sustainability objectives. The clean lines of the form and raw materials are softened with screening and battening while the articulated landscape courtyard creates shaded and green areas for the essential relief to its buildings and the challenging and emotionally demanding work of its occupants. Cobb and Co Museum: Project Services The Cobb and Co Museum is the culmination of over 20 years of partnership by the facility director and designer. The whimsical and ever changing nature of the collection and presentation options is reflected in the carefully established relaxed but engaging spaces and places within this active complex. Community outreach and engagement are embedded into the built form as is the careful blend of historic reference and context acknowledgment that is developed for the site which includes the neighbouring TAFE complex. Although the site has had a long period of development the final result presents a considered and convincing place.

25 Cairns Cruise Terminal: Arkhefield and Total Project Group Architects in Association An important addition to the urban, cultural and commercial mix of the Cairns CBD the heritage listed waterfront shed has been recovered and repositioned as a city asset of substance. A rigorous process of built form interpretation combined with a flexible installation of the functional requirements of an international port of entry delivers a flexible facility with potential for significant commercial and cultural contribution to the city from its waterfront site. The structural challenges of the brief are comprehensively dealt with in a manner that enhances the buildings integrity and usefulness. An additional overlay of integrated art and urban structuring completes this comprehensive renewal precinct. The Augustine s Centre: Macksey Rush Architects This cost effective multi-functional master-planned Centre has pleased the client beyond expectations by combining educational and public usage. Its presence exudes an uplifting, yet subtle dominance of the campus through concave roof and supporting structures. Internally it surprises; a softness is created by natural lighting, acoustics and materials. St Andrew s Catholic College Chapel: Fisher Buttrose Architects The chapel is the completion of the central quadrangle- many years in the making on of this carefully crafted campus. Sited over a former creek and indigenous pathway this bold and simple building brings together the uncluttered concepts of the campus around it and offers a welcoming and open space with flexibility to accommodate both intimate and large scale gatherings. The external expression is strongly crafted in formal expression yet retains a sense of invitation through material richness and spatial completion along the central axis. Interior detailing and material choice offers an on site experience of richness and elegance to all users of the campus.

26 Montessori International College Library: FutureSense This adventurous project uses building siting and forms that result in minimum disturbance to a heavily treed site already constrained by the existing buildings of an operating school campus. The buildings incorporate a purpose designed building system based upon a known need for buildings to be relocatable. Building orientation, form and roof design optimizes available solar penetration and promotes passive ventilation. The end product is a strongly expressed solution that has direct linkages to the ethos of the Montessori approach and creates a heightened awareness of place, function and materiality. When relocated the buildings will be capable of adaptation for new site conditions and will allow for formal responses to feedback from the post occupancy evaluation. Parkhurst State School: Arkhefield This surprising project delivers a dramatic new front door to an existing low key primary school by redefining the image and ethos of the school through a bold but simple use of form and colour. The covered veranda reinterprets the climatically successful forms of the tropical north and carries this concept through to the enhanced internal spaces of the auditorium and resource centre. Material selections are confident and simple and are enhanced by opposing skillion roof forms that come together to reinforce the entry points of the project. The project successfully demonstrates the role of a confident design, engaged contractor and enthusiastic client to extract the most from the problematic BERS delivery system. Heron Island Research Centre: dm2architecture This remote location project is a rebuild and expansion of facilities completed only 4 years earlier and destroyed by fire. The revisiting of the site and facilities enabled a post occupancy evaluation to be put into practice resulting

27 in enhanced amenity and a markedly different approach to the architectural form. The revised cluster of buildings uses the original footings to create a lightweight podium that links the cluster of labs. The project explores a new expression of lightweight materiality through the extensive use of incombustible polycarbonate to walls and covered walkways. This selection significantly reduces the energy load whilst lifting the internal light levels to the working areas. The final grouping of residential buildings utilises strong simple forms to create visual interest and variety. F.D.G. 28 2011 STATE ARCHITECTURE AWARDS STATE JURY CITATIONS 2011 Awards Jury Director: Malcolm Middleton OAM FRAIA Residential Architecture Houses Category miller residence: bud brannigan architects The building plan and form is cleverly zoned and climatically well reasoned. Household spaces have comfortable connections to exterior views and landscaping. Particular attention is given to the zones, aspect, privacy and optimization of views and the end result is a sophisticated series of spaces. The house feels light and well connected throughout and the employment and expression of structure assist with defining space and use. The selection and application of materials is well considered and understated, whilst offering an overlay of tactility and solid grounding. Raven Street House: James Russell Architect Architectural Interventions are selectively introduced into an existing cottage in the form of a light well and volumetric atrium revealing new connections. The courtyard extension is defined by an assemblage of regionally appropriate habitable spaces that reference the tradition of post and beam construction. Marcus Beach House: Robinson Architects The future home for aging clients was the brief for this beach side residence. Single level access to all main living spaces with guest accommodation located on a lower level. The beach location is celebrated with multiple decks with flexible large scale openings to capture or control the breezes. Cantilevering upper floor elements combined with a bridge form breezeway threshold let the home float above the dunal vegetation and maximise the magnificent coastal views.

29 Regatta Parade Residence: Inarc Design An original 1970 s Mediterranean style residence on one of the Gold Coasts best streets has been skilfully repositioned to deliver the potential of the outlook into the solid fabric of the original house but with significantly heightened internal amenity. The architects have accepted & extended the clients brief by providing a living space capturing the riverfront beach & park and bringing it into the living space. Detailing is meticulous with a final built form expressing a subtle but significant repositioning of the house form. The investment is made in the places that benefit all users as well as enhancing the street presentation. Solis: Renato D Ettorre Architects This project is a continuation of the new levels of design engagement occurring on Hamilton Island. The house is a rare combination of a challenging tropical environment, panoramic steep site with uninterrupted views, an appropriate budget and a desire to create an oasis for resort style living and emotional recharge for an international business owner. The confident and thoughtful result is a modernist highly crafted living environment with inbuilt climatic flexibility and a slowly unfolding richness of space, place, material and detail. It has begun to weather and integrate fully into the landscape and will develop a unique patina over time. DHAN plus: Donovan Hill The life and community of Point Lookout inspires the thoughtful consideration to the scale and context of this project. A collection of territories created through a dynamic balance between the pre-fabricated and site built elements provide flexible occupation. Detailing of humble materials demonstrates a true collaboration between the architect and builder - a delightful outcome.

30 SM Residence, Calypso Bay: Reddog Architects Pty Ltd This house is a stylish solution to the provision of a contemporary residence on a conventional canal front block. The architects have extensively used timber together with a raised platform & a refined uncompromising design form to create an interesting single level building around a central courtyard. The end result is a controlled opening to the waterfront with the internal spaces of the house clearly separated by the open court. This approach contrasts with the traditional canal interface of open decks and delivers a house with layers of privacy and outlook. Red Hill House and Home Office: Bligh Graham Architects A sympathetic and cohesive, yet bold intervention in a restrictive environment, this building addresses the streetscape whilst at the same time pays homage to the fabric of the existing old corner dwelling. The cleaver weaving of home and home office adds to the overall intrigue. Peregian Beach House: MODE DESIGN Corp. Pty Ltd The project design is deliberately stratified with teenage areas on the lower floor employing materials and treatments evoking simplicity as part of an overall slightly crude, beach house aesthetic in external presentation. The upper floor is a more highly finished parents area with larger volumes and expansive deck with good connectivity between internal and external spaces. Internal spaces are enhanced through the use of translucent sheeting and glazing affording light penetration and assisting passive cooling. The building has strong structural expression with exposed elements assisting to overcome a slightly exaggerated, lofty, entry space. Canopy House: PHORM Architecture + Design Hovering lightly above two pavilions, the floating canopy protecting the outdoor room creates the memorable space of this delightful house nestled amongst the trees. The internal spaces are almost subservient to this main

31 living arena, with seamless transitions to both the kitchen and dining spaces, the entry landscape to the east and the tall open bushland to the west. The decision to utilise only external vertical circulation enhances the connection with the landscape and the autonomous sleeping places within a series of functional rooms, which are enclosed with robust materials, reminiscent of the classic beach shack. This project is a thoughtful investigation of a flexible living typology, which functions extremely well on all levels of programme, site sensitivity and climatic response Rossignol Warehouse: Liquid Blu This is an intricately planned project with the perimeter layer forming courtyard spaces as well as a bund, to solve potential flooding. There is a clever use of space to make self contained living units. Obviously quite a complex job with the attention required for flood proofing. The design shows imagination and ingenuity. Cabarita Beach House: Owen and Vokes This house is a special creation on an ordinary site where the architects have taken the clients brief and provided an exciting low cost practical solution of refined simplicity and elegance. The architects have maximized the use of a standard suburban canal front site & provided the clients with a solution outside the square. The attention to detail, the desire to consider the use of individual spaces & not compromise on the design intent throughout construction has resulted in a very special design. The simple palate and materials choice have provided an uncluttered sophistication to the design solution. Tranquillity Base: ARM This superbly sited house is a comfortable amalgam of contemporary Queenslander and innovative site responsive forms that respond to the dominant rock formations of the setting.

32 A simple palette of materials both indoor and outdoor are heightened by the provision of a generous central gathering volume flanked by both the rocks of the site and rock like pods of the sleeping quarters that adjoin the house. Panoramic views surround the focal areas of the house with flexibility to adjust to weather conditions from all angles. The house suffered minor damage from Cyclone Yasi. The house is designed for holiday living for both owner and tenants and provides a simple and comfortable Magnetic Island experience whilst pushing the aesthetic response to place to a new level of exploration. Bulimba Hill House: Owen and Vokes This is a family home that is simple in plan and form, yet layered with textures and uncomplicated details that effortlessly emphasise connections. The absence of enclosure upon entry amplifies the experience of open over built space, the sequencing of rooms on the edge maintains the experience of house as backdrop to courtyard. A simple plan, with outdoor spaces to the north and south provide well lit and breezy spaces. A good example of a sub-tropical terrace house. Park View, Wheller Gardens: Fulton Trotter Architects This facility re-defines institutional style aged care through sensitive and well considered design. Based around landscaped courtyards the articulated corridors and rooms capture views, breezes and light, creating a feeling of warmth for its 145 residents. Thoughtful details create a sense of home while welcoming in the broader community. Scott Street Apartments: Jackson Teece Architecture A beautifully crafted response to a luxury apartment development on a prominent inner city site. This strong visual statement responds appropriately to the urban context and issues of western aspect, traffic noise and adjacent heritage structures which have been carefully considered. Subtle and elegant detailing and construction quality of the highest order complete the picture. Castle Street: Najman Architects A fresh and unique approach to a small scale suburban infill development. By the clever exploitation of external space, natural light and ventilation, the architects have created a delightful pair of houses responding to site context

34 and environment. Experimentation and risk taking is not often seen in commercial developments and they are to be congratulated on their initiative. Cypress at Byron: Haysom Architects This multi residence development is a sensitive creation of a number of individual high quality residences within a group title structure on an ecologically restricted footprint. The architects & interior designers have used a refined & sophisticated selection of contemporary fixtures, finishes & materials to define spaces that stamp quality on the resultant spaces. Attention to detail & scale, a desire for understated elegance & a willingness to explore the levels has achieved a notable solution within a special environment. Individuality is delivered for each site but in the context of a unified cluster of buildings that form their own landscape form that compliments the greater landscape setting. Sphere Residential Community: BDA Architecture The Sphere project demonstrates the attributes of higher density, low to medium rise master planned development with considered community form and landscape amenity. The progressive build out of the project experiments with more sustainable project forms with the last stage introducing a full trafficable green roof that has produced measurable reductions in energy. The community growing on the site is responding positively to the calibre of the streets and laneways established in the overall master plan and which will connect to the large employment nodes of the University and Hospital nearby. The body corporate structure is embracing a mix of student and permanent residents in a positive manner. Maleny Grove Live Life Village: Riddel Architecture Overall site planning, orientation and built form is responsive to the rural town setting and the target market of retirees from larger properties by conveying spaciousness as well as a residential scale.
