1 COURSE 350R / 386 M : THEORY AND PRACTICE OF URBAN DESIGN THE CITY AS FORM AND IDEA IN EUROPE AND THE US INSTRUCTOR : BARBARA HOIDN OFFICE : BATTLE 117 T OFFICE HOURS : TTH 3-5 PM Over the centuries a variety of important and influential cities emerged, of which a few survived maintaining their original position although constantly transforming themselves. These cities became universal referrers and models of human civilisation with regard to historical, sociological, cultural and artistic accomplishments. These cities are images of the world, of its political and economic modes, of global hegemonies and defeats. The cities we live in today are not the result of a continuous and homogenious history but are characterized by abrupt interferences, eventual transformations and planned interventions. Ideally, behind each of these interventions one may discover an idea, or a theoretical construct - at least a well- intentioned reason- which is made visible by the form of the city. It is not by accident that the relevance of those cities we refer to in architecture and urban design theory is related to what these cities represent(ed) in the global economic development. Therefore, the focus of interest moved away from some cities which used to have world significance such as Athens, Venice, Istanbul, Kairo, Cordoba or Damascus to which we refer to today only for reasons of architectural archaeology or from the point of view of a connaisseur although they are still inhabited and may hold important messages. Some of the above mentioned cities defended their position over the years, others have only recently entered the circle of world cities when economy supported it, such as Berlin or New York, introducing new typologies and life styles. PROGRAM : The history of cities- unlike architecure- is not scientifically documented or entirely researched with a holistic interest for the topic. That is part of the history of the young discipline Urban Design itself. In the seminar we will seek to increase an interdicsiplinary insight and curiosity for former and current urban design strategies rather then learning mere formal patterns applicable in urban design practice. The seminar will examine significant and methodic developments in urban form beginning with the earliest documented metropolitan capitals ending with the most recent and prognosted trends. Astonishingly enough, in the light of a history of almost years of human dwelling mankind has produced only a few cities or settlement patterns around the world we use as valid reference.

2 COURSE ORGANISATION AND REQUIREMENTS: Cities and related Urban Theory will be discussed in a chronological sequence as well as thematically grouped to understand the related cultural context. The instructor will begin the first 2 weeks of classes with a series of lectures introducing the beginnings of urban settlements through the middle ages. The course will consist of weekly lectures, complemented with class discussions related to the material covered in the lectures and in the required readings. Students will give two presentations in the class during the semester of relevant historic moments in urban design history, eminent personalities who contributed to Urban Design and case study cities which will result in individual research papers due at the end of the semester. Selected readings will supplement the seminar. CLASS MEETINGS: Tue and Thu 9:30-11:30 am Battle 101 EDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVES: A chronological approach to the history and theory of city form helps to reveal certain permanent phenomena inherent to the development of cities and - over the course of time- redundant patterns of and reasons for change. Late work will be reviewed at the discretion of the instructor. The student s success at developing ideas and concepts, depth of reading, depth of presentation, participation in class discussion and a demonstration of a reiterative comprehensive working process are the major components of the student s evaluation. Four unexcused absences can constitute grounds for Removal from the course. An incomplete (I) is assigned as a temporary deferment of a final grade, and is assigned at the discretion of the instructor because of legitimately unavoidable and extenuating circumstances. Attendance is mandatory and, please, be on time. Classes will start promptly at 9:30AM. If you do miss class, it is your responsibility to gather the missed data and assignments from fellow students, and make up the work required by the next class. By UT Austin policy, you must notify me if your pending absence at least fourteen days prior to the date of observance of a religious holy day. If you must miss a class, an examination, a work assignment, or a project in order to observe a religious holy day, you will be given an opportunity to complete the missed work within a reasonable time after the absence.
