18 th. Century Events The Historian Fischer von Erlach Piranesi, Roman architect, archaeologist, printer and writer, and salesman of antiques and marbles. The Rigoristi: Carlo Lodoli, Franciscan, Marc-Antoine Laugier, S. J. The Revivalists: Roman architecture: Adam Brothers. Greek architecture: (Piranesi?), Julien-David Le Roy, James Stuart and Nicholas Revett.
Johann Bernhard Fischer von Erlach, ( ) Fischer von Erlach was Austrian, and a student for years in Rome. Called back, he wrote a History of World Architecture, the first one. He designed the Ch. of the Karlskirche, right, Vienna, and his publication, with German and French titles, found authority, as it covered Mesopotamia and China, visited by the Christian missionaries such as the Jesuits. Chinese Garden with Bridge Babylon, above
Giovanni Battista Piranesi ( ) Piranesi was famous among the rich visitors to Rome for his views of the city and his attitudes to building. He proclaimed the superiority of Roman construction and attacked ideas of Greek priority, Seeking the Magnificence of Roman scale and order, above all.
He was famous for his views of the Carceri or Prisons, so was he criticising the papal power In Rome, and appealing to the liberal ideas of his rich clients? He designed only one building, the Priory of the Order of Malta, below, and left, which is an early example of Neoclassical architecture, that was a result of the Revivalists attempts to restore the ancient architecture of antiquity, even Egyptian, of which Piranesi was proud to dabble in. Note pilasters on exterior of Priory.
Piranesi celebrated Etruscan (Tuscan) architecture as well as Roman, and com- Pared them with the Greek, as in le Roy s Greek Ruins of Piranesi praised Etruscan in 3 langs. and dedicated his work to Mr Robert Adam, Archt.
Carlo Lodoli ( ) Lodoli was a priest, teacher and interested in Architecture. He seems to have been an early Functionalist with the notion of truth to materials, and He did not build much. He refused to publish, so others did so, such as Algarotti and Memmo. He follows Perrault and Cordemoy, and was followed by the Abbé Laugier. He insisted that a lintel should be composed of voussoirs, to represent the structural truth of construction.
Marc-Antoine Laugier, S.J., ( ) Laugier wrote the Essai to correct the faults of Architecture, e.g. in the Orders, such as engaged columns, pilasters, columns on pedestals, incorrect entasis, as well as incorrect proportion as did Perrault before him. Was Gothic the image that Laugier was attempting to model in his theories about architecture? It is most probable that this is true, but he did not reveal it openly.
Interior, Ch. of St. Genevieve, Paris, later the Pantheon, by Soufflot, with free columns supporting both dome-corner & balcony.
Robert Adam (+ Bros.) & Roman The visit to Split on coast of Dalmatia, city originally built as palace by Emp. Diocletian, was published and gave the two Scots architects a design language for their later work in the U. K.
Julien-David le Roy & Greek Valhalla, Bavaria, to the memory of German artists First attempt to find out what Greek architecture was really like, surveying the blgs. of Athens, and publishing drgs. by the best engravers. This led to the birth of the neoclassical style in Europe and the USA.
Tower of the Winds, left, and Palmette order: Greek accuracy in form and detail for the first time.
Stuart & Revett in Athens They found in the Erectheum the stone ladies supporting the porch, and realised that the model of the human body in Vitruvius was a reality.
? The Work of Schinkel in Berlin? Neoclassical architecture became popular as there were real models to follow, and sculpture could be regularised and repetitive. So it became a favourite method of teaching architecture in the 19 th. Century in the beaux.arts academies. See Robert Adam,Neo-classicist Archt., in England, today.
