1 2017 Salone del Mobile.Milano Shanghai Events: A programme jam packed with design-related events. A wide range of opportunities for reflection and debate on hot topics in design and interior architecture at the SEC Shanghai Exhibition Center from 23 rd to 25 th November. The programme for the second edition of the Salone del Mobile.Milano Shanghai is crammed with events that will further bolster its reputation in China as an avant-garde event capable of catalysing the attention of leading international designers. Organised directly by the Salone, the Master Classes feature three internationallyrenowned Italian architects Mario Bellini, Piero Lissoni and Giancarlo Tintori in conversation with three talented Chinese designers Di Zhang, Kuang Ming (Ray) Chou and Jamy Yang giving the audience an opportunity to explore different yet synergistic views and thoughts on the development of the design industry in China and in the world at large. In Mario Bellini. Italian Beauty, the architect described variously as methodical yet experimental, traditionalist yet trend-setting, organised yet innovative and, above all, professional, takes us on an extraordinary journey through a career geared to the discovery of Italian Beauty. He sees this as the creativity of contradiction, the clash between the usual and the unusual, in which Italian classical culture and the poetics of rigor are always to be found. He will be in conversation with Di Zhang, founder of the WAA studio, whose signature style is a perfect balance of the human component and nature, emotion and culture. Scala 1:1 is not just the name of the story of one of the most internationally renowned architects, designers and graphic designers, Piero Lissoni, it is also the title of a recent one-man exhibition which reveals the enormous extent to which his designs are informed by his humanist outlook. Apparent simplicity, complexity of design and perfect imperfection are at the heart of his work. He will be in conversation with Kuang Ming (Ray) Chou, designer and founder of the Vermilion Zhou Design Group, which, influenced by European tradition, combines Western logical thinking with Eastern style and culture to create up-to-the-minute, international design. One of the lessons Giancarlo Tintori has never forgotten relates to creating beauty and harmony. His Master Class, 20 Short Love Stories, is intended as a practical demonstration of how to apply this lesson to design. Making design means thinking and recognising what is beautiful because it is simple and, especially, what is good, meaning not superfluous, sustainable, harmonious and tangible. He will be in conversation with Jamy Yang, founder of Yang Design, described as one of China s most influential designers and planners, in whose work nature and technology integrate seamlessly. He believes that design is where positive sensory, tactile and perceptual experiences can be retrieved.

2 The event s cultural programme also includes the Design Talks organised by the Salone del Mobile.Milano Shanghai media partners. Domus and the Global Challenge organised by domus international will explore the role of architecture and design in the process of global transformation currently being experienced by international communities. China s young architects are an emerging generation and a pivotal force for the near future. Their aspirations, challenges, projects and successes will be shared against a radically changing background. Italian Design Icon Makers. Comparing stories and visions organised by INTERNI China focuses on the real stars of design, i.e. the people who work behind the scenes but who play a key part in the international affirmation of Made in Italy furnishing and in the evolution of taste and design. Our international guests will take stock of the roles and skills crucial to the world of contemporary design and examine the importance of the part business people and other key Italian design professionals play in turning a design into an innovative icon, through skills, knowledge and investment management. IDEAT Future Forum organised by IDEAT reflects on the fundamental issues of the near future: smart technology, sustainability, and the relationship between art and industry, with particular reference to the situation in Italy. It will provide an opportunity for discussion and reflection on innovation, security, interconnection and futuristic design and explore potential solutions for improving urban quality of life, with citizens needs firmly at the forefront. The cultural events are rounded off by the photographic exhibition Italian Interiors from 1925 to the Present Day, curated by architect Alessandro Colombo, Studio Cerri Associati and triggered by Rooms. Novel Living Concepts, curated by Beppe Finessi for the 2016 Salone del Mobile.Milano. The exhibition provides a special opportunity to illustrate the work of leading 20 th century Italian designers as they got to grips with interior architecture. Lastly, the Elle Deco International Design Award, which recognises and celebrates excellence in design, will assign prizes to the outstanding designers in 13 different categories: designer of the year, young design talent, furniture, seating, fabrics, wall coverings, tableware, lighting, bedding, flooring, kitchens, bathrooms, outdoor. 4 Mario Bellini Mario Bellini is an architect and designer internationally renowned. He received the Golden Compass Award eight times and 25 of his works are in the permanent design collection of the New York MoMA, which dedicated to him a personal retrospective in He was editor of Domus magazine ( ). He has designed countless art, design and architecture exhibitions over the years, both in Italy and abroad. The last one is the first ever Giotto complete exhibition in the Royal Palace of Milan. In 2015 he received the Golden Medal for his professional career, an honor bestowed by Triennale di Milano, that from January to March 2017 has devoted to him a personal exhibition. Since 1991 he is Royal Honorary Designer of RDI. Since the 1980 s, dedicating himself almost entirely to architecture, the manifold kinds of buildings he has designed include the Portello Trade Fair district in Milan, the Villa Erba Exhibition and Convention Centre in Cernobbio (Como), the Tokyo Design Centre in Japan, the Natuzzi America Headquarters in the United States, the National Gallery of Victoria in Melbourne, the Deutsche Bank Headquartes in Frankfurt, the City History Museum of Bologna, the Department of Islamic Art at the Louvre in Paris, and the new Milan Convention Centre, the largest in Europe. Projects currently underway are the refurbishing of the International Air terminal of Roma-Fiumicino ( ), the Erzelli Science and Technology Park in Genoa ( ), the Generali Academy in Trieste ( ), and the new museum Antiquarium at the Roman Forum in Rome ( ). He has various projects at the design stage, among which, the New Eco-City of Zhenjiang in China ( ) and a large Residential, Cultural and Sports Complex in Gulf Area ( ).

Di Zhang Di Zhang, graduated with a postgraduate diploma in Architecture from the Bartlett School of Architecture (University College London) in 2007 after taking a BA in Architecture from the

5 Di Zhang Di Zhang, graduated with a postgraduate diploma in Architecture from the Bartlett School of Architecture (University College London) in 2007 after taking a BA in Architecture from the University of Sheffield in She is a registered architect as well as a Chartered Architect of the Royal Institute British Architect (RIBA). Her previous work experience includes Foster+Partners (London) and RHWL Architects (London). In 2010, she founded WAA (we architect anonymous) in Beijing, as its principal partner. Di Zhang was shortlisted for the AR Women in Architecture Awards 2016 Moira Gemmill Prize for Emerging Architecture. WAA tells stories, narratives, which originate from our experiences within the world; the spatial implications of these narratives help us infuse a sense of humanity and place into our work. Our ambition is to reawaken these lost languages of humanity - the fundamental core values of identity relating to emotion, the natural world, geographical and cultural references, all provide us with an abundance of enlightenment to help reshape the norms of our complex world into an alternative, sitespecific approach to engaging, looser architecture.

6 Piero Lissoni Piero Lissoni is an Architect, Designer and Art Director. In 1986, he and Nicoletta Canesi founded the interdisciplinary studio Lissoni Associati in Milan, focusing on architecture as well as interior and product design. This was followed in 1996 by the studio for visual communication Graph.x, which specialises in brand identity, including catalogues, advertising campaigns, web design and packaging, responsible since 2007 for the visual coordination of the Venice International Film Festival. Lissoni Architettura was established in 2013, to take charge of the numerous international architectural clients and, two years later, by Lissoni Inc., in New York, where interior design for the American, Canadian and the Central and South American-market are created. Lissoni Inc. works closely with licensed architects of record on all the USA projects. Lissoni and his multinational team thus comprehensively cover the areas of architecture, interior and product design, graphics, art direction and corporate identity. Projects extend globally to include private villas, residential buildings, offices, factories, theatres, restaurants and hotels, yachts. Piero Lissoni is art director for Alpi, Boffi, De Padova, Lema, Living Divani, Lualdi and Porro; he designs products and exhibition stands for many of the above brands and other prestigious companies including Alessi, B&B Italia, Cappellini, Cassina, Cotto, Fantini, Flos, Glas Italia, Golran, Illy, Kartell, Kerakoll, Knoll International, Salvatori, Sanlorenzo, Tecno, Viccarbe. His architecture and design work is recognized worldwide and has earned him a series of international awards, including Good Design Award, Red Dot Award, Compasso D Oro ADI, EDIDA; he is guest lecturer and member of the Advisory Board at the Milan Politecnico, inducted into the New York I.D. Hall of Fame. Lissoni has recently inaugurated the Roomers Hotel Baden-Baden with its 130 rooms and spa in Germany, he has completed the renovation of the historic 384-room David Citadel Hotel in the Old City of Jerusalem and the new flagship stores for De Padova and Fantini in Milan, for Lema in London, the Alpi showroom in Milan, the Kerakoll Design Lab in Sassuolo. These projects follow a series of international showrooms for Boffi, Cassina, Living Divani, Porro and Tecno. Current commissions comprise The Oberoi Resort Al Zorah in Ajman, (UAE) a luxury property with waterfront living that includes a hotel, villas, restaurants, a spa,

7 swimming pools and a private beach; the façade concept and interior design of The Middle House two towers for Swire Hotel in the Jing an district, Shanghai, to include public spaces, guestrooms and serviced apartments; the development of the business hotel brand Shilla Stay Hotels for the Samsung Group (11 hotels in Seoul and across South Korea);the interior design of a five star hotel destination in Croatia, the Hotel Park facing the Marina and the old town of Rovigno; the Lionheart Capital development The Ritz-Carlton-Residences Miami Beach is a conversion of a former hospital into exclusive waterfront condos and villas; Casa Fantini, an elegant 11 rooms boutique hotel with spa on the shores of Orta Lake; the interior design of a townhouse in New York; private villas in Amsterdam, Geneva and Tel Aviv. Piero Lissoni s expertise and his passion for food and kitchen design led the firm to design the restaurant D O for the celebrated chef Davide Oldani (2016) and the restaurant Filippo la Mantia Oste e Cuoco (2015) for the Sicilian chef. Lissoni s interest in the art world brought him to design the photographer Giovanni Gastel retrospective, curated by Germano Celant, at Palazzo della Ragione (2016), the room for temporary shows at Bagatti Valsecchi Museum, inaugurated with the exhibit The triptych of Antonello da Messina (2015) and the exhibition on the Renaissance painter Bernardino Luini e i suoi Figli at Palazzo Reale (2014) in Milan. Lissoni designed the Grand Hotel Billia in Saint Vincent (Aosta Valley) with its adjoining Parc Hotel Billia, L Eve spa, Casino de la Vallée and Congress Centre ( ); the renovation of Mare Pineta ( ) beauty farm and hotel in Milano Marittima, the first Grand Hotel of the coast inaugurated in 1927; the Conservatorium Hotel, Amsterdam s former Conservatory of Music converted into a luxury hotel ( ); the Hotel Bellariva, an historic manor house on Garda Lake transformed into an elegant hotel (2010); the Mamilla Hotel in the Old City of Jerusalem (2009); the expansion of the historic Teatro Nazionale in Milan (2009); the eight-storey Benetton flagship store in Kadıköy, Istanbul (2009); the renovation and interior refitting of the Hotel Monaco & Grand Canal Hotel in Venice ( ). Other completed works include the 50m yacht Tribù (2007)in partnership with Mondo Marine shipyard and the interiors of the 36m sailing yacht Ghost(2005) in collaboration with Brenta Yacht Design Studio. Incursions into the fashion world comprehend collaborations with the Italian brands Benetton, Gallo, Santandrea and Serapian as well as NY designer Elie Tahari.

8 Kuang Ming (Ray) Chou Kuang Ming (Ray) Chou was influenced by and learned a great deal from European culture and travel while studying in Spain. His design is informed by a blend of Western logical thinking and the pursuit of the Eastern lifestyle, and reflects a fusion of Eastern and Western culture and his deep Chinese cultural roots. Kuang Ming (Ray) Chou s design philosophy is based on the idea that design thinking always starts with people, that designers have to get to grips with what it is the client really needs, and then provide the right professional service with a better life in mind. Vermilion Zhou Design Group was founded in 2002 in Shanghai, by Kuang Ming (Ray) Chou, and Vera Chu (Founder/Lighting Design Director); Garvin Hung (Partner/Design Director) subsequently came on board. Over the next ten years, they oversaw more than 600 interior design projects in China and overseas, gaining an extremely high reputation. Their projects include public areas, commercial spaces, hotels, clubhouses, offices and high-end residences.

9 Giancarlo Tintori Giancarlo Tintori (1961) studied architecture at the Polytechnic University of Milan. In 1987 he won a RAI [Radiotelevisione Italiana] competition to design scenery, working on television and film productions in Italy and abroad for over a decade. He set up the Giancarlo Tintori srl studio in 1991, based in Milan. He works in architectural and industrial design, specialising in retail design. He works with fashion and furnishing/design brands, conceiving and producing architectural concepts, store planning and light design. His consultancy work with various companies also includes art direction, product design, planning events and exhibition installations. His main clients include Gucci, Armani, Cassina, Paciotti, Nemo, Swarovski, D&G, Ferrè, Shiseido, Camper, Calvin Klein and the Italian Chamber of Fashion. He teaches at the Faculty of Architecture at the University of Ferrara and at the École Supérieure du Commerce in Troyes; he is a visiting professor at other international universities, especially in China, where his architecture-related subjects include architecture as a statement and brand communication vehicle.

Jamy Yang Jamy Yang has received master degree of industrial design from Germany with full scholarship of WK Foundation after 7-year study in Zhejiang University and China Academy of Art.

10 Jamy Yang Jamy Yang has received master degree of industrial design from Germany with full scholarship of WK Foundation after 7-year study in Zhejiang University and China Academy of Art. He went on to design products for Siemens at their headquarters in Munich. It is his fusion of craftsmanship and innovation that has made Yang one have achieved international recognition, winning nearly a hundred design awards including Red Dots, if, G-mark, IDEA and DFA Silver. He has been listed in Top Influential Chinese Designer by mainstream media in the past two years. On returning to China in 2005, he founded YANG DESIGN which has been developed to leading design consultancy with forward-thinking based on local insights in China. In the year 2013, Yang invested and founded YANG DESIGN MUSEUM which is China s first private industrial design museum. Yang has been collecting thousands of inspirational items and good products and he houses them in his museum in a converted industrial building in Shanghai, cluing a long history of industrial design. In 2015, Yang started to establish a new lifestyle brand naming YANG HOUSE. With a good combination of German logical aesthetic and Chinese humanistic thinking, Jamy has formed his own design philosophy and become good partner with renowned global brands and non-profit organizations including Boeing, Audi, BMW, Poltrona Frau, Philips, Swatch, GAGGENAU as well as Green Peace, One Foundation etc. He has good pieces come out as diverse as glasses, suitcase, airplane cabin, home furniture and space design. A series of projects working with One Foundation shows his belief for taking social responsibilities as a role of designer.
