2 Editorial Committee Paola Pittaluga Silvia Serreli Project Assistants Monica Johansson Lisa Meloni Laura Lutzoni Aims and Scope Urban and Landscape Perspectives is a series which aims at nurturing theoretic re fl ection on the city and the territory and working out and applying methods and techniques for improving our physical and social landscapes. The main issue in the series is developed around the projectual dimension, with the objective of visualising both the city and the territory from a particular viewpoint, which singles out the territorial dimension as the city s space of communication and negotiation. The series will face emerging problems that characterise the dynamics of city development, like the new, fresh relations between urban societies and physical space, the right to the city, urban equity, the project for the physical city as a means to reveal civitas, signs of new social cohesiveness, the sense of contemporary public space and the sustainability of urban development. Concerned with advancing theories on the city, the series resolves to welcome articles that feature a pluralism of disciplinary contributions studying formal and informal practices on the project for the city and seeking conceptual and operative categories capable of understanding and facing the problems inherent in the profound transformations of contemporary urban landscapes.

7 Contributors Pia Bäcklund School of Management, University of Tampere, Tampere, Finland Pia Bäcklund (1966) has worked on practical and theoretical issues of local democracy and participation for more than a decade, earlier as a senior researcher at the city of Helsinki, and since 2010 at the University of Tampere, Finland. She received her Master s (1997) and Doctoral (2007) degrees in human geo graphy in the University of Helsinki. She is currently engaged in her Academy of Finland- fi nanced postdoctoral work concerning issues of participation and territoriality in local democracy in city regions. Alessandro Balducci Department of Architecture and Urban Studies (DAStU) Politecnico di Milano, Milan, Italy Alessandro Balducci (1954), is an architect and has a PhD in Planning, is Vice-rector of the Politecnico di Milano and full professor of Planning and Urban Policies. Former Head of the Department of Architecture and Planning ( ) and former director of the international PhD programme in Spatial planning and Urban Development ( ) at the Politecnico di Milano, he has been the President of AESOP, the Association of the European Schools of Planning ( ), and among the founding members of the European Urban Research Association (EURA) and is currently Chair of the Italian Society of Urbanists (SIU). Claudio Calvaresi Urban and Territorial Policy Unit, Istituto per la Ricerca Sociale, Milan, Italy Claudio Calvaresi (1964) holds a Degree in Urban Planning (1992) and a PhD in Urban Planning (1996). He is currently the director of the Urban Policies Research Unit at IRS and also a professor of Analysis of Urban and Territorial Policy at Faculty of Architecture, Politecnico di Milano. His main fi elds of interest are urban regeneration, strategic planning, community planning and evaluation of territorial policies. He has been in charge of relevant research project in the fi eld of local development processes and involved in research projects funded by the European Commission. vii

8 viii Contributors Linda Cossa Urban and Territorial Policy Unit, Istituto per la Ricerca Sociale, Milan, Italy Linda Cossa (1979) holds a degree in Urban Planning (2004) and is currently a PhD candidate in Territorial Design and Government at Faculty of Architecture, Politecnico di Milano. She has been a researcher of the Urban Policies Research Unit at IRS since 2005, and she is involved in urban public policy analysis and evaluation, urban planning and social housing programmes, with a particular attention towards regeneration of suburban areas. Daniela De Leo Department of Design, Architecture, Technology and Environment, Faculty of Architecture, La Sapienza University, Rome, Italy Daniela De Leo (1973) is a researcher and assistant professor of urban planning at the Sapienza University in Rome (Italy). She graduated in architecture and earned a PhD in urban planning at the Federico II University of Naples. She mainly works in the fi elds of planning theory and practices and local development planning in dif fi cult conditions. Among her recent works are the following: Insurgent public sphere in illegal settlements in Naples metro-region (in M. Cremaschi and F. Valeria Fedeli Department of Architecture and Urban Studies (DAStU), Faculty of Architecture and Society, Politecnico di Milano, Milan, Italy Valeria Fedeli (1972) is an architect (M.Sc. Architecture, 1997) and has a PhD in Planning and Public policies (Istituto Universitario di Architettura di Venezia, 2001). She is a researcher and assistant professor at Politecnico di Milano since She also holds an Advanced Master Degree in Planning at Politecnico di Milano (2002). She has been postdoc research fellow at Maison des Sciences de l Homme, Paris, in She teaches Bachelor courses in Urban Analysis, Social and urban analysis and Planning tools. Her research activities focus on governance, metropolitan and territorial planning and strategic planning. Peter Galison Department of the History of Science, Harvard University, Cambridge, MA, USA Peter Galison is a physicist and historian of science at Harvard University, where his work explores the material and theoretical interaction among scienti fi c cultures. His books include the following: How Experiments End, Image and Logic, Einstein s Clocks, Poincaré s Maps and, with Lorraine Daston, Objectivity. In 2012, his collaborative work with William Kentridge ( Refusal of Time ) was at Documenta. He has made two documentary fi lms: Ultimate Weapon: The H-bomb Dilemma and Secrecy (about national security secrecy and democracy), which premiered at the

9 Contributors ix Sundance Film Festival. At present, he is completing a book, Building Crashing Thinking (on technologies that re-form the self). Maarit Kahila-Tani Department of Real Estate, Planning and Geoinformatics/ YTK, Aalto University, Espoo, Finland Maarit Kahila-Tani (1978) is a PhD student at Aalto University, YTK Land Use Planning and Urban Studies Group (Finland). She graduated in planning geography in Helsinki (2005). She works in the fi elds of participative urban planning, geographic information and planning support systems. In her PhD, she studies how SoftGIS method bridges the gap between urban planners and residents. Jonna K. Kangasoja Department of Real Estate, Planning and Geoinformatics/ YTK, Aalto University, Espoo, Finland Jonna K. Kangasoja (1971) is a researcher and doctoral candidate (YTK Land Use Planning and Urban Studies) at Aalto University (Finland). Kangasoja graduated in 2000 (MA in education) from the University of Helsinki, Department of Education. Kangasoja s research has focused on multiparty collaboration, boundary crossing and mediation in planning practices. Currently she is a visiting researcher at the Program on Negotiation at Harvard Law School. Her publications include Kangasoja, J. and Schulman, H. Eds. Vesa Kanninen Department of Real Estate, Planning and Geoinformatics/YTK, Aalto University, Espoo, Finland Vesa Kanninen (1962) has worked at Aalto University, Finland, since receiving his Master s degree in planning geography (2002) in the University of Helsinki (Finland), concentrating on land use planning cooperation, land use and transportation planning integration as well as planning policy, governance and retail planning issues. He is currently engaged, e.g. in research concerning retail planning cooperation and city centre revitalization, and is working on his PhD on the applicability of the trading zone approach in aiding planning integration. Helena Leino School of Management, University of Tampere, Tampere, Finland Helena Leino is senior lecturer in environmental policy at the School of Management in University of Tampere (Finland). She received her PhD (2006) in environmental policy in Tampere. She teaches master level courses on environmental policy and urban planning. Her recent research has focused on practice-oriented policy analysis,

10 x Contributors public participation and land-use planning con fl icts as well as participatory knowledge production in urban planning. Among her recent works are as follows: Do Matters of Concern Matter? Bringing Issues back to Participation (in Planning Theory, 2012 together with M. Laura Lieto Department of Architecture, Federico II University, Naples, Italy Laura Lieto (1966) is an associate professor of urban planning at the Federico II University of Naples (Italy). She graduated in architecture in Naples (1990) and earned a PhD in urban planning at the Sapienza University in Rome (1997). She mainly works in the fi elds of planning theory and planning history, among her recent works are Power, Knowledge and Ethics in Extra-ordinary times. Learning from the Naples waste crisis (in F. Lo Piccolo and H. Thomas (eds), Ethics and Planning Research, Ashgate 2009) and Americans. Città e territorio ai tempi dell impero (Cronopio 2012). Raine Mäntysalo Department of Real Estate, Planning and Geoinformatics/YTK, Aalto University, Espoo, Finland Raine Mäntysalo (1963) received his Master s (1994) and Doctoral (2001) degrees in architecture (urban planning) in University of Oulu (Finland) where he became an adjunct professor in 2005, specialized in planning theory and communicative planning. Since 2008, he has been full professor in strategic urban planning at Aalto University, Helsinki, Finland. Related to his professorship, his theoretical interests concentrate on pragmatist and dialectical planning theory and developmental planning research. He has recently published on the relationship between planning theory and democracy theory and agonism and power analytics in planning processes.
