4 Message from the President of IABSE 3 My first visit to Japan took place in 1980 and, during the 6 weeks I spent there I was fortunate in being taken to Nara. The contrast with the bustle and energy of cities such as Tokyo, Osaka and Nagoya was stark. Here was a place of calm, an oasis of history and tranquility, very much in harmony with the surrounding nature. Having not been back since, I am eagerly anticipating next May s combination of our IABSE scientific debate and the Nara location. Prof. David. A. Nethercot It is fitting that the Japanese Group have selected President of IABSE Elegance as the theme for our 2015 Spring Conference since the word encapsulates my recollection of Nara. And elegance is, of course, so much more than just appearance. It is that sense of being in harmony with the surroundings, of meeting requirements in a fitting manner and of producing solutions that just feel right. IABSE has not held a major international event in Japan for almost 20 years. So, for many of our members, Nara represents the first opportunity to participate in an IABSE conference in that fascinating country. Not only can we be assured of the meticulous Japanese planning and preparation, we can also look forward to the distinctive Japanese style of hospitality and the opportunity to experience that nation s unique culture and history. This is an opportunity not to be missed. Nara promises to provide all those ingredients that make for a wonderful technical and cultural experience. I look forward to meeting up with many of our members and to welcoming many new friends to the IABSE community. 2

5 Message from the Organisers 4 Civil engineering structures are important elements of infrastructure system that support a functional city and society. They are expected to last for long time such as fifty years or more, serve the designed purposes and often become landmarks of the city and region. For these reasons, elegance becomes an important characteristic of civil engineering structures. Elegance in Structures does not associate merely with the physical forms of structures or aesthetics, but includes more aspects such as elegant structural solutions, elegant modeling, elegant analytical procedures and Prof. Yozo Fujino Chair, Organising Committee elegant construction process. During planning, design and construction, engineers and designers involved are expected to put their maximum efforts to realize the concept of elegant structure under various obstacles and constraints. We believe that one of the most important features of various things and systems nurtured in Japan including technologies are their delicate consideration and fine finishing. The theme of the conference Elegance in Structures, is based on this idea. As a part of IABSE, one of the most prestigious international societies of structural engineering with a history of over 80 years, the Japanese Group of IABSE is very excited to welcome you all in Nara at the 2015 IABSE Conference with the theme Elegance in Structures. Nara, an ancient capital of Japan, provides a fine example of an elegant city; it is a city where modern infrastructure and society live in harmony with the preserved ancient temples, shrines and other cultural heritages. We expect that many of you will come to Nara to meet new participants, colleagues and old friends from around the world. This will be an exciting event where scientists, designers, practicing engineers, contractors, asset owners and decision makers gather to discuss the concept and practice of Elegance in Structures and have fruitful discussions in an ancient Japanese architecture environment. 3

9 Papers and Presentations 3 Elegance in Structures One of the most important features of the various things and systems nurtured in Japan are, we believe, their delicate consideration and fine finishing. The theme of the conference Elegance in Structures, is based on this idea. Elegance in structures does not only deal with the physical forms of structures, but more widely include elegant structural solutions to earthquakes and typhoons, elegant modeling of structures and elegant analytical procedures. We hope to welcome many guests from around the world to Nara and have a fruitful discussion, surrounded by ancient Papers More than 380 abstracts have been submitted. Now the Scientific Committee is reviewing all papers. The papers are of a high quality. All accepted papers will be presented orally during the technical programme. Presentations Notification of acceptance of papers will be given. All papers accepted by the Scientific Committee and presented at the IABSE Conference will be published in the Conference Proceedings and on the Conference CD. 12 Conference Report The printed conference proceedings will contain two-page abstracts of all papers accepted by the Scientific Committee. The full version will be included on a CD-ROM enclosed with the proceedings, and will be available at the beginning of the conference. Note that authors must register to the conference in order to have their paper published in the Conference Report. Young Engineers Programme As a young engineers programme, a workshop Elegance in Structures will be held at the conference venue on May 12 afternoon. It is basically a design competition for a pedestrian bridge in Nara: the workshop includes lectures by prominent engineers, review of designs proposed by young engineers (35 years old or younger) and an award ceremony. All delegates born in 1980 or later and students will enjoy reduced registration fees. In addition a jury will award two young authors, born in or after 1980 who have personally presented their paper during the Conference, with the Young Engineers Contribution Award, consisting of a money prize. 17 Technical Visits TV (1) Exploring Construction and Modern Retrofit Techniques for Historic Wooden Structures Date and time: May 14, 2015, start at 14:10, finish at 18:00 Place: Kofukuji Temple Chu-Kondo, Tosho-Daiji Temple Kofukuji Temple Chu-Kondo Restoration of Original Building Based on Survey Kofukuji Temple has many historic wooden structures including three registered as national treasure. Currently, the restoration of the Chu-Kondo (the central golden hall) of the time of its foundation is underway since 1998, and the completion is aimed to be celebrated in The restoration plan is based on excavation and research of podium including reviews of literature and architectural drawings written after Nara Period (AD ). The construction of most parts of the framing has been completed so far. The tour guided by an expert takes you to the inner part of the main hall that is not accessible to public. 18 Technical Visits Tosho-Daiji Temple, Kondo Integration of Conservation and Seismic Retrofit Tosho-Daiji Temple, a UNESCO world heritage site, has many historic wooden structures, including Kondo (Golden or Main Hall). The Kondo recently underwent major renovation over the period of 12 years ( ). It was the first attempt since a century ago, and overall increase in load carrying capacity of the structure was achieved. Investigations into the existing performance were carried out using detailed surveys, analyses, and physical tests, and the renovation was accomplished to best maintain the original statue of this heritage. 19 Technical Visits TV (2) Exploring the Latest Construction Techniques at Takatsuki Junction and Akutagwa Bridge of West Nippon Expressway Company Limited Date and time: May 14, 2015 Start at 13:00, finish at 18:00 Place: Takatsuki Junction, Akutagawa Bridge West Nippon Expressway Company Limited connects major cities in the western Japan. Takatsuki Junction near Osaka connects Shin-Meishin highway and Meishin highway and adopts various structural styles and erection techniques in ramp bridge construction. The visitors will enjoy exploring the latest bridge construction techniques in Japan. Akutagawa Bridge is a PC box girder bridge with butterfly webs spanning a part of Shin-Meishin highway. A web structure with butterfly-shaped panel, first developed in Japan, is a technique unprecedented in the world. 21 Travel and Accomodation About the City of Nara Nara is situated in the centre of Japan, which is a vertically long archipelago. Nara was the capital of Japan in the 8th century AD and a cultural centre, being the endpoint of the Silk Road. Nara is a city with a population of 1.4 million with many important cultural properties including Todaiji-temple, Horyu-ji temple, Heijyokyu etc. More information can be found in the Nara City Sightseeing Information Centre. 24 Issuance of Receipts A receipt will be given at the registration desk with other symposium materials on-site. Cancellation Policy Notification of cancellation must be made in writing (by or fax) to the Conference Registration Office. Cancellations will be accepted until March 31, The Conference Registration Office will retain 10% of the prepaid registration fee as a processing fee. The refund will be 90% of the prepaid amount. After April 1, 2015 no refunds will be made. For bank transfer payment, a bank handling charge will be deducted from the amount of refund. All refunds will be made after the Conference.
