1 The Introduction Albans had 40 First World War memorials ranging from church, parish, school, and factory memorials to a community hall, a tree and also a unique set of street memorials. In support of our recent project researching the Home Front in Albans during the war, members of the Society collated the names of the fallen from 29 memorials across the city (one of which, the Adult memorial, no longer exists) and one roll of honour into the following data matrix. This is an important tool for our assessment of the topic of commemoration. We have based our research on the 630 or so men and they are all men whose names appear both on the City Memorial and in the Albans Roll of Honour published in the mid 1920s to provide further details about the fallen. Around 65 percent of these names appear on at least one other memorial and, with some recorded on as many as five, you may find useful clues about their education, occupation and religious beliefs. With this in mind, we have decided to make the matrix more widely available to help those of you researching the life of an individual or perhaps a group of men from a particular street or district in the city. We hope you will help us in return. Beyond the fallen, we are keen to locate materials that help us understand what life was like for those who stayed behind in Albans. If you have items such as letters, diaries and photos from this period, please do let us know. 1

However, as an aid to other researchers, we have included material from the Albans Roll of Honour to provide for the most part a brief history of each man s service and death. You will find this in the columns marked Forename,,, Address and Date and. We have sampled this data to check its accuracy and, while our results were good, we recommend that you conduct your own checks. Please also note that we have not edited the material so, for example, anachronistic place names remain as printed. We have however, placed the list in correct alphabetical order sorted by surname then forenames. We excluded from the matrix about 50 names that appear on the other memorials but not on the City memorial. Please also note that, as there is some art as well as science to reconciling names on the memorials with those on the City memorial and in the Roll, there may be a very few occasions where our best estimates prove incorrect.
