1 College hosts annual Career Week A student talks with a representative from the CIA at Career W eek in February. A Newsletter for Alumni and Friends College of Engineering University of Hawaii at Manoa Spring 1995 Students learned inside tips and helpful hints about entering the job market from engineering professionals in February at Career Week. Career W eek, an annual College of Engineering program started in 1988, was held at the University of Hawaii Cam pus Center February 22, 23 and 24. Organized by the Engineers Council of the University of Hawaii (ECUH), the activites consisted of an alumni panel session and a reception on the first day. Day two offered a com pany panel session, and a 24-com pany poster session rounded out the final day of the program. Eric Kaneshiro, a junior m ajoring in electrical engineering, was impressed with the inform ation he received from attending the activities. "I like that it (Career W eek) is so informal," he said. "The panelists will answ er any questions you have." The alumni panel was made up of eight recent College of Engineering graduates. The panelists main focus was on what it takes to obtain a job after graduation. All of the alumni agreed that students should concentrate on improving their "people skills." They said persistence, a positive personality and good com m unication skills will win out over GPA when interviewing for a job. Panelist M ichelle Sakam oto, a project engineer at Oahu Construction Company, advised students to do a little research on the com pany before they go for an interview. "Little things," she said, "like finding out beforehand w hat the com pany s dress code is can m ake or break you in an interview." For example, wearing a three-piece suit would not be wise at her com pany because they dress very casually. Looking foolish is not a great way to start out an interview. Keith Asato, Electrical Designer I at Hawaiian Electric Com pany, told the audience to send out their resumes as soon as they can to as m any com panies as possible. He said, "Don t give up if the com pany doesn t hire you right away." A sato s application was on file for several m onths with HECO before they offered him a position. The alumni panelists agreed that the best classes for students to take to increase their m arketability are not in the College of Engineering. Enrolling in accounting, econom ics, speech and other courses useful when dealing with a business or the public will m ake an applicant more attractive to em ployers. HAWN HAWN TA TA The quadrangle. Q Sprg 1995 Received: UNIVERSITY OF HAWAII AT MANOA ~ LIBRARY Career Week has not always been a three-day affair. The program was formerly called "Career Night" and lasted just that - one night. In the past few years, the College and the Engineers Council of the University of Hawaii (ECUH) have worked to make it a longer, more informative program.

2 Congratulations Fall 1994 graduates A total of 83 undergraduates received their Bachelor of Science diploma in December. That is 19 more than the number of Fall 1993 graduates. M urayam a & A s sociates, H aw aiian Electric Com pany, Inc. and GTE Hawaiian Tel. The engineers gave students tips on getting hired and warned them about the negative aspects of being an engineer. "Engineers personal lives are wrecks," June Nakamura, President o f E ngineering Solutions, Inc., said. W ith all the hours an engineer puts in at work, there is not m uch time left for their friends and family. Lawton Kaya, the head of civil and structural engineering at the Navy Public W orks Center, said it is not uncom m on for engineers to w ork 60 hours a week. Often tim es engineers are paid a salary and are not com pensated for the overtim e they w ork the extra hours are ju st expected of them. N akam ura told students the best way to ensure a job in today s tough econom y is to take w hat you can get. If necessary, she advised, a young engineer should w ork parttim e for a com pany until they can Guy Kishaba Michael Izutsu Anita Hansen Chad Kodama Myron Kwock Lorita Kahikina Veronica Lam Yu Jun Lam Elsie Kaneshiro Brian Lock Charles Liu Darryl Kanno Gaudencio Lopez Clarence Liu Darren Kojima Dan Masumoto Kwok Fai Lo Lisa Koshimizu Mark Matsuda Garret Masuda Liana Lee Ivan Nakasone Joy Murayama Scott Murakami Rommel Ofalsa Charles Myers Nels Neumann Ryan Suzuki David Nakamoto Michael Onuma Anna Tam Nhat Nguyen Bryant Petty KyleTeraoka Keith Oshiro Jose Roo-Ortiz Kammy Teves James Smythe Felito Saoit Michiya Uehara Richard Sullivan Jeffrey Yee Edward Woo Adam Tolentino Kwun Pan Yeung Charles Tomlinson Woo Chong Yu Glen Uehara Holly Yuen Ryan Umemoto ChristoperZane Electrical Engineering Alan Chan Dennis Chen Xiaoliang Chen Florencio Cid Ka Chong Wong Mechanical Engineering Eric Arakaki Kala Crow Kevin Fong Glenda Garcia be hired on a more perm anent basis. The company poster session on the final day gave students an opportunity to talk face-to-face with com pany representatives and learn more about their businesses. The W ilson Okamoto & Associates, Inc. representative said their com pany participates in the poster session to see what kind of people the students are. Although not necessarily looking to hire someone, his corporation can gain insight into what the new graduates would be able to offer. Mai Tanigawa, Director of Science and Technology and Deputy Group Chief for the CIA, said the agency participated in Career W eek because, "We have had excellent results from hiring Pacific Islanders. W e are here because Pacific Islanders have proven to be invaluable assets in our great agency." Tanigawa said the recently retired Director of Security for the entire CIA was a University of Hawaii graduate. The CIA table was the busiest at the poster session. For all students who found the intrigue and benefits o f the CIA irresistible, agency representatives conducted interviews on campus in March. The following com panies participated in the poster session: Arm y Corps of Engineers Board of W ater Supply Building Department C.I.A. Dept, of Public W orks Dept, of Transportation Fletcher Pacific The Gas Com pany General Electric Com pany GMP Associates, Inc. Sam O. Hirota, Inc. RM Towill Corporation Verifone Co-Op G rant Torigoe, a senior in electrical engineering, said the local com panies tables were especially valuable to him since he wants to stay and w ork in Hawaii after graduation. Torigoe will not graduate until this summer, but said he is going to follow the panelists advice and send his resum e to com panies now to get a head start. Dr. Kazutoshi Najita, a professor in the Electrical Engineering D epartment, said Career W eek is beneficial for all engineering students. "It gives the students focus," he said. "They can see w hat all the studying is for." 2

3 College of Engineering graduation awards ceremony The Fall 1994 College of E n gineering graduates had the privilege of celebrating their com m encem ent twice in one weekend by attending two graduation cerem onies in their honor. In addition to the University graduation cerem ony (the first to be held in the new Special Events Arena) on Sunday, D ecem ber 19, the C ollege s graduates gathered with friends, family, staff and faculty the day before to be recognized as a class. The graduates were greeted by a proud audience in a crowded Keoni A uditorium in Jefferson Hall. C ollege of Engineering Dean Paul Yuen and the Vice Chair o f the Engineers Council, Garret P.C. The D ecem ber 9th com petition gave our M E students a chance to show off their talents while providing them with feedback on their senior projects. The design com petition was started in 1987 by M rs. Francis Rhodes M ontgom ery in m emory of her husband, who was a m echanical engineer. The seniors present and dem onstrate their projects after spending a year choosing, designing and assembling them. The projects are part of their required mechanical engineering classes and the students receive grades based on the results. Professors M ehrdad Ghasemi Nejhad and Ronald Knapp teach and advise the students. This year s team projects were a Sensor Label Dispenser, Human Powered Vehicle (HPV), M icroscale Point-Contact Tem perature Sensor and an Automatic Jar Loosening Device (AJLD). The sensor label dispenser was designed to aid a disabled music shop em ployee in placing a sensor label onto a CD holder. The dispenser was to place sensor labels accurately with the operator using only one hand. M embers of the team were Eric Arakaki, Kevin Fong and J. Carlos Roo-Ortiz. The HPV was designed and fabricated as a sem i-recum bent, single-rider bicycle. The team chose this type of vehicle configuration because it has proven to be the fastest to date with a world record speed in excess of 60 mph. M embers of the HPV team included Eduardo Barrientos, Kala Crow, M ark Fujita, Clifton Funakura, Jam es Ibanez, G rant Imamura, M ike Lam bert, Danny Li, Chris Luanglat, Bryant Petty, Felito Saoit, Jam ie Tom oyasu, Lucy W ong and Jeff Yee. 4 1995 Student Engineer of the Year City, State or Private Sector Transportation Engineers: If you are interested in sharing your expertise, highlights of your projects, or a tour of your work place or sites with ITE student chapter members, please contact Sharen Cho ( ) or Dr. Panos Prevedouros ( ). 4 Lucy W ong, a senior m ajoring in mechanical engineering, has been selected by the Hawaii Society of Professional Engineering (HSPE) as the 1995 Student Engineer of the Year. She was recognized, along with the Engineer and Young Engineer of the Year, at the Hawaii Council of Engineering Societies Engineers W eek Banquet on February 24. Despite her own amazement, it com es as no surprise to L ucy s friends, peers and teachers that she was chosen for the award. Lucy has been an excellent student throughout her entire education, but has worked extra hard and put even more effort into her college studies. She has a cum ulative GPA of 3.97 and a perfect GPA in her major Lucy credits her success in the classroom to persistence and, simply, trying to do her best. She m akes sure she is prepared for every exam she takes by studying in the library three to four hours nightly. "My friends say I m a perfectionist," she said. "They think I live for stress." Lucy agrees with them, but said she has a problem with procrastination, just like any other student. Aside from putting off the occasional assignment, Lucy is anything but a slacker. She seems to excel in m ost everything she does. One would think her perfect GPA is a sign that she ITE student chapter The ITE Student Chapter has entered its second year at UH. Thanks to the dedication and leadership o f last year s executive board, the chapter was able to provide engineering students with an additional path to an internationally established professional society. The chapter s first year began with the reception of a $500 award from the national ITE in the form of m anuals and video tapes. In addition, the annual does not have time for extra-curricular activities. Lucy proves that theory wrong. W hile counting the bruises on her legs from a recent collision with a softball, Lucy said she enjoys playing many different sports. She recently joined a softball league and is taking a Gracie Jiu-jitsu class for self-defense. She is also a good tennis player. Lucy played first singles for three years on the M ckinley High School tennis team, where she graduated valedictorian of her class. Besides her intellectual and athletic abilities, she is fluent in Cantonese and has a talent for drawing caricatures. Lucy is a m em ber of ASM E, ASHRAE and Pi Tau Sigma (of which she was president her junior year). Several awards and honors she has received include the College of Engineering Outstanding Sophomore of the Year Award, ACEC M em ber Organization Scholarship, American Consulting Engineers Council N ational Scholarship and TRW Space & Electronics Group Scholar. Originally an architecture student, Lucy switched to engineering after working at the University of Hawaii, Office o f Technology Transfer and Econom ic D evelopm ent (OTTED). It was her boss at OTTED who encouraged her to apply for her next job as a summer intern for TRW Space & Electronics Group. She said she enjoyed working at TRW in Redondo report to the district office resulted in a cash award of $ 100 for chapter activities. The chapter organized presentations, coordinated two successful membership drives and planned a fun get-together at Kakaako Park in the fall of The chapter also submitted an application to the "Adopt a Highway" cleanup program of the Hawaii Departm ent of Transportation. This semester the student chapter plans to participate in meetings of the Hawaii ITE, organize a Lucy Wong, 1995 Student Engineer of the Year Beach, California last sum m er because the com pany was laid-back and her co-w orkers treated her well. Currently Lucy is w orking on a Space Grant program with Dr. M ehrdad G hasem i Nejhad and his assistant, K athleen Doherty. She ex pects to graduate in December. W orking in the aerospace industry on the m ainland is her goal for the future. A research and developm ent position with an em phasis on m echanical design would be Lucy s ideal job, but she is also considering attending graduate school. "Some o f my professors have pretty m uch convinced me that it (attending graduate school) would be the best thing to do," she said. No m atter w hat her future holds, her resum e is proof enough that this w ell-rounded Student E n gineer of the Y ear will succeed. couple of site visits and create a student chapter T-shirt. The chapter looks forward to the allocation of perm anent quarters where it can conduct business and the creation o f a traffic laboratory in the C ollege of Engineering. " The student officers are President Sharon Cho, Vice-President Kevin M cm orrow, Secretary Ping O ngayo and Treasurer Cathy Koga.

6 ME competition continued from page 3 arthritic and physically challenged individuals open jars. The design was to accom m odate alm ost any size jar, be reliable and durable, and be easy to operate with limited hand strength. Mrs. M ontgom ery, who attends the com petition every year, com pared the quality o f the designs to those of Dr. Ghasemi Nejhad agreed. He said, "This year and 1993 were both excellent years." The students worked more on their presentations in class during the last semester, so im provem ent in that part of the program was evident, he said. Mrs. M ontgomery was pleased with the num ber of women participants and said she hoped the increase in female engineering students would continue. The com petition is supposed to be a fun time so when the judges choose a winning design, she said, "more em phasis is placed on creativity and presentation than perfection." W inners, who received monetary awards, were announced after the presentations and poster sessions. The students ended the afternoon (and a year full of hard work) with a pizza party. The results of the competition were as follows: 1 st Place = HPV 2nd Place = AJLD 3rd Place = M icroscale Point- Contact Tem perature Sensor 4th Place = Sensor Label Dispenser The H PV team is still using their project in com petition. They will go on to national com petition in the HPV Region IX Cham pionships at San Diego State University in April. Boeing appointed Dr. Adam J.P. Lloyd, Director of Engineering, Mechanical/Electrical Systems for the Boeing Commercial Airplane Group, as the University of Hawaii s executive focal. Dr. Lloyd is responsible for all electrical and mechanical systems in Boeing s commercial airplanes. Boeing also appointed Edward A. Clifford, Director of Human Resources, Engineering Division, as a Mason to the College of Engineering. Boeing wants more involvement in college curricula The U niversity of Hawaii College of Engineering was one o f 74 schools invited to attend the Boeing-University W orkshop in Seattle, W ashington. Dean Paul Yuen and A ssistant Dean Sheryl N ojim a attended the two-day w orkshop on February 13th and 14th. It was an honor for the College of Engineering to attend; the schools invited were identified as key schools Boeing would like to becom e more involved with. Boeing and the engineering deans discussed future goals for college and com pany interaction. Boeing is highly com mitted to engineering education in the United States and feels the success of their com pany is largely dependent upon the type of engineer the universities produce. Boeing is m aking huge cutbacks in their company, so they need less people to do more work. For this reason, Boeing will be looking for engineering graduates who are team players, have a broad educational background, are flexible to change and are lifelong learners. Attitude is becom ing a m ajor determ inant of success and high perform ance as opposed to GPA, said the Boeing representatives. D uring the workshop group sessions, some of the common needs identified by the engineering deans included the following: M aintain sustainable relationships with Boeing and industry Increased industry involvem ent and input into accreditation (ABET) issues and engineering education reform Personnel exchange program s (industry engineers and engineering faculty) Financial support and/or in-kind donations Lobbying O f the 74 schools across the nation invited, 68 were able to attend and participate. Correction Dr. A rthur N.L. Chiu (civil engineering) was awarded a Board of R egents M edal for Excellence in Teaching in His name was not included in the W inter 1994 Quadrangle list of College of Engineering professors whom have received the award. Hi Chang Chai (m echanical engineering), Bruce Liebert (m echanical engineering), V inod M alhotra (electrical engineering), Peter Nicholson (civil engineering) and Chiu have all won teaching excellence awards. 6
