3 Preface 2003 began with the successful achievement of the third milestone in the Centre for Micro-Photonics (CMP) development; the CMP officially became a node of the Australian Research Council Centre of Excellence for Ultrahigh-bandwidth Devices for Optical Systems (CUDOS). Professor Gu is the Director of the node, an Executive Member of CUDOS, the Manager of the microphotonics program, and the project leader of the 3-D photonic crystals. To further strengthen the CUDOS project at Swinburne, Dr. Martin Straub was appointed a Senior Research Fellow. One of the main events for the CMP in 2003 was a formal review by an external panel appointed by the University. I am very glad to announce that the review panel highly commended the achievement of the CMP by citing: Centre s research outcomes as being excellent and significant in three or four areas within which it works including femtosecond 2 photon interactions and spectroscopy, 3-D photonics materials, near field, fluorescence microscopy and medical photonic diagnostics. I would like to take this opportunity to thank the University and all CMP members, past or current students and staff, for their critical and outstanding support and contributions. To achieve the next objective of the CMP, we re-organised the structure of the CMP. Consequently, the CMP will be focused on two research programs, biophotonics and nanophotonics. As part of the restructuring, a position of deputy director was introduced to assist the Director in the aspects of general management and postgraduate coordination. As a result, Dr. Xiaosong Gan was elected to be a deputy director of the CMP for 12 months. To strengthen the teaching program in the Photonics course in the School, Dr. James Chon, a former postdoctoral research fellow of the CMP, was appointed as a Lecturer. In addition, three new faces joined the CMP, Ms. Benita Hutchinson-Reade as a administrative officer and personal assistant (during Mrs Anna Buzescu s secondment), Dr. Le-Huong Nguyen as a postdoctoral fellow and Ms. Ling Fu as a PhD student. The highlights of the CMP research in 2003 are summarized as follows. Together with other colleague Universities, the CMP was awarded an ARC Linkage Infrastructure Equipment Grant (LIEF) for a new electron microscope (Min Gu and Martin Straub are the Chief Investigators of the Grants). Dr. James Chon was awarded the ARC Institutional Grant on nanophotonics. Professor Min Gu received an ARC Linkage International Grant for collaboration with Massachusetts Institute of Technology on biophotonics. The total number of publications from the CMP in 2003 was 60 (1 book chapter; 2 edited volumes of conference proceedings, 16 internationally refereed journal papers, 1 proceedings paper; 39 conference abstracts, and 1 review article). CMP staff members delivered three public seminar presentations and 10 invited presentations at international conferences. Professor Gu was elected as a Fellow of the International Society for Optical Engineering (SPIE) in
4 Our paper entitled Parametric study of three-dimensional near-field Mie scattering by dielectric particles published by Ganic, Gan and Gu in Optics Communications was one of the 10 most downloaded papers in We generated the world s first multiple higher-order bandgaps in infrared polymer photonic crystals, which forms an innovative foundation of the next-generation alloptical devices. Our results were published in Physics Review Letters and featured in Laser Focus World. We proposed the concept of multiphoton-induced micro-spectroscopy under total internal reflection. This idea was successfully applied in studying the physical property of nanocrystal quantum dots. Our result was reported in Biophotonics International. Based on the results of Dr. Damian Bird who was a previous PhD student of the CMP, a group of Swinburne business students established a spin-off company (InVision Medical Technologies Pty. Ltd.). The business plan for this new company received several awards. These included: 1. The Chancellor s Prize of the Swinburne Venture Cup in The Winning Venture Prize (an international business plan competition organized by University of Texas at Austin) 3. Australian Distributor Incubator Prize (a Victorian Government funded program) in A CMP PhD student, Dennis McPhail, established a spin-off company, InFocus Enterprises Pty. Ltd., according to his result with photonic devices based on polymerdispersed liquid crystal material. At the end of 2003, the new CMP Nanophotonic Fabrication Facility was officially launched. This cutting-edge Facility integrates the ultrafast laser technology and modern superresolution optical microscopy. The operation of this Facility has formed a firm and unique foundation for the future research projects in the area of nanophotonics, a key to next-generation nanotechnology and biotechnology. It is clear that CMP has become a viable research and training Centre in photonics at Swinburne. I would like to thank two Vice Chancellors, Professor Iain Wallace and Professor Ian Young, Deputy Vice Chancellor Professor Dale Murphy, Pro Vice Chancellor Professor Kerry Pratt, the Chancellery Office and many other offices of Swinburne, for their continuing support. Professor Min Gu Chair of Optoelectronics Melbourne, May
5 Mission Statement To become an internationally leading centre in the area of micro-photonics. To create a world-class laboratory for training research students.
