Chapter 1 : Frank Lloyd Wright Houses for Rent AFAR One thing we can agree on, is that Frank Lloyd Wright's Ennis house, up for sale in Los Feliz, California, is a dream of a home. The Ennis house, which appeared in the sci-fi classic Blade Runner, is hitting the market, and for a meager 23 mil, you can live in a piece of architectural and cinematic history. Wright, an itinerant year-old musician and preacher. There is uncertainty over whether Frank was given the middle name Lincoln at birth. However, he later adopted Lloyd as his middle name. The young Wright attended the University of Wisconsin at Madison for a few terms in â 86 as a special student, but as there was no instruction in architecture, he took engineering courses. In order to supplement the family income, Wright worked for the dean of engineering, but he did not like his situation nor the commonplace architecture around him. He dreamed of Chicago, where great buildings of unprecedented structural ingenuity were rising. The early Chicago years Wright left Madison early in for Chicago, where he found employment with J. Silsbee, doing architectural detailing. Silsbee, a magnificent sketcher, inspired Wright to achieve a mastery of ductile line and telling accent. In time Wright found more rewarding work in the important architectural firm of Dankmar Adler and Louis Sullivan. Wright soon became chief assistant to Sullivan, and in June he married Catherine Tobin. He worked under Sullivan until, at which time he opened his own architectural practice. His family grew to six children, while his firm grew until as many as 10 assistants were employed. The first work from the new office, a house for W. It was a solid compliment, but Wright refused, and this difficult decision strengthened his determination to search for a new and appropriate Midwestern architecture. By Prairie architecture was mature, and Frank Lloyd Wright, 33 years old and mainly self-taught, was its chief practitioner. The Prairie school was soon widely recognized for its radical approach to building modern homes. Utilizing mass-produced materials and equipment, mostly developed for commercial buildings, the Prairie architects discarded elaborate compartmentalization and detailing for bold, plain walls, roomy family living areas, and perimeter heating below broad glazed areas. Comfort, convenience, and spaciousness were economically achieved. Wright alone built about 50 Prairie houses from to His works were featured in local exhibitions from through In that year he built the home of the W. Willitses, the first masterwork of the Prairie school. In he traveled to Japan. Most remarkable were his works for business and church. The administrative block for the Larkin Company, a mail-order firm in Buffalo, New York, was erected in demolished in Abutting the railways, it was sealed and fireproof, with filtered, conditioned, mechanical ventilation; metal desks, chairs, and files; ample sound-absorbent surfaces; and excellently balanced light, both natural and artificial. Two years later the Unitarian church of Oak Park, Illinois, Unity Temple, was under way; in it was registered as a national historic landmark. Built on a minimal budget, the small house of worship and attached social centre achieved timeless monumentality. The Unity Temple improved on the Larkin Building in the consistency of its structure it was built of concrete, with massive walls and reinforced roof and in the ingenious interior ornament that emphasized space while subordinating mass. Unlike many contemporary architects, Wright took advantage of ornament to define scale and accentuation. In that year Wright began work on his own house near Spring Green, Wisconsin, which he named Taliesin, before he left for Europe that September. With a draftsman, Taylor Willey, and his eldest son, Lloyd Wright, the architect produced the numerous beautiful drawings published in these portfolios by reworking renderings brought from Chicago, Oak Park, and Wisconsin. By Wright and Cheney, still unmarried since Wright could not get a divorce, were living at Taliesin. In Wright designed his first skyscraper, a slender concrete slab, prophetic but unbuilt. At this time the Japanese began to consider Wright as architect for a new Tokyo hotel where visitors could be officially entertained and housed in Western style. Thus, early in he and Cheney spent some months in Japan. The following year Wright was occupied in Chicago with the rushed construction of Midway Gardens, a complex planned to include open-air dining, other restaurants, and clubs. Symmetrical in plan, this building was sparklingly decorated with abstract and near-abstract art and ornament. Its initial success was cut short by Prohibition, however, and it was later demolished. Just before Midway Gardens opened, Wright was dealt a crushing blow; Cheney and her children, who were visiting her at Taliesin, and four others were killed by an Page 1

insane houseman, and the living quarters of the house were devastated by fire. Stunned by the tragedy, Wright began to rebuild his home and was soon joined by the sculptor Miriam Noel, who became his mistress. In they went to Japan, which was to be their home for five years. Because of its revolutionary, floating cantilever construction, it was one of the only large buildings that safely withstood the devastating earthquake that struck Tokyo in In and Wright built four houses in California, using textured concrete blocks with a fresh sense of form. His relationship with Miriam Noel ended, and in Taliesin again burned, struck by lightning, and again Wright rebuilt it. In Wright had met Olgivanna Hinzenberg; soon she came to live with Wright permanently, and they married in Amid these debacles, Wright began to write An Autobiography, as well as a series of articles on architecture, which appeared in and In Wright designed a tower of studios cantilevered from a concrete core, to be built in New York City; in various permutations it appeared as one of his best concepts. In the St. Library of Congress, Washington, D. Meanwhile an exhibition of his architecture toured Europe and the United States. In the same year the Wrights opened the Taliesin Fellowship, a training program for architects and related artists who lived in and operated Taliesin, its buildings, and further school structures as they built or remodeled them. From 20 to 60 apprentices worked with Wright each year; a few remained for decades, constituting his main office staff. In the winter Wright and his entourage packed up and drove to Arizona, where Taliesin West was soon to be built. At this time Wright developed an effective system for constructing low-cost homes and, over the years, many were built. International success and acclaim Wright gradually reemerged as a leading architect; when the national economy improved, two commissions came to him that he utilized magnificently. The first was for a weekend retreat near Pittsburgh in the Allegheny Mountains. This residence, Fallingwater, was cantilevered over a waterfall with a simple daring that evoked wide publicity from to the present. The second important commission was the administrative centre for S. Johnson, wax manufacturers, at Racine, Wisconsin. Here Wright combined a closed, top-lit space with recurving forms and novel, tubular mushroom columns. The resulting airy enclosure is one of the most humane workrooms in modern architecture. Each of these buildings showed Wright to be as innovative as younger designers and a master of unique expressive forms. His designs for the campus and buildings of Florida Southern College at Lakeland â 49 were begun, and the V. Morris Shop in San Francisco was executed. The Guggenheim Museum was commissioned as early as to house a permanent collection of abstract art. Wright was a great originator and a highly productive architect. He designed some buildings, of which were actually built and about are still standing. Throughout his career he retained the use of ornamental detail, earthy colours, and rich textural effects. His sensitive use of materials helped to control and perfect his dynamic expression of space, which opened a new era in American architecture. The boldness and fertility of his invention and his command of space are probably his greatest achievements. Page 2

The residence is located at Bear Run in a rural area of Mill Run, Pennsylvania, approximately 50 miles southwest of Pittsburgh. The story behind the unusual design, difficult and often contentious construction, and challenging restoration is complicated. Over time, the main cantilever over the waterfall has proven to be the most difficult area of the building to stabilize. Originally, the Kaufmanns owned a cabin and property that included a waterfall at Bear Run that they used for many years as a rural retreat. They regularly hosted many groups of employees to the site and enjoyed the surrounding landscape and rustic environment. By, the Kaufmanns had amassed 1, acres at Bear Run. With the eventual deterioration of the cabin, situated near a road, and increasing traffic, Kaufmann, Sr. After meeting Wright at Taliesen, Kaufmann, Sr. Wright visited the Bear Run site in November, and plans for a house began to evolve. Ten months later, the following September, Kaufmann, Sr. No physical plans had yet been drawn, although Wright had assured the Kaufmanns over that month period that progress on a plan for a residence at the Bear Run site was well underway. With only two hours notice, Wright and his apprentices produced the drawings that were presented to Kaufmann, Sr. Challenges and Conflicts Although Kaufmann, Sr. The result is Fallingwater as it exists today in its organic and natural setting with its series of reinforced concrete cantilevered balconies. In the end, Kaufmann, Sr. The main cantilever exhibited a significant deflection immediately after the forms were removed. Over time, this issue created structural problems for both cantilevers. These studies revealed significant additional deflections that needed immediate intervention. Temporary shoring was placed under the first floor cantilever until a solution could be reached that respected the integrity of the building and would allow the site to remain open to the public. As a result, a post-tensioning system was developed to remedy the deflection problems and properly support the cantilevers. Four beams and east-west joists support the first floor cantilever over the waterfall. Post-tensioning cables were added to strengthen three of these beams. After the post-tensioning system was in place, the house lifted. Local Players Construction on Fallingwater began in Many local craftsmen and unskilled laborers were employed to build the residence using local sandstone and boulders. The interior encompasses 2, square feet, while the terraces consist of 2, square feet. Hall also oversaw the construction of the 1, square foot guest house. In, Kaufmann, Jr. Designated a National Historic Landmark in, Fallingwater is one of very few Wright buildings with its artwork, furnishings, and setting entirely intact. Over 5 million visitors have come to the site since it opened in Stories of saving those treasures will be shared through partnership with the American Architecture Foundation. 4 Chapter 3 : List of Frank Lloyd Wright works - Wikipedia Chronological list of houses, commercial buildings and other works by Frank Lloyd blog.quintoapp.com are over works by Wright on this list, which can be sorted individually by each column. When WWII broke out and many men enlisted, female students took over the construction. The first Wright building to be constructed on campus, the chapel exhibits many of his trademark architectural elements. Notably, the cantilevered wings give the impression the building is floating above the ground. Courtesy of Florida Southern College 3 of 12 Esplanades, These covered walkways, more than a mile in total length, connect the buildings in a geometric pattern. The supports are said to suggest orange trees. The esplanades are trimmed in copper, which Wright used for its natural green patina. During the war years, students built these first Wright designs: Courtesy of Florida Southern College 5 of 12 T. Now known as the Thad Buckner Building, this was originally the library. These two buildings were the first built by an outside construction firm rather than students, and Wright supervised the construction. The copper trim of the esplanades that connect them is extended into interior ceilings in the Fine Building. Symbolizing the fountain of knowledge, it is feet in diameter. The technology to create a dome of water did not exist in, and for years it sat as an open pool. Fully restored in, the Water Dome uses high-pressure nozzles to propel water as high as 45 feet, creating the dome Wright envisioned. It runs at set intervals throughout the day, though, to conserve water, it only operates at full power for special occasions. Originally intended as a classroom building and refectory, the Ordway Building was used instead as an industrial arts center and later as a student lounge. The building has two parallel arms with classrooms and offices connected by a courtyard. It is framed in native Florida tidewater red-cypress and still contains the original pews and cushions, designed by Wright and built by industrial arts and home economics classes. The laboratory ventilators on the roof were not part of the design and were added to comply with safety standards. Page 4

Chapter 4 : Frank Lloyd Wright Biography, Architecture, & Facts blog.quintoapp.com This Iconic Frank Lloyd Wright House Is a Major Gift to His Fans. On the th anniversary of the architect's birth, a donor ensures that the David and Gladys Wright House in Arizona will live on. His father, William Cary Wright â, [2] was an orator, music teacher, occasional lawyer, and itinerant minister. The blocks, known as Froebel Gifts, were the foundation of his innovative kindergarten curriculum. Anna, a trained teacher, was excited by the program and bought a set with which young Wright spent much time playing. The blocks in the set were geometrically shaped and could be assembled in various combinations to form three-dimensional compositions. In his autobiography, Wright described the influence of these exercises on his approach to design: The Wright family struggled financially in Weymouth and returned to Spring Green, where the supportive Lloyd Jones clan could help William find employment. They settled in Madison, where William taught music lessons and served as the secretary to the newly formed Unitarian society. Although William was a distant parent, he shared his love of music, especially the works of Johann Sebastian Bach, with his children. Soon after Wright turned 14, his parents separated. The divorce was finalized in after William sued Anna for lack of physical affection. William left Wisconsin after the divorce, and Wright claimed he never saw his father again. Education â [ edit ] Wright attended Madison High School, it is unknown if he graduated. While there, Wright joined Phi Delta Theta fraternity, [7] took classes part-time for two semesters, and worked with Allan D. Conover, a professor of civil engineering. As a result of the devastating Great Chicago Fire of and a population boom, new development was plentifcity. Wright later recalled that while his first impressions of Chicago were that of grimy neighborhoods, crowded streets, and disappointing architecture, he was determined to find work. Within days, and after interviews with several prominent firms, he was hired as a draftsman with the architectural firm of Joseph Lyman Silsbee. Maher, and George G. Wright soon befriended Corwin, with whom he lived until he found a permanent home. However, Wright soon realized that he was not ready to handle building design by himself; he left his new job to return to Joseph Silsbeeâ this time with a raise in salary. For that matter, Sullivan showed very little respect for his employees, as well. Wright later engaged Mueller to build several of his public and commercial buildings between and The two had met around a year earlier during activities at All Souls Church. Sullivan did his part to facilitate the financial success of the young couple by granting Wright a five-year employment contract. Wright made one more request: The existing Gothic Revival house was given to his mother, while a compact shingle style house was built alongside for Wright and Catherine. Wright admitted that his poor finances were likely due to his expensive tastes in wardrobe and vehicles, and the extra luxuries he designed into his house. To supplement his income and repay his debts, Wright accepted independent commissions for at least nine houses. These "bootlegged" houses, as he later called them, were conservatively designed in variations of the fashionable Queen Anne and Colonial Revival styles. Nevertheless, unlike the prevailing architecture of the period, each house emphasized simple geometric massing and contained features such as bands of horizontal windows, occasional cantilevers, and open floor plans, which would become hallmarks of his later work. Sullivan knew nothing of the independent works until, when he recognized that one of the houses was unmistakably a Frank Lloyd Wright design. In An Autobiography, Wright claimed that he was unaware that his side ventures were a breach of his contract. When Sullivan learned of them, he was angered and offended; he prohibited any further outside commissions and refused to issue Wright the deed to his Oak Park house until after he completed his five years. Wright could not bear the new hostility from his master and thought the situation was unjust. Tafel also recounted that Wright had Cecil Corwin sign several of the bootleg jobs, indicating that Wright was aware of their illegal nature. Although Cecil Corwin followed Wright and set up his architecture practice in the same office, the two worked independently and did not consider themselves partners. The loft space was shared with Robert C. Mahony, the third woman to be licensed as an architect in Illinois and one of the first licensed female architects in the U. His first independent commission, the Winslow House, combined Sullivanesque ornamentation with the emphasis on simple geometry and horizontal lines. For his more conservative clients, Wright designed more traditional dwellings. In spite of guaranteed success Page 5

and support of his family, Wright declined the offer. The birth of three more children prompted Wright to sacrifice his original home studio space for additional bedrooms and necessitated his design and construction of an expansive studio addition to the north of the main house. As his son John Lloyd Wright wrote: Five men, two women. They wore flowing ties, and smocks suitable to the realm. I know that each one of them was then making valuable contributions to the pioneering of the modern American architecture for which my father gets the full glory, headaches, and recognition today! The articles were in response to an invitation from the president of Curtis Publishing Company, Edward Bok, as part of a project to improve modern house design. Although neither of the affordable house plans was ever constructed, Wright received increased requests for similar designs in following years. Martin House in The Robie House, with its soaring, cantilevered roof lines, supported by a foot-long m channel of steel, is the most dramatic. Its living and dining areas form virtually one uninterrupted space. It is sometimes called the "cornerstone of modernism". Prairie-style houses often have a combination of these features: One or two-stories with one-story projections, an open floor plan, low-pitched roofs with broad, overhanging eaves, strong horizontal lines, ribbons of windows often casements, a prominent central chimney, built-in stylized cabinetry, and a wide use of natural materialsâ especially stone and wood. Wright first used his textile block system on the Millard House in Pasadena, California, in The Ennis house is now used in films, television, and print media to represent the future. As a lifelong Unitarian and member of Unity Temple, Wright offered his services to the congregation after their church burned down, working on the building from to Wright later said that Unity Temple was the edifice in which he ceased to be an architect of structure, and became an architect of space. Leave a comment Architectural Drawing of the James Charnley House [Historic Architecture and Landscape Image Collection] In this three-part series, I will be examining the relationship between the architect Frank Lloyd Wright and his mentor Louis Sullivan, specifically in the controversy surrounding one of the most important designs in early modern architecture: No sketches, no plans, no furnished interior photos survive of the home. Because of this lack of concrete contemporary evidence and the fact that scholars never conducted a detailed investigation over the years, one can see how easy it was for Wright to claim this ground-breaking design as his own. Contents Sullivan and Wright: Well, to a certain extent â but for anyone who has studied Wright, it is a well-known fact the architect continually made deceptive and self-serving statements throughout his year career. During their partnership, Adler and Sullivan designed almost buildings between and Before Wright joined the firm in, nearly 60 residences, more than any other building type, were built. After the success of the Auditorium, the firm might not have forcefully sought out residential buildings but they did continue to design them although the majority of them were unbuilt ; 13 to be exact, or 2 a year. Not known to delegate responsibilities, Sullivan usually kept a close eye on his young staff, even when it came to residential work. Cleveland Avenue in Chicago. Yet each surviving building is important in telling a story and giving a better understanding into the different phases of their work. A portrait of architect George Elmslie, circa Instead of having his own private office, Wright actually shared a small room with Elmslie. Richardson than the influence of Wright. Unlike Wright, Elmslie did not declare every single Sullivan commission as his own. Roloson Rowhouses in the s with their original balusters, which were supposedly designed by George Elmslie. Wright would never have been left on his own as Sullivan was known to always supervise his draftsmen. While Elmslie understood the difference between the two, Wright did not. It was not a prominent commission, and that might have been the reason Sullivan gave his year-old draftsman more leeway in its design. With the exception of Sullivanesque touches in the ornament in the window bays and arched entries, the stone and brick building is a rather unexceptional and somewhat awkward design. In Wright would even admit, although a bit reluctantly, to preservationist Richard Nickel that he designed the building. Part of the building was demolished for the widening of Randolph Street in, with the rest to follow in Located in suburban Chicago Heights, the hotel and its storefronts were modified over the years and just before its scheduled demolition in, the building was destroyed by fire. The residences of Potter Palmer and the Archbishop of Chicago are considered to be the first real homes of the Gold Coast. But in the s developer Potter Palmer soon transformed the area with landfill, then convinced the city to build a seawall, just north of Bellevue Place, as well as create a relatively quiet boulevard, Lake Shore Drive, adjacent to his forty-two room mansion that was to be used for carriage rides up to Lincoln Park. Not only would these improvements enhance his property values but hopefully attract other affluent families to relocate here from Prairie Avenue and the South Side. The public Chicago City Cemetery was located in what is now the southern part of Lincoln Park, but the old Catholic Cemetery stretched along Astor Street until the s. But that would soon change. In 30 short years the neighborhood had been transformed from an open marsh to an urban environment. Pauling Apartments at N. Pauling Apartments was built on the block of Astor Street, a prime example of how the area rapidly transformed from an undeveloped piece of land to a bustling neighborhood just as Potter Palmer had hoped. Passport photos of Douglas Charnley in and his mother Helen Charnley? Known for its aggressive real estate development, in which it promoted communities as winter resorts for Midwesterners, especially along the Gulf of Mexico, Illinois Central was the connection that led the Charnleys and Sullivan to work together, not once but twice. This portrait of Louis Sullivan at his cottage in Ocean Springs, Mississippi was probably taken in when he was 43 years old and working on his own without Dankmar Adler. Sullivan was exhausted after the work that went into the landmark Auditorium Building. It was during this trip that they decided to live next to each other. The Charnleys, like Sullivan, were private people who rarely socialized so this arrangement was more than just convenient. It speaks to what must have Page 7

been a close friendship Sullivan and Mrs. Wright never even visited the site, a beautifully natural setting of oak, hickory, and pine trees that served as inspiration for Sullivan. Sullivan personally landscaped the grounds to include two rose gardens, arranged in concentric circles. Sullivan lived here for the next eighteen years, staying for months at a time as his career slowed down. Portrait of Helen Charnley as a young woman, probably taken in the s. Newspaper blurb about a social function at the Charnley home in February Not a single photograph has been found of him. It is also worth noting that Helen Charnley, like her husband, was not as socially active as other ladies of the day and it is believed she did not belong to a single social organization. Yet their reputation for being extremely private is somewhat contradictory. In the Chicago Tribune listed her as a participant in a Christmas charity dance. The Chicago Inter Ocean, a newspaper published from to, had a society article in which guests attended a reception at the Charnley home in It was not until recently that a few photos of Mrs. Charnley were found â one dating from before the house was built and another taken long after she moved away from Chicago. Portraits of Charles M. The brothers were in the lumber business together, but some bad investments left Charles broke and he was forced to move in with his brother for a short period of time. His wife followed him a few days later. Due to embarrassment and disgrace, two of his sons committed suicide. Under an assumed name, year-old James Jr. His cousin Douglas Charnley had to identify the body. A little over six months later in June, year-old Charles Jr. No other house in the United States was like Charnley in its total abstraction, its scarcity of ornament limited to specific areas in the balcony, cornice, and window grilles, and its manipulation of composition and scale. Built to the edges of a shallow 25 ft deep lot, the Charnley House appears to be a freestanding mansion with three finished exterior facades and one wall left blank in anticipation of an attached neighbor to the back. The Charnley House, just one and a half rooms deep, was built with a party wall because a home was supposed to be attached to the back of it. Charnley was no exception. A hierarchical composition visually separates the parts but ultimately achieves a balanced whole. The limestone base surrounds the entrance and alcove windows, which Wright later adopted in his Winslow House design a couple of years later. Although Adler and Sullivan used similar outlined entrances in the St. Louis Mercantile Club and the Portland Building The limestone base of the Charnley House. One can only imagine what people thought of the building in the late 19th century. The home is assertive and stylish, but at the same time not overly complex or showy. In the newly formed Commission on Architectural Landmarks designated the home as one of forty buildings that were official city landmarks. Design Motifs Some historians, while questioning Frank Lloyd Wright as the sole architect of the Charnley House, believe he at least had a hand in some of the ornamentation. After, Sullivan had a number of capable assistants and draftsmen, yet the final result rarely deviated from his original drawings. The most obvious examples on the exterior are the balcony panels and front door ironwork grille. There are a few examples in the home that are rigid in some places and do not have the natural fluidity associated with Sullivan. Yet like all the motifs, the theme is carried from the inside to outside, specifically in the basement window grilles and leaded glass balcony doors. Examples of the circle-in-a-square motif include the balcony doors, fireplace mosaic, closet doors, and window grilles. Found on most of the door ware, panels, and moldings of the interior, beading can also be seen in an unexpected place on the outside; specifically the roof cornice. Such attention to detail is amazing, especially when you consider the fact that most people would not even see it all the way up there. Close-up of the dentil trim underneath the staircase and the bead detailing. The two buildings share a similarity in that they both have dentil trim underneath the treads of their main staircases.
