Marianne Berube lives and works in North Bay, Ontario. She originally graduated from Nipissing and York Universities with degrees in Environmental Science and Business. She has extensive experience within the Finance, Construction and Wood industries and now works for the Canadian Wood Council. Marianne sits on several boards. Marianne has been the Executive Director of Ontario Wood WORKS! for the past 14 years, building the program from its pilot launch to the Provincial initiative it is today. Ontario Wood WORKS! is recognized by architects, engineers, building officials, educators and all levels of government as a wood use advocate and a technical resource for information on the wood products industry and sustainable building. She is also the founder of the prestigious annual Wood WORKS! awards program, which has been adopted across Canada and the US. Patrick Cotter, AIBC, AIA, Partner, ZGF Cotter Architects Patrick Cotter is a Partner of ZGF Cotter Architects Inc. (ZGF Cotter), and has practiced architecture for over 23 years. After graduating from Simon Fraser University with a Bachelor of Arts and then obtaining a Bachelor of Architecture from the University of British Columbia, Patrick established Cotter Architects in 1995, where he served as Principal-in-Charge until the firm partnered with ZGF Architects LLP in Based in Vancouver, Patrick currently provides design leadership for a wide range of projects, including large-scale mixed-use and master-planned communities, senior living, healthcare, academic, and civic facilities. Patrick designed the first six-storey wood frame building in Canada, and is a recipient of the British Columbia Provincial Wood First Champion Award for his work in support of mid-rise wood construction. An expert in six-storey wood frame design, he routinely speaks both locally and nationally on the topic at industry seminars and conferences. Christian Dagenais, Eng. M.Sc., Scientist, Serviceability and Fire - Advanced Building Systems, FPInnovations Christian Dagenais is a fire scientist at FPInnovations, where his main research topics are structural fire performance of wood structures, performance-based design, fire modeling, and fire safety. Christian spent eight years as a product engineer for various structural engineered wood products companies and nearly five years as a Codes & Standards technical advisor at cecobois, a technical support organization for non-residential wood construction in Quebec. He actively participates on numerous Codes & Standards technical committees and working groups and is also co-leader of Theme III within the NEWBuildS research network on Fire, Acoustic and Vibration Serviceability.
2 Steve From, Western Red Cedar Lumber Association Steve From has been employed in the lumber industry in varying capacities since 1972, when he began working in sales at a British Columbia sawmill. For the past seven years, he has worked for the Western Red Cedar Lumber Association (WRCLA), where he provides training to design and building professionals as well as wholesale distribution and lumber retail staff. He has specialized in education related to Western Red Cedar since 1987 and also completed the WRCLA Cedar School in Vancouver. Prior to joining the WRCLA, he held a variety of sales, product management and purchasing director positions. Paul Golini, Executive Vice President and Co-Founder, Empire Communities Paul Golini is the Executive Vice President and Co-Founder of Empire Communities, a leading Ontariobased real estate development company. ln addition to his role at Empire, Paul was the Chair of the Building lndustry and Land Development Association (BILD) from , and a tireless champion of ethical building practices as they relate to the environment. He remains an active member at BILD; as Board member and Co-Chair of the Builder Council. He was a member of the steering committee for the Canada Green Building Council Canada for Homes Project. Member of EnerQuality Corporation Board of Directors, and appointed President on the Board of Directors for the ltalian Contemporary Film Festival (ICFF)-Toronto. Robert Jonkman, Director of Codes & Standards - Structural Engineering, CWC Completing a Bachelor of Civil Engineering and Management degree at McMaster University in Hamilton in 1994, Rob worked for one year at a structural engineering consulting firm and over nine years at Normerica Building Systems, a Canadian manufacturer of post and beam / timberframe buildings as Design and Engineering Supervisor. Rob joined the Canadian Wood Council s Codes and Standards division in September 2005 as Manager of Structural Engineering. Concentrating on structural engineering, building science, and energy issues, Rob managed the ongoing development of the Woodworks Engineering Software, participated on the Technical Research Committee of the Canadian Home Builder s Association, participated on building code committees (Structural and Energy) and is the Secretary/Associate for the Technical Committee on the Engineering Design in Wood (CSA O86) Standard. In January 2014 Rob became Director, Structural Engineering, where his responsibilities expanded to include the entire publication and software business centre. Erik Karsh, Principal, Equilibrium Consulting Eric began his structural consulting career in Ottawa in 1987 with the firm of AAR, designers of the Toronto Skydome. Eric moved to Vancouver in 1994, and in 1998, co-founded Equilibrium Consulting, a firm now recognized internationally as a leader in the field of timber engineering. Eric s award-winning work includes the Raleigh-Durham Airport expansion, North Vancouver Civic Centre Expansion and UBC Earth Sciences Building. Eric is co-author of the widely publicized Tall Wood report, featured by the Economist, CNN and National Geographic among many other publications.
3 Robert Kok, P.Eng., Director of Research and Development, Brockport Home Systems Ltd. Robert is the Director of Research and Development for Brockport Home Systems Limited. He is responsible for all engineering and technical aspects of this new company, optimizing the structure frame and the building envelope performance. Robert has been a Registered Professional Engineer since 1990 and is presently registered in the Provinces of Ontario, British Columbia, New Brunswick and Nova Scotia. Prior to joining Brockport in 2008, Robert held positions as Division Engineer for Weyerhaeuser (Trus Joist) (1996 to 2008) and as Engineering Department Manager, Truswal Systems of Canada ( ). Ing., Architect, Associate Director, Karakusevic Carson Architects, UK Stefan studied at the University of Arts Berlin and the Bauhaus University Weimar, Germany where he graduated with a Diploma in Architecture with Distinction in In this time Stefan worked closely with Prof. Hubert Riess from the University of Graz, Austria, developing innovative timber systems for architecture and construction. This led to a series of pioneering small projects in Berlin in conjunction with the architecture practice bj-design. Throughout his career, while working for Jaenisch & Jaenisch Architects in Berlin, he continued to focus on sustainable and environmental architecture and has since worked on ground- breaking schemes in this sector in Germany and the UK. Since joining Karakusevic Carson Architects in 2005, Stefan has led a number of award winning competitions entries for mixed use housing schemes, leisure & sports facilities and museums. Stefan has far reaching experience with Cross Laminated Timber which led to the award winning Code for Sustainable Homes (CfSH) Level 4 public sector housing scheme, Blythe Street Housing, constructed in CLT. Stefan also led the winning competition and successful planning process for the Barking Business Center in London. An 18 storey hybrid CLT/Concrete Tower with mixed residential and commercial use, designed to achieve excellent sustainable and environmental performance at CfSH Level 5. Stefan recently completed Bridport House, a five to eight storey urban housing scheme in Hackney, London entirely constructed in CLT which has achieved exceptional sustainable results and is currently the biggest structure built using CLT in Europe. Working with Karakusevic Carson Architects, Stefan has been responsible for a range of successful planning applications and scheme deliveries including the Mansford Estate, Claredale Street, Academy Street, Barking Business Centre, William Street Quarter and Colville
4 Estate Masterplan including the delivery of the 1st Phase; Bridport House. Stefan has a comprehensive knowledge of all work stages and is heavily involved in the technical, architectural and sustainable aspects of the practice. His expertise in the use of cross-laminated timber as a building material are utilized for the practice s biggest schemes across the UK and he continually strives for ways to push the boundaries of its use within the architectural and construction industry. Aamir Masood, M.Eng., P.Eng., Executive VP, StrucSoft Solutions Christoph Meier, Executive Management and Board President, Création Wood GmbH, Switzerland Christoph Meier is a construction engineer currently serving on the executive management team and as board president at Création Wood GmbH. One of his core competencies lies in the design of complex concrete-, steel- and timber structures. The team at Creation Holz AG realizes projects all over the world, especially timber. The diversity of static tasks is broad and ranges from long-span dome conference rooms, museums, residential and commercial buildings, multi-purpose halls to geometrically elusive free-form constructions. David Melia, Chief Executive Officer, Spring Valley Architectural Innovations David Melia, joined Spring Valley Architectural Innovations after having spent 26-years facilitating the growth of Canada s leading architectural companies. Bringing architectural innovation to life, helping companies create innovative products, developing markets and achieving other creative growth objectives has been his mission for the past 15 years. David has held executive management positions in both private and public organizations. He managed the global launch of a leading elearning software solution and built a virtual learning hospital which lead to the creation of KAAJENGA and the YKXchange for Architects - a social sharing & learning system for the architectural industry that centralizes and manages educational activity through CRM, promotes social sharing, reports on the analytics, and rewards activity. Continuing education models, commercial teaching and innovation are of particular interest. He spent two years guest lecturing at the University of New Brunswick and this fuels his passion to find new ways to teach and educate leaders. Adam Robertson, M.A.Sc., P.Eng., Manager of Codes & Engineering - Structural Engineering & Sustainability, Canadian Wood Council Adam joined the Canadian Wood Council in 2011 and holds the position of Manager in the Codes and Engineering department. Adam completed his Bachelor of Applied Science in Civil Engineering at the University of Toronto. He also holds a Master of Applied Science degree from the Department of Wood Science at the University of British Columbia. Adam was previously employed as a consulting structural engineer and has also worked in the construction management and building development fields. Adam is involved in CWC s building code and standards initiatives, the revision of CWC s design tools and publications and he is also responsible for the ongoing development and technical support of the WoodWorks Sizer, Shearwalls, and Connections software for both Canada and the United States. Alan Shaw, Chief Building Official, City of Sarnia and VP OBOA
5 Eric Sommer, President, Spring Valley Architectural Innovations Eric Sommer, Architectural Innovator, is a 30 year veteran of architectural product innovation with passion to be a thought leader that architects can rely upon and this has led him to find creative, unique wood solutions in collaboration with architects, engineers and wood specialists. His recent collaboration is the latest reflection of that desire to push the envelope of building technology and he looks to explore this and many others within this segment. His love of wood and his sharing nature compels him to share his ideas and concepts which have been installed all over Canada and the USA. New innovations are currently in development that will meet or exceed the new energy conservation, heritage wood dilemma facing building owners and developers. Eric Sommer is founder and President of Spring Valley Architectural Innovations, a team that includes architects, CAD designers, engineers, estimators, project managers, and an installation team. Anthony Spick, P.Eng. LEED AP, Senior Associate, Blackwell Anthony joined Blackwell in 2001 and became an associate in He studied at the British Columbia Institute of Technology, and the University of Waterloo where he earned his B.A.Sc. in Structural Engineering. Before joining the firm, he worked as a structural designer at Westview Dredging in Vancouver, consulting to the Marine Construction Industry, and at ETALCO in Washington State. consulting to the international heavy lift and transport industry. Anthony has been responsible for the design of many notable projects, including the residence for the Sisters of St. Joseph of Toronto, Fifth Town Artisan Cheese Company, Old Post Office Plaza in St. Louis, Yonge-Dundas Square Retractable Theatre, 294 Richmond Mixed Use Development, Haliburton 4C's Straw Bale Building, and the Niagara Credit Union in Virgil. He has particular expertise in adaptive reuse and new or unconventional materials and systems including: wood gridshells, structural glass, earthen structure, plastered straw bale, and total precast buildings. Anthony s interest and expertise in sustainable design practice and LEED design standards has led to collaborations on groundbreaking projects such as the Madoc Centre for the Performing Arts, which garnered an award of excellence in sustainable design from the Consulting Engineers of Ontario. Anthony has also worked as the project leader on a number of other award- winning LEED projects including the Haliburton 4C s Straw Bale Building, the LEED Gold Thomas L. Wells Public School, the Kinark Sustainable Classroom at Sir Sandford Fleming College, the LEED Platinum Fifth Town Artisan Cheese Factory and the LEED Platinum Cornell Plantations Brian C. Nevin Welcome Centre. Anthony is an adjunct professor in the faculty of Architecture at the University of Toronto and has been a frequent guest lecturer on Natural Building Structure at Fleming College. He is a LEED-accredited professional and a licensed Professional Engineer in the Provinces of Ontario and British Columbia. Steven Street, Technical Director, Ontario Wood WORKS! Steven joined the Wood WORKS! team in 2007 after a career in off-site panelisation and prefabrication. In his role as Technical Director, he provides information and technical support to design professionals, helping facilitate the increased use of wood products in commercial, industrial and institutional construction. Steven is actively involved in numerous key Canadian market development programs including Cross-Laminated Timber and the role wood plays in Mid-rise construction. He guest lectures at many Colleges and Universities on wood and wood use and is a regularly invited speaker at technical events presented by the OBOA, OWTFA, and the Canadian Wood Council.
6 Wood WORKS! is a national campaign to increase the use of wood in commercial, industrial and institutional construction. The Canadian Wood Council leads this project with funding support from the wood industry, the federal government and provincial governments across Canada. Wood WORKS! Ontario creates opportunities for wood products by providing education, resources and technical support related to designing and building with wood. Jim Taggart, FRAIC, Vancouver Jim worked as an architect and construction manager in Canada and the united Kingdom for 12 years, before leaving architectural practice to pursue parallel interests in education and communications. Since 1992, as a writer, editor and lecturer, Jim has focused on architecture and building technology, urban design and sustainable development. His most notable area of specialty is the use of wood in contemporary architecture, and he has written and lectured extensively on this subject for audiences across North America and abroad. Jim is the author or editor of more than a dozen books, including the award-winning Toward a Culture of Wood Architecture (2011). He is currently the editor of Sustainable Architecture and Building Magazine (SABMag) and teaches architecture at the BCIT School of Construction and the Environment in Vancouver. Jim is a Fellow of the Royal Architectural Institute of Canada and the 2012 recipient of the BC Premier s Wood Champion award Dan Tingley, Senior Wood Technologist / Structural Engineer, Ph.D., P.Eng., MIEust, CPEng. RPEQ Wood Research and Development (WRD) Oregon, USA and Caboolture, QLD, Australia Dr. Dan Tingley graduated from University of New Brunswick with a B. Sc. F.E. and later a M.Sc.C.E. Following this in the 90 s Tingley finished his Ph.D. in wood technology and structural engineering at Oregon State University. He has worked in the wood products field for 40 years. He currently serves as senior engineer for Wood Research and Development and Advanced Research and Development and makes his base in Portland Oregon. He has won the Civil Engineering Research Foundation s Charles Pankow Award for Structural Innovation as well as the Nova Award for all construction products issued by Construction Innovation Forum for his pioneer work in high strength fiber reinforcement of wood and wood composites. Tingley holds over 40 patents worldwide and has over 125 referred and non referred publications. He specializes in timber structures design and restoration with a significant interest in timber bridges. He is currently acting as senior engineer providing oversight on 20 timber bridge restoration projects world wide. Ineke Van Zeeland, M.Eng., ASFPE, Manager, Codes and Standards, Canadian Wood Council Ineke works in the Codes & Engineering division of the Canadian Wood Council. After completing a Bachelor of Engineering (Civil) degree at Carleton University, Ottawa, she worked for five years with the Fire Research Laboratory of Forintek Canada Corp. (now FPInnovations), the research organization of the Canadian wood products sector. There, she performed research related to the effects of fire on wood structures. She began work at the Canadian Wood Council after completion of a Master of Engineering degree in Fire Safety Engineering and a short stint as a sessional lecturer at Carleton University.
7 For two years, she was a Senior Project Engineer at the San Antonio, Texas fire laboratory of Intertek, an international testing organization, where she was primarily responsible for fire testing and certification of a wide variety of building and commercial products. Now back at the Canadian Wood Council, she participates in technical committees for fire test standards and building codes, for example the ASTM E05 Fire Test Committee, where she is the Secretary to the Committee; the ULC S100A Fire Test Committee; the NFPA Fire Committee; the Ontario Building Code Part 3 Advisory Committee; and various task groups under the National Building Code Standing Committees. She also participates in research and development projects on behalf of CWC, such as the National Research Council of Canada s Fire Performance of Houses project and the NRC Consortium on the Characterization of Fires in Multi-Suite Residential Dwellings. Dr. R. Sam Williams, Sam Williams and Associates LLC PhD., Materials Science Engineering (Polymer Chemistry), Washington State University, 1980 USDA Forest Service, Forest Products Laboratory, Madison, WI As Project Leader for the Wood Surface Chemistry Research Work Unit for 15 of my 30-year career at the Forest Products Laboratory (FPL), I was responsible for a broad research program to determine the cause of wood deterioration outdoors and to develop treatments and innovative products and processes for improving wood performance. An integral part of this work was laboratory and field evaluation of materials and the development of methods for monitoring changes of materials during outdoor exposure. Factors, such as UV radiation, time of wetness, and cyclic fatigue, were incorporated into accelerated laboratory tests to predict service life. Following retirement from FPL in June 2009, I formed Sam Williams and Associates (LLC), a consulting firm. Our mission is to evaluate wood-related performance in structures and work with architects, engineers, and builders to ensure long service life of wood used in residential and commercial structures. Author/coauthor of over 130 publications and 2 books. Jasmine Wang, Ph.D., P.Eng., Manager of Codes and Standards, Structural Engineering, Canadian Wood Council Jasmine Wang is a structural engineer and currently working as the Manager Codes & Standards - Structural Engineering with the Canadian Wood Council. Jasmine has Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering, Master of Applied Science in Structural Engineering, and Ph.D. in Timber Engineering. After successfully completed her Ph.D. at the University of British Columbia in 2010, she joined the CWC. Jasmine is involved in CWC s building code and standards initiatives, applied engineering problem-solving and the development of CWC s design tools and publications. Jasmine participates on the Technical Committee of CSA O86 Engineering Design in Wood and chairs the Wood Subcommittee of CAN/CSA S6 Canadian Highway and Bridge Design Code.
