Struc. Eng., Hochschule RheinMain University Wiesbaden BIO: Mr. Bathon is a professor in the Department of Architecture and Civil Engineering at Hochschule RheinMain University, in Wiesbaden, Germany. He is also co-director of the Institute of Building Materials and Structures at HS-RM University. He has over 20 years of experience in wood construction research and design, and his work has included managing material testing facilities, establishing the Timber Research Laboratory in Wiesbaden, and developing various innovative systems including CO2- neutral composite floor elements, intelligent building skins, and coupling systems for Timber Tower, a wind tower made out of timber. Of his recent work, the HBV system for achieving wood/concrete shear connections using steel mesh connectors and the HSK adhesive wood-steel connection system have received particular attention in the BC architecture and design community, having been employed in the iconic new Earth Sciences Building at UBC. Prof. Bathon currently runs a team of six researchers focusing on more efficient structural solutions using timber. The latest focus of the research lay in fatigue-performance of glued connections as used in the Timber Tower. François Bergeron, President, IC 2 Technologies Marianne Berube, Executive Director, Ontario Wood WORKS! BIO - Marianne Berube: Marianne Berube lives and works in North Bay, Ontario. She originally graduated from Nipissing and York Universities with degrees in Environmental Science and Business. She later obtained Professional Management and Certified Investment Management Degrees. She has extensive experience within the Finance, Construction and Wood industries and now works for the Canadian Wood Council. Marianne sits on several boards and is currently Vice-Chair on Nipissing University s Board of Governors. Marianne has been the Executive Director of Ontario Wood WORKS! for the past 12 years, building the program from its pilot launch to the Provincial initiative it is today. Ontario Wood WORKS! is recognized by architects, engineers, building officials, educators and all levels of government as a wood use advocate and a technical resource for information on the wood products industry and sustainable building. She is also the founder of the prestigious annual Wood WORKS! awards program, which has been adopted across Canada and the US. Throughout the years Marianne has been recognized for her efforts by receiving the CIBC Chairman s Award, an Influential Women s Award from Northern Ontario Business, the Ontario s Forest Sector Champion Award from the OFIA and a Nipissing University Influential Alumni Award.

2 David Bowick, P. Eng., Principal, Blackwell BIO: David Bowick has received many industry honours since he began his career in His inventive approach to design has made him sought-after, particularly when a project calls for innovative solutions. He is a three-time recipient of the WoodWorks Building the Future engineer award, and has received awards for his work in wood, concrete and architectural steel. Dozens of projects he has worked on have been granted awards in the field of architecture, such as such as the Perimeter Institute for Theoretical Physics and the French River Visitors Centre (both recipients of the Governor General s Award). An avid teacher, David is an adjunct professor in the Masters in Architecture program at the University of Toronto. He is a frequent guest speaker on the topics of architecture and engineering, and contributes to the industry through events and committees, including the Advisory Board of the Canadian Wood Council. His writing has appeared in several publications. David is a licensed professional engineer in the provinces of Ontario, British Columbia, Alberta and New Brunswick. He is a member of the Canadian Standards Association Technical Committee on CAN/CSA- O86, Engineering Design in Wood and a member of the Technical Committee responsible for the Engineering Guide for Wood Frame Construction. Steve From, Western Red Cedar Lumber Association BIO: Steve From has been employed in the lumber industry in varying capacities since 1972, when he began working in sales at a British Columbia sawmill. For the past four years, he has worked for the Western Red Cedar Lumber Association (WRCLA), where he provides training to design and building professionals as well as wholesale distribution and lumber retail staff. He has specialized in education related to Western Red Cedar since 1987 and also completed the WRCLA Cedar School in Vancouver. Prior to joining the WRCLA, he held a variety of sales, product management and purchasing director positions. Maik Gehloff, DI (FH), MASc, Director, Gheloff Consulting BIO: Maik holds a Dipl.-Ing. (FH) degree in Wood Science and Technology from the University for Applied Sciences in Eberswalde, Germany, as well as a MASc in Timber Engineering from University of British Columbia (UBC) in Vancouver. After finishing his degree in Germany and before attending UBC, he moved to Canada and worked as designer and project manager. During his studies at UBC, his research projects focused on these self-tapping, structural wood screws in all forms, shapes and applications, as well as other modern wood connectors. Maik now lives and works in Vancouver, British Columbia. Andrew Harmsworth, M. Eng., P. Eng., CP, Principal, GHL Consultants Ltd. BIO: With over 25 years experience in Fire Science and Building Code consulting, Andrew Harmsworth has developed specialized expertise in the application of Fire Science and Engineering of Building Code requirements. Andrew also led the GHL team that studied the risks involved in 5 and 6 storey wood frame construction in BC enacted as a code change to the BC Building Code in 2010 to permit midrise wood frame construction. Andrew s company, GHL, is the fire engineer on more than twenty 5 and 6 storey buildings with several now completed and occupied. With a Master s Degree in Fire Protection Engineering from UBC, Andrew s expertise is recognized in his appointment to the British Columbia Wood First Advisory board and the Board of Directors of NEWBuildS, the NSERC Research Network on

3 Innovative Wood Products and Building Systems. His expertise is also recognized in his selection to participate in the National Research Council / Canadian Wood Council task group on Higher Wood Buildings and to peer review the Fire section of the recently published Cross Laminated Timber Handbook (CLT) by FPInnovations and the Tall Wood Study. Malcolm Isaacs, P. Eng., Director, Canadian Passive House Institute BIO: Malcolm Isaacs is a civil engineering graduate of the University of Ottawa, with over 20 years experience as a consultant in Canadian low-energy construction techniques and energy conservation. He is a pioneer of Passive House construction in Canada, and in 2005 he designed and built the first house in Canada to Passive House specifications, in which he presently lives. He now works full-time on developing Passive House construction solutions for clients in the Ottawa area, and in teaching Passive House techniques as a member of CanPHI s training team. Malcolm has worked extensively at the PassivhausInstitut in Germany, and edited technical papers for the International Passive House Conferences in 2008 (Nurenburg) and 2009 (Frankfurt). Rob Jonkman P. Eng., Manager, Structural Engineering, Canadian Wood Council and BIO: Completing a Bachelor of Civil Engineering and Management degree at McMaster University in Hamilton in 1994, Rob worked for one year at a structural engineering consulting firm and over nine years at Normerica Building Systems, a Canadian manufacturer of Post and Beam Homes and Clubhouses as their Design and Engineering Supervisor. Joining the Codes & Engineering division of the Canadian Wood Council in September 2005 as Manager of Structural Engineering, Rob s primary focus is overseeing the ongoing development of the Woodworks Engineering Software to better meet the needs of practicing engineers and architects. Rob also liaises with the Canadian Home Builder s Association, participates on building code committees (Structural and Energy) and is the Secretary/Associate for the Technical Committee on the Engineering Design in Wood (CSA O86) Standard. Darren Kindrachuk, Principal Architect, Lend Lease, Australia BIO: Darren has a Bachelor of Environmental Studies (Arch) and a Master of Architecture (Hons) from the University of Manitoba. He is a member of the Hong Kong Institute of Architects, the Australian Institute of Architects, and is an accredited Green Star Professional (Green Building Council of Australia). He has won more than a dozen design, development and environmental awards in the last five years. Darren has a firm commitment to using a logical and analytical process to lead a design approach which is supported by the integrated architectural and engineering teams of Lend Lease design. With each new commercial or mixed-use project he embarks upon, Darren researches the technologies available and explores innovative approaches to create both aesthetic and system excellence. In this role, Darren has provided project review input and leadership related to development efficiencies, planning, design, buildability, sustainability and future-proofing strategies. His experience and ability to identify innovative concepts and environmentally positive opportunities for office, residential, retail and mixed-use developments has been provided to and influenced projects in Australia, Italy, Russia, China, Japan, United Kingdom and the Middle East. Currently Darren is in search of planning and building design solutions targeting absolute zero energy, water and waste outcomes.

4 Steve McManus, P. Eng., Structural Frame Engineer, Weyerhaeuser David Mizrahi, Eng. (ENSTIB, M.S.), Project Development, Nordic Engineered Wood Mr. Mizrahi graduated from the National School of Wood Sciences and Engineering (ENSTIB, France) with a master in Wood Sciences. After a few years working for Cadwork in the USA and Canada, he worked as a project manager for Chantiers Chibougamau as well as the design office Nordic Wood Structures that was newly-founded at the time. During a 7-year period, he worked on various projects (aircraft hangars, arenas, multi-storey buildings, soccer stadiums, etc.) and developed an expertise in glulam and CLT engineering, from the preliminary design phase all the way to the installation phase of the various structures. Mr. Mizrahi currently designs glulam and CLT structures for Nordic Wood Structures in Montreal, QC. M. Mohammad, PhD., P.Eng., Research Leader - Fire & Serviceability, Advanced Building Systems, FPInnovations BIO: Since 2001, Mohammad has been working as a Group Leader & Research Leader of the Structural then the Fire & Serviceability groups at FPInnovations in Quebec City. Prior to that, he worked at the Civil Engineering Department of the Royal Military College of Canada (RMC). Most of the research work at the RMC was focused on the performance of timber connections and rehabilitation of old timber structures. Mohammad graduated from the University of New Brunswick with a PhD degree in Timber Engineering in Currently, Mohammad is involved in several research projects dealing with the performance of connections and innovative wood-based systems in non-residential, mid-rise and tall wood construction, including CLT. In addition, he and his group provide technical support to the wood industry in the development of new and innovative wood-based products, involved with the design and construction communities and participate in codes and standards activities. Mohammad chairs the CSA O86 Task Group on CLT and is a member of the Fastenings Subcommittee of the Canadian Timber Design Standard CSA O86. Matthew S. Reid, MASc., P.Eng., Project Engineer, Read Jones Christoffersen BIO: Matthew graduated from Queen s University with a degree in civil engineering in 2002 and completed a master s degree from the Royal Military College of Canada in Matthew joined Blackwell Bowick Partnership in 2006 as an Engineer in Training and promoted to Associate in 2010 where he managed projects ranging from small to large residential, commercial and mid-size institutional renovations, addition and new construction. Matthew joined Read Jones Christoffersen in 2012 as a Project Engineer and has been involved in challenging fast tracked projects with a focus on adaptive reuse and timber. Matthew is a licensed professional engineer in Ontario, member of the Ontario Society for Professional Engineers, member of the Technical Committee for CSA A307 on Solid and Engineered Wood Products, member of the Wood Collectors Society and member of the Forest Product s Society Adam Robertson, M.A.Sc., P.Eng., Technical Services Specialist, Canadian Wood Council BIO: Adam Robertson joined the Canadian Wood Council in January 2011 as a Technical Services Specialist in the Codes and Engineering department. Adam completed his Bachelor of Applied Science in Civil Engineering at the University of Toronto. He also holds a Master of Applied Science degree

5 from the Department of Wood Science at the University of British Columbia. Adam was previously employed as a consulting structural engineer and has also worked in the construction management and building development fields. He is responsible for technical support of the WoodWorks Sizer, Shearwalls, and Connections software for both Canada and the United States. Sam Sarkhosh, M.A.Sc., P.Eng., Building Engineer, City of Toronto BIO: Sam Sarkhosh, M.A.Sc., P.Eng. has over 20 years of professional experience in the Building Industry. He has many years of experience working as a structural engineer and project manager in consulting and construction. Sam has been working for the City of Toronto as a Building Engineer since Sam received his Master's Degree in Structural Engineering from the University of Waterloo and his Bachelor's Degree in Civil Engineering from Tehran Polytechnic University. He is a member of the Professional Engineers of Ontario (PEO), the Toronto Area Chief Building Officials' Structural Advisory Committee (TACBOC-SAC) as well as a technical committee member of CSA Standard S304.1, Design of Masonry Structures. Al Stinson, Vice President, Canadian Institute of Forestry BIO: Al Stinson is a graduate of the Sir Sandford Fleming College forestry technical program in 1977, and has also successfully completed a number of the Ontario Professional Foresters exams from Lakehead University and the University of Toronto. Al is currently the Vice President of the Canadian Institute of Forestry and is a member of their National Executive. Al Recently retired after working predominantly for the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources (OMNR) for the past 36 years, during this time he held a variety of positions including: Forest Science Specialist, Operations Manager, Aboriginal Liaison Officer, Forester, and Fire Incident Logistics Coordinator. Al took a three year leave from OMNR to work with Tembec Inc. to help establish a forest science partnership program. Al's background has included extensive operational experience preparing and implementing silvicultural prescriptions. He has been a member of numerous forest management planning teams, and helped develop and deliver silvicultural training programs. He has participated in development of provincial level policy and guidelines relating to Silviculture. Al currently resides in North Bay Ontario and is married with four adult children. Jim Taggart, FRAIC, Vancouver BIO - Jim Taggart: Since leaving architectural practice in 1992, Jim has concentrated on public and professional education and communications in the areas of architecture, urban design and sustainable development. His most notable area of specialty is the use of wood in contemporary architecture. Jim has delivered nearly 100 professional development seminars on this subject in more than 30 cities across North America. He has also written a similar number of articles and case studies for technical and professional publications in Canada, the USA, Europe and Asia. He is also the author or editor of 10 books, the latest of which Toward a Culture of Wood Architecture, received an Independent Publishers award in Jim has taught architectural history and theory at the British Columbia Institute of Technology since 2004, and has been the editor of Sustainable Architecture and Building Magazine (SABMag) since He was inducted as a Fellow of the Royal Architectural Institute of Canada in 2010, and was the recipient of the Premier of British Columbia's Wood Champion Award in 2012.

6 Ineke Van Zeeland, M.Eng., ASFPE, Manager, Codes and Standards, Canadian Wood Council BIO: Ineke works in the Codes & Engineering division of the Canadian Wood Council. After completing a Bachelor of Engineering (Civil) degree at Carleton University, Ottawa, she worked for five years with the Fire Research Laboratory of Forintek Canada Corp. (now FPInnovations), the research organization of the Canadian wood products sector. There, she performed research related to the effects of fire on wood structures. She began work at the Canadian Wood Council after completion of a Master of Engineering degree in Fire Safety Engineering and a short stint as a sessional lecturer at Carleton University. For two years, she was a Senior Project Engineer at the San Antonio, Texas fire laboratory of Intertek, an international testing organization, where she was primarily responsible for fire testing and certification of a wide variety of building and commercial products. Now back at the Canadian Wood Council, she participates in technical committees for fire test standards and building codes, for example the ASTM E05 Fire Test Committee, where she is the Secretary to the Committee; the ULC S100A Fire Test Committee; the NFPA Fire Committee; the Ontario Building Code Part 3 Advisory Committee; and various task groups under the National Building Code Standing Committees. She also participates in research and development projects on behalf of CWC, such as the National Research Council of Canada s Fire Performance of Houses project and the NRC Consortium on the Characterization of Fires in Multi-Suite Residential Dwellings. Jieying Wang, Senior Scientist, Durability and Building Enclosure Group, FPInnovations BIO: Jieying Wang is a senior scientist in the Durability and Building Enclosure Group, Building Systems of FPInnovations. Since she joined FPInnovations (then operating as Forintek ) about eight years ago, her research has primarily focused on wood durability, moisture performance and thermal performance of wood-based building envelopes. She has been working with building science professionals in developing durable wall assemblies for cross-laminated timber (CLT) construction for its use in North America. She has been heavily involved in projects about differential movement in midrise wood construction. She has been working on the application of non-load-bearing wood walls in concrete structures. In recent years she has also focused on thermal performance and potential durability issues related to building envelope with increasing levels of thermal insulation. She has been playing an important role in developing the FPInnovations Technical Guide for the Design and Construction of Tall Wood Buildings in Canada. Jieying Wang obtained her PHD in wood science from Beijing Forestry University, China in 2000 and worked with Dr. Paul Cooper at the University of Toronto as post-doctoral research fellow from 2002 to Jieying has also been extensively involved in developing durability-related building codes and standards in China for the export market of Canadian wood products.
