4 2. CIAM 6 EXHIBITION DRAFT KEY THEMES THE MAKING OF THE CONGRESS INTERNATIONAL D ARCHITECTURE MODERNE ( ) (Exhibit: copies of original diagrams papers from Zurich, film of the making of their influential Athens Charter on a cruise liner) o How did the organization come about, what were it aims how did it work? - Explain how was CIAM founded, directed what and organized. Explain the input of diverse international groups was coordinated to generate propaganda, ideas or policy. o Why Bridgwater? - Explain how they chose Bridgwater instead of New York as a destination in 1947 and how they agreed on the conference themes of: Restating CIAM aims, redefining the organization, Urbanism, Architectural Expression and Architectural Education. Also topical are conversations held about; the relationship between art and architecture, a popular ownership of and appreciation of architecture and the postwar housing crisis. CONVERGENCE AND DIVERGENCE (Exhibit: specially created CIAM timeline to interpret and map migration of ideas, heritage) o What role does CIAM 6 have to play in the history of ideas about art, architecture and urbanism? o The spirit of CIAM was inspired by early 20 th century art, architecture and design movements such as: Russian Constructivisim, Purisim, the Bauhaus, de Stijl. The second world war enforced a journey across Europe into England and often onto America. Explain how heritage migrated, how people and ideas travelled and how ideas changed. o How did the ideas CIAM promoting developed overtime? - While design thinking in the Netherlands moves forward reflexively from CIAM to the present, in the UK and America a perceived break with modernism is eventually precipitated with the failure of some large scale public housing projects symbolized by the collapse of Ronan Point (London, May 1968) or the demolition of Pruitt Igoe (St Louis, USA April 1972). How did CIAM succeed and what was the impact of this perceived failure? CIAM 6 DELEGATES (Exhibit; CIAM 6 Group Photo and crowd research biographies and images. CIAM 6 conference stills form Zurich, The RIBA and Magnum - resituated in the streets and projected in the theatre at Bridgwater Arts Centre) o What are the stories behind the photographs? What relationships between delegates can we observe and what are people s individual stories? What is their role in creating valuable heritage how have they shaped our thinking about everyday spaces, about; housing, kitchens, chairs, cities - etc. o How did women pioneers become influential in 20 th C design? The conference gave an important presence to women who were some of the first women graduates into the design professions. They included; Jane Drew, Helena Syrkus, Lotte Stamm Bess, Minette de 4

5 o o Silva, Jacqeline Trywhitt and Monica Pidgeon. What are their specific contributions? Can crowd researchers fluent in different languages give new interpretation to hidden heritage? Post WWII a veil is being gradually drawn over the elegant iterations of modernisim developed in Poland, Hungary, Russia and Czechloslovakia. And some brilliant designers like Greta Schutte Lihostzky in Austria find themselves out of kilter in postwar western Europe. How do local design cultures reassert themselves in Africa, Asia and the West Indies?- Starting initially in the UK through the work of Drew and Fry, de Silva and de Syllas how do architects make design specific to different cultures and climates? MAKING CIAM (ARTEFACTS) (Exhibits: selected photographs and film of key buildings, furniture, journals, books and other artefacts. On line digital map) o What were the roles of different disciplines; writers, artists, architects, urbanists? Explain how it was where the term urbanisim came into modern parlance and where designers worked collaboratively to speculate on city futures in a new way. Explain why it was a major propaganda instrument for the modern movement in architecture and who the propagandist were. Writers can also be shown to play an important role in curating the identity of CIAM (there were five important writers/journalists at the conference). A famous Magnum photographer happened to be passing through. What are the roles of these different design and creative disciplines? o What are the cities influenced by CIAM like to live in, can we connect with them today? CIAM can be linked to the post war planning of; Brasilia, Chandigarh (recently added to the UNESCO World Heritage list), Rotterdam, Amsterdam and London can crowd researchers connect us to people and places today. CIAM & BRIDGWATER TODAY (Exhibit: A Bridgwater Laboratory - physical and digital models, surveys and maps made by young people. Photographs of CIAM 6 re-enacted). o How do we think about neighbourhoods today? Delegates researched how to identify people s evolving needs and how they could conceptualize the city to meet these needs. They formulated the idea of a neighborhood organized around a school, what are the needs of neighborhoods in Bridgwater today? o How can we envision optimistic urban futures? By re-enacting CIAM 6 to explore change in Bridgwater what can we learn about and contribute to the future? o Can the spirit of CIAM be revisited? - As well as framing and promoting modernist architecture CIAM exemplified ways to; be open to the future, structure collective conversations, share research methods, debate - collaborate, agree and disagree how can we use these skills in digital media today to make spaces. 5
