West Wall Paintings 1 Archbishop Laud (1573-1645) after Sir Anthony Van Dyke Archbishop of Canterbury (from 1633) and close adviser to Charles I. His attempt to anglicise the Scottish church led to his impeachment by the Long Parliament and eventual execution. No family connection. 2 The Reverend John Lucy (1790-1874), English (c. 1856). Rector of Hampton Lucy and Vicar of Charlecote. Younger brother of George Hammond Lucy, he helped rebuild Hampton Lucy Church.

North Wall Paintings 3 The Reverend William Lucy (1673/4-1723) Painted by Jonathan Richardson the elder(1665-1745) Rev. William was Rector of Mampton Lucy and Prebendary of Wells Cathedral and paid 34. 8s for the painting. He married Frances Balguy of Derwent, Derbyshireand succeeded Col. George Lucy as the owner of Charlecote in 1721. He died without issue in 1723 and was succeeded by two nephews, Thomas and George, as he had disinherited his brother Fulke their Father, whom he considered to be improvident. He bought the wrought iron gates for the Gatehouse, re-organised the former library and had the Smith brothers of Warwickshire, Francis and William, build the rectory at Hampton Lucy. He also bought his wife to be a book The Mystery of Phanaticism. 4 Unknown Woman Unknown artist Late 178c English Painting

East Wall Paintings (Great Hall Wall) 5 David Garrick (1717-1779). After Thomas Gainsborough (1727-88) The original by Gainsborough was reworked for the Shakespeare Jubilee masterminded by Garrick in Stratford in 1769. It was destroyed by fire at the museum, Stratford upon Avon in 1947. Garrick was the greatest actor of the 18 th century and is pictured here reclining against a bust of Shakespeare. The Palladian Bridge at Prior Park, Bath (NT) is in the background 6 Thomas Coventry, (1578-1640), by Cornelius Johnson. As Lord Keeper of the Seal he presented Charles I s views to Parliament and gave advice on aspects of the law. He was unjustly accused of bribery but unlike other supporters of Charles I he died peacefully in his bed. This painting was given by him to Sir Thomas Lucy III. The Lucy s and the Coventry s appear to have been friends over many generations. Anne Coventry, wife of the 6 th Earl, was a friend of Bachelor George and it was she who recommended Mrs Philippa Hayes as his housekeeper in 1744.
