2 The Battle Family from 1745 Samuel is the earliest known member of the Battle family. It is believed that Samuel was born in Pettistree, around He married Bridget Kettle on 9 th October 1766 in Pettistree, It appears that they lived all their married lives in the same village. They had at least five children, four sons and one daughter. Children of Samuel and Bridget. Samuel was their first child, born on 19 th June Nothing more is known about his life but it is possible that he died in Eyke, Suffolk, in 1849 aged 81 years. A Samuel Battle was recorded on William, their second child was born on 6 th August 1770 in Pettistree. It is possible that he died in 1840 aged 70 years. John, their third son was born on 7 th June Elizabeth, their only daughter, was born on 18 th June Robert, Samuel and Bridget s last child was born in He married Lucy Barber on 24 th July in 1805 at Campsea Ashe Church. Samuel died on 1 st February 1788 in Pettistree, aged 43 years. It is thought that Bridget died in 1782 but the date has not been verified. 2
3 Robert Battle, born Robert Battle was the son of Samuel and Bridget. He was born in Pettistree. He married Lucy Barber at Campsea Ashe on 24 th July They had 10/11 children. Mary, born 1805 Mary was their first child born on 29 th June It appears from these dates that Mary was born out of wedlock around a month before her parents were married. (See later notes.) Robert, born 1807 Robert their first son was born on 9 th September He married Lucy Runacles ( ) (See later notes) Elizabeth, born 1809 Elizabeth was born in No further information. Eliza, born 1811 Eliza was born in 1811 in Campsea Ashe. Henry, born 1818/19 Henry, their second son was born 1818/19. He was baptised on 17 th January 1819 at Campsea Ashe. He married Eliza Clarke ( ), born in Dallinghoo, Suffolk in Henry and Eliza lived in Hacheston and Wickham Market and they had 9 /10 children. In 1841, Henry and Eliza were living in Hacheston and ten years later, the family were living in Wickham Market. Henry was 32 and Eliza had three children, Sarah, born 1841, Henry, born 1843 and Charles born In 1861, Henry and Eliza were living with their five children in Bottle and Glass Lane, Hacheston. These children were Mary Ann born 1847, Allen born 1849, Arthur born 1853, Frances born 1850, Lewis born 1852 and Mary Ann born By 1871, they were still living in Bottle and Glass lane with three of their children. They had one more child Agnes, born Arthur Battle, born 1853, son of Henry and Eliza, nee Clarke Arthur, born 1853, was the fourth son of Henry and Eliza. He married Sarah Spall in Arthur and Sarah had four children, Mabel, born 1876, Frances, born 1880, Lewis, born 1882 and Mabbie, born Arthur, Sarah and their family lived at Bridge Farm Cottage, Hacheston. Sarah fostered children from Whitechapel Workhouse, including the Evan brothers. 3
4 William, born 1821 William was born in Campsea Ashe in 1821 (1819?) He married Hannah Knights on 14 th July 1841 in the village. Hannah was born in 1821, the daughter of William and Rachel Knights, nee Crane. William and Hannah had nine children. They lived all their lives in Campsea Ashe. Sadly two of their children died at a young age, Rachel, born 1851, died in 1858 and Louisa, born 1862, died the same year. They were both buried in Campsea Ashe Churchyard. William and Hannah s children were, Lucy born 1842, Nathan born 1849 and Rachel born Their next child was Tamor, born followed by another daughter Alice, in Their son Henry William was born in 1859 and Rachel was born in Their next child was Louisa was born in April She married Charles Robert Powell in Tendering,Essex. They had a daughter born Sadly, both Louisa and the baby died in Their last child was Sarah, born Nathan, William and Hannah eldest son, married Lucy and they had two sons, William G. born 1882 and Alfred. They moved to St. Pancreas, Middlesex. Edward, born 1823 Edward was born in 1823, lived his early life in Campsea Ashe. He married Harriet Leek, born Hacheston. (See later notes) Ephraim, born 1825 Ephraim was Robert and Lucy s next child. He was born in 1825 in Campsea Ashe. He married Mary I. Smith, born Capel St Andrew. It is possible that she had been married previously and had a son James Smith, born 1829 in Hollesley. Ephraim and Mary married on 21 st August James lived with Ephraim and Mary. They had four children of their own. William was the eldest, born 1846 and Jane was their first daughter, born Their third child was Ephriam was born in 1850 but died in an accident when a steam engine exploded. He was only 13 years old. He was buried in Campsea Ashe Churchyard. Their last child was Eliza, born in Edmond, born 1827 Edmond was born on 23 rd December 1827 in Campsea Ashe. He married Rebecca Mary Davy. Edmund, Rebecca and three of their children emigrated to Australia. They sailed on the ship the Java. There is a record of the death of their daughter, Sarah in August 1851 who died en route. Ephraim born in 1849 and Eliza born 23 rd May 1851 survived the journey. They arrived at Botany Bay on 24 th or 27 th April They paid 3 for their ticket. They settled in New South Wales and lived in a town called Kempsey. Edmund and Rebecca had eight more children. 5 Lucy was born in She died in December 1843, aged 18 years. Harriet, born 1828 Harriett was Robert and Lucy s last child. She was born in It seems that Harriett had a child William before she married. She married William Hearn in July 1854 in Campsea Ashe.and they had one daughter, Lucy. After the death of her husband, Harriet married John Everest Harris and they had three daughters. She died in
6 The Story of Mary Battle, born 1805, daughter of Robert and Lucy Mary was born on 29 th June 1805 in Campsea Ashe. She had a son Edmund, born 1827 in Campsea Ashe. Mary was not married at the time. The reputed father was George Self. Mary would have been 22 years. It appears that Edmond lived his early life in the village. There are some records that finds Mary Battle married the Robert Mayhew in They were living in Kettleborough, Suffolk. And they had four children. The Story of Edward Battle, born 1827, son of Robert and Lucy Edward, born 1823, lived his early life in Campsea Ashe. He married Harriett Leek, ( ) born Hacheston on 15 th August 1842 in Campsea Ashe. In 1851, Edward and Harriet with their children were in the Union Workhouse, Wickham Market. It seems the family had fallen on hard times. Edward was 28, Harriet, 27 and their children, Harriet, aged 8, Alfred aged 7, George aged 4, Emma aged 2 and little Arthur 11 months were in the workhouse for sometime but exactly how long is not known. By 1861, life had improved and the family were living at Fowl s Watering, Wickham Market. Edward 37 and Harriet 36 were living with their children, Harriet aged 18, a general servant. Alfred, aged 16 was an agricultural labourer. Arthur, aged 10, Walter aged 5, Alice aged 3 and Elizabeth just 2 months old. Emma was not living with the family. Young George sadly died in January Edward and Harriett had three more children, George was 1861, Mark born 1864 and Louis, born Edward died in December 1901 and Harriett died in April The Story of Alfred Battle, born 1844 Alfred was the eldest son of Edward and Harriet Battle was born in Campsea Ashe. By 1871, he was married to Louisa and Alfred was a farm labourer. They had one daughter Emma, born They were living in Sutton, Suffolk. In 1881, Alfred was living with his two daughters, Emma and Alice C. in Chelmondiston, Suffolk, but Louisa was not recorded as living with them. By 1891, Alfred was now married to Hannah, with four children, George 11, Ernest 9, Bertie, 7 and May 11. In 1901, Alfred and Hannah were living in Wilmington, Sussex but by 1911, Alfred was again widowed, aged 66 and working on a farm in Hellingly, Sussex, with Bertie, aged 27 and May, aged 20, housekeeper. Walter, son of Edward and Hannah, born 1856 married Mary Ann Dyball. George, Walter s brother, married Elizabeth Osbourne. George and Elizabeth had six children, Martha born 1883, died 1972, Ernest born 1885, Floyd O. G. born 1888, died 1910, Osbourne born 1891, Nona Emily born 1895 and Emily C. born George, Elizabeth and their family lived at Daisy Farm, Campsea Ashe. Mark, younger brother of George married Emma Thornton. Louis, the youngest brother married Ann Goldsmith. 6
7 The Story of Robert Battle, born 1807 son of Robert and Lucy Barber Robert was born on 9 th September 1807 in Campsea Ashe. He married Lucy Runacles, 1807 around They lived in Campsea Ashe and had six children. Their eldest child was Henry, born Their second son was Ephraim, born Robert and Lucy s first daughter was Lucy, born two years later in John R. was their next child born 1841, followed by William born in Their last child was Mary, born in Robert died in 1891 and Lucy died in Henry, eldest son of Robert and Lucy nee Runacles In 1851, Henry was living in Campsea Ashe. In 1851 Henry was recorded on a vessel in Kent. Henry married Sarah (Meadows) Youngman and by 1871, they were living in St George s Hanover Square, London with two children, Alfred H. and Alice, born Henry and Sarah had three more children, Charles William, born 1874, Maud D and Sarah Ann born The family continued to live in St George s Square until 1911 when they were living in Fulham, London. Ephraim, born 1839, son of Robert and Lucy, nee Runacles Ephraim married Harriett Cady on 4 th February Harriet was born in 1839 in Wicjham Market. They had twelve children, eight sons and four daughters. Their children were William born 1863, John born 1865, Edith born 1867, James born 1870, Henry born 1874, Emma born 1876, Walter born 1879, Eliza born 1881, Allen born 1883, Alfred born 1884, Arthur born 1887 and Laura born Their son, Henry, born 1874, married Mary Ann Hammond in They lived at Daisy Farm, Campsea Ashe. They did not have children of their own but boarded a boy from the Whitechapel Workhouse. John Runacles Battle, born 1843, son of Robert and Lucy married Emma Benham. They had ten children and moved to Yoxford, Suffolk. William, born 1846, son of Robert and Lucy, was born in Wickham Market but was baptised at Campsea Ashe on 6 th June He married Rebecca Searles and they had a son George, born The family moved to Peckham, London.
