CALL TO ORDER/INTRODUCTIONS Chair Morgan-Hampton called the meeting to order at 6:10pm. Self-introduction of those in attendance took place. II. COMMUNITY COMMENTS There was no public comment. III. APPROVAL OF MINUTES Commissioner Haderlein seconded Commissioner Dent s motion to approve the minutes of October 17, 2012. The motion carried 7-0; Ayala, Haderlein absent. IV. COMMUNICATIONS Letters or articles regarding library services or events. Staff circulated newspaper articles from Pasadena Independent, Pasadena Now and Pasadena Star-News announcing the book title Age of Miracles by Karen Thompson Walker for Pasadena s 2013 One City, One Story program. V. LIBRARY REPORTS a. Central Library Report Head of Central, Martha Camacho Martha reported on the changes developing at Central Library. Reference collection will be relocated to the Humanities Wing. The Law Collection will remain in the Business Wing. To make the mystery collection more browsable, the mystery collection has been relocated to the Reference/Business Wing adjacent to the Large Type collection. Staff will also focus on repurposing the old copy center and old Teen Central off the main hall. Additionally, we are making changes to staff space. The public service staff will move together to the basement at the east end of the building. The public service managers will move into offices next door to the public service staff. This move will encourage staff to share knowledge and resources. No Action Taken. VI. DIRECTOR S REPORT a. Report on Taipei s International Library Conference Director Sanders reported on her visit to Taipei Public Library as a guest speaker and presented a slideshow of the conference and the library. No Action Taken. b. 2013 One City, One Story Report Director Sanders reported on the One City, One Story book announcement held on November 5 at Central Library in the courtyard. The book selection for Pasadena s eleventh annual community reading celebration is The Age of Miracles by author Karen Thompson. No Action Taken. c. Update on Deputy Director Position Director Sanders reported that we have not filled the deputy director position. We are

Comments on State Library of California Situation and Impact Director Sanders reported that State Librarian Stacey Aldrich has taken a position as Deputy Secretary for the Office of Commonwealth Libraries in Pennsylvania. Gerry McGinnity is the Acting California State Librarian. No Action Taken. VII. COMMISSION INPUT Report on California Library Association Conference Commissioner Bluestone Commissioner Bluestone reported on sessions and workshops she attended at the California Library Conference on November 1 in San Jose. The theme of the conference this year was Defying Gravity. Commissioner Bluestone provided information on programs such as Book-to- Action, Digital Repositories and Open Access, Digital Archives, Book-in-a-box, Makerspace, Play and Learn Islands, and Michael Stephens presentation on the Transformative Power of Hyperlinked Libraries. Attached is a list of links for the commissioners to access and review. No Action Taken. VIII. REPORT(S) FROM COMMITTEES/REPRESENTATIVES Library Friends/Associates Hastings Associates No report given. La Pintoresca Branch Commissioner Martinez reported that Tom Kenny, the voice of Nickelodeon s SpongeBob SquarePants and his band would perform at La Pintoresca s tree lighting on Friday, December 14. Commissioner Martinez reported that Villa Parke and La Pintoresca would have their first associates meeting in January. No Action Taken Linda Vista Associates - No report given. San Rafael Associates No report given. IX. ANNOUNCEMENTS a. Commissioner Martinez announced that Latino Arts Network will collaborate with Latino Heritage, and Pasadena Cultural Affairs Division to present an evening of poetry and reading with California Poet Laureate, Juan Felipe Herrera in spring 2013. Moved from four highly silo-ed divisions (IT, Branches, Main, Collections Management) to two collaborating groups: public services (facing out) and support services (making it all possible). b. Provided extensive cross-training to facilitate staff s ability and efficiency at any assigned location. c. Moved from subject specialized customer service desks to single point of customer interaction: one stop. II. Promotion of library/community interaction a. Participated in over 50 community events, fairs, meetings, collaborations, and parades. b. Assumed maintenance, use and continuation of county law library relocated from courthouse to library. c. HAPPENINGS The Official Newsletter of the Department of Public Works ISSUE 85 September/October 2012 SMIWM MOURNS It is with a heavy heart we announce the passing of Avril Mar n. Mr. Mar n was a Solid Waste Truck Operator in SMIWM. He passed away on October 11 of an apparent heart a ack. Avril loved working for the City and seemed to have a permanent smile. He never complained about his work and would end each work assignment conversa on with I love my job. Avril is survived by his son, Avril Mar n Jr. Siobhan Foster Projects, Projects, Projects This is an exci ng me for the department as a number of significant capital projects are underway. Construc on is currently underway on the $550,000 Pedestrian Access Improvements on Sierra Madre Villa Avenue between Colorado Boulevard and the Sierra Madre Villa Light Rail Sta on project. This project will create a more pedestrian friendly and walkable experience by widening the exis ng sidewalk, construc ng access ramps, enhancing pedestrian ligh ng, streetscape and landscape, and adding a future Public Art element. Meet the Crew Paint Crew From the Director On October 22, construc on began on the $1.5 million Lincoln Avenue Improvement project from Forest Avenue to the north City limit. The street and streetscape improvements will enhance the corridor for pedestrians, transit, vehicles, and bicyclists. Improvements also include rubberized asphalt overlay of concrete pavement, removal and replacement of damaged concrete including curb, gu er, sidewalk, and cross gu ers. Construc on of curb ramps is also included to enhance pedestrian access. A $50,000 project to reno- vate the so ball field at Brenner Park also commenced this month. The project includes enhancements to the irriga on system and to the infield and ou ield turf areas, laser grading of the infield, removal of lip between infield and ou ield areas, redefini on of edges of infield area, impor ng and leveling ou ield soil, and pulverizing exis ng ou ield turf and re-seeding the field. The installa on of new playground equipment at San Rafael Park started on October 15. The $55,000 project will replace the exis ng swings with a larger unit to allow for more simultaneous use and the addi on of new stand-alone playground equipment. The playground enhancements will provide addi onal play opportuni es for 5 to 12 year old children while maintaining the exis ng opportuni es for younger children. Forthcoming projects also include a $450,000 slurry seal project for 18 miles of City streets and a $1.28 million project to resurface 24 street segments throughout the City. I would like to thank all the staff members who are responsible for bringing these projects to frui on. This includes engineering staff who design the projects, the construc on inspec on personnel who manage construc on, and the administra ve support professionals who help prepare and process the projects. Page 2 Paint Crew Continued Ever wondered who keeps our City buildings camera-ready? No need to wonder any longer. Meet the Paint Crew. The Paint Crew is responsible for preserving, maintaining, and enhancing the City s 53 major buildings and approximately 130 facili es, many of which are historical. These historical buildings are what make working in the paint shop exci ng and challenging. One of the crew s most memorable projects was the recent rehabilita on and beau fica on of Santa Catalina Library. The crew painted the exterior and interior of the historical landmark located on the corner of Washington Boulevard and Catalina Avenue. Beyond aesthe cally enhancing the building, the challenge was to maintain the historical integrity of the library while Before adding a new contemporary color scheme. Work included upgrading outdated oil-based finishes with new low and zero vola- le organic compound (VOC) materials, which are be er for the environment, restoring the exis ng acous c ceiling with illumina ng hues for be er ligh ng throughout the main library, and restoring the bay windows, metal foyer and doors. Working on the library interior was par cularly rewarding for Robert Marquez, who...thought the job was challenging with its high walls, acous c ceiling and detailed cornice work, but the end result was impressive and it was rewarding to look at the finished work and feel a sense of accomplishment. For Jesse Childs it was exci ng to see a monotone flat paint surface come to life with several contras ng colors in semi-gloss and gloss finishes. It was a very detailed and work-intensive project but using color to bring out all the beau ful detail in the architecture brought the building alive. These feelings were echoed by library staff members who were excited to come back into such a beau ful work environment. A er The Paint Crew would like to encourage everyone to go and visit the Santa Catalina Library and enjoy it for yourselves. BSFMD News On August 6, Has ngs Library closed its doors to begin a par al remodel of the interior of the building. Carpenters, painters, plumbers and electrical staff worked hard to complete the job quickly to ensure the library was closed for as li le me as possible. Work performed included saw-cu ng the floors and opening walls to accommodate new electrical and computer data lines. Ceilings, walls and the en re story room received a fresh coat of paint. The staff office was remodeled to allow for an addi onal staff desk and new cabinets and a sink were installed in the break room. A storage closet was remodeled and new lockers were installed for staff use. The library officially re-opened on September 24 th. Great job everyone!
