St. Barbara First Graders Share God s Love St. Barbara Elementary school First Graders recently created lovely cards for those in need: the family of a classmate who lost his grandfather, a friend in the hospital and many for our pastor, Father Ziomek to deliver to the homebound and sick. They also are "earning" books to donate to those less fortunate by their acts of kindness and good behavior in class. When the class earns 10 tally marks, a student selects another book to donate to the Little Free Library Box. This box is located across from a food bank where adults and children may enjoy the opportunity to select a free book. THE MAN WHO ADVERTISES HIS BUSINESS HAS ONE St. Gabriel Youth Group Volunteers At The Greater Chicago Food Depository On Saturday, January 26th, members of the St. Gabriel Youth Group volunteered for a "food repacking" session at the Greater Chicago Food Depository warehouse. The large building (which is two blocks long) stores donated food items that will be distributed to food pantries and organizations that feed the hungry. Our task that day was to take donated rice from very large containers and put it into 3 lb. bags that will be given to the needy. Over three hours, our group took thousands of pounds of rice and carefully put them in the bags. The entire group was amazed by how much donated food is stored in the warehouse and felt good that we were helping to address the needs of the hungry in Chicago. Our next event will be a trip to visit patients at the Veterans Hospital on Saturday, Feb 23rd. If anyone is interested in joining our Christian service-minded group, please contact Fr. Rich, the moderator, at 773-268-9595. WEDNESDAY, January 30th, 2013 To Place Your Ad Call: THE MAN WHO ADVERTISES HIS BUSINESS HAS ONE BRIDGEPORT NEWS - Page 3 GREETING AD DEADLINE IS MONDAY AT 5PM What counts in any system is the intelligence, self-control, conscience, SPECIALS St. Rita All School Mass Honors, Celebrates and Remembers Seven hundred plus students and faculty of St. Rita High School filed into the chapel Wednesday morning for their monthly all-school mass. While each mass celebrates their patronage to St. Rita and St. Augustine, each mass also ends with celebrating the students. Principal Brendan Conroy announces the latest scholarship recipients, gives athletic updates and awards four students as Mustangs of the Month. This tradition continued Wednesday, but much more was added to the agenda. Lorenzo Henrichs, Brandon Jenkins and Nick Henrichs. First, the Jasica award winners were announced. The Joseph J. Jasica, Jr. Award is an art scholarship named after the late Joseph J. Jasica, Jr. a 1953 graduate of St. Rita High School. This award is open to all students who then present their piece of artwork to the committee to be voted upon. The art can involve watercolors, oils, acrylics, mixed media (colored pencil + watercolor, pastels and pencils), pencil, or photography. The winners of this years contest were Nicolas Henrichs, Lorenzo Henrichs and Brendan Jenkins. Nicholas and Lorenzo both received a $500.00 scholarship while Brendan received a $200 scholarship. It has been over two months since St. Rita High School and the city of Chicago lost one of its finest, Chicago Fire Department Captain Herbie Johnson 76. Captain Johnson left an indelible mark on everyone he came in contact with and because of that, one student at St. Rita did his part to give back to the Johnson family. Posing before Fireman mural are Sue Johnson, Chris Wanat, Sandy Wanat. Chris Wanat, a junior football player, heard about the passing of Captain Johnson at their home football game and immediately thought of the family he left behind. Chris mother works at RN Sports and Chris came up with the idea to create t-shirts in honor of Captain Johnson to be sold with the proceeds going directly to the family. The efforts of Wanat were astounding and at the end of the mass, with great honor he handed a check to Herbie Johnson s wife, Sue, for $4,000. While Chris knows the money won t change any lives, he hopes the Johnson family takes some consolation knowing the entire community rallied behind the effort in remembering Herbie. At the conclusion of mass, all the members of the student body plus the faculty and staff went back to the classroom to watch a very special video. It was a video of St. Rita English teacher, Tim Baffoe, reading a letter he wrote to the Beverly Review about the passing of Herbie Johnson. This was just one more way the St. Rita community honored a true hero and a true Ritaman.
