(1835) LEONARD CHASE (B. 1810) Shadrach 1 Hapgood (c1642-1675) and Elizabeth (Treadway) Hapgood (b. 1646) SHADRACH 1 HAPGOOD was born in Andover, Hampshire, England, about 1642, the son of THOMAS A and JOANE (SCULLARD) HAPGOOD. 1 At the age of 14, he came to New England in 1656 as a passenger on the Speedwell. 2 Upon arriving in New England, he went to live with his kinsman Peter Noyes in Sudbury, Mass. 3 ELIZABETH 2 TREADWAY (NATHANIEL1) was born in 1646, probably on April 3 in Watertown, Mass. 4 Shadrach Hapgood married Elizabeth Treadway on 21 Oct 1664. 5 They settled in Sudbury. In 1669, Shadrach Hapgood joined with 11 other men from Concord, Sudbury, and Chelmsford to petition the General Court for a grant of land in the area that became the town of Stow in 1683. It appears that this request was granted and that the proprietors began to improve the tract shortly thereafter. 6 Shadrach was not to have the opportunity to enjoy his property in Stow, however. On 2 Aug 1675, during King Philip s War, Shadrach Hapgood was with a group of about 20 mounted militia men under the command of Captains Hutchinson and Wheeler. They fell into an Indian ambush near Brookfield, Mass. Shadrach was one of 11 members of the company either killed or mortally wounded. 7 His widow Elizabeth was appointed to administer the estate. 8 His inventory was initially appraised at 145.2s on 2 Sep 1675. 9 The following month, however, Elizabeth presented a new inventory, valued at 106.11s, saying that the difference was due to the burning of a house by the enemy. 10 Elizabeth Hapgood married, as her second husband and his second wife, Joseph Hayward of Concord, Mass. on 23 Mar 1676/77 in Concord. 11 Joseph Hayward was born on 26 Mar 1643/44 in Concord, the son of George and Mary Hayward. 12 He married Hannah Hosmer on 26 Oct 1665. 13 Hannah died 15 Dec 1675. 14 Elizabeth (Treadway) (Hapgood) Hayward died by 1699. 15 Joseph died in Concord on 13 Oct 1714. 16 Shadrach and Elizabeth (Treadway) Hapgood had the following children, all born in Sudbury: i.
