James Anderson Jarrell, Sr. By Gracie Stover James Anderson Jarrell, Sr., appears in the Marshfork District of Raleigh County in the 1850 census. He was the son of Lemuel C. Jarrell and Elizabeth Farley. He was born September 12, 1814, and died at Packsville, Raleigh County, on January 31, 1897. He married first Martha Araminta Pettry on September 28, 1837, in Fayette County. She was born January 22, 1821, in Fayette County, and was the daughter of Jacob Pettry and Celia Gore. She died in Packsville March 29, 1883. James Anderson Jarrel, Sr., married second Mary Lafferty on August 30, 1883, in Raleigh County. James and Martha had children. They were Elizabeth, Paulina, Celia, William, Virginia, James, Jacob, Lemuel, John, Eliza, George, and Harriett. 1. Elizabeth Jarrell was born August 1, 1838, and was married to Lewis Humphrey, son of William Humphrey and Mary Jarrell. 2. Paulina Ann Jarrell was born August 25, 1840, at Horse Creek, Raleigh County, and died in 1901. She married Floyd J. Williams about 1863. Floyd was a son of Lewis Williams and Catherine Scarboro. Their children were James, George, Jacob, Andrew, John, Joseph, Robert, Charles, Jefferson, Frank, and Jesse. -1 James Lewis Buzz Williams was born in June 1864. He married Aletha Toney on February 7, 1888. She was the daughter of James Andrew Toney and Nancy A. Pettry. Their children were Nora, Ollie, Jesse, Ada Belle, George, Earl, Emma, and Rena. -Nora Williams was born in August 1889. She married Sole Stover. He was the son of John Ward Stover and Louise Toney. He was born March 22, 1862, and died in 1954. Their children were Dale, Marie, Lonnie, and Fred. -Jessie Williams married Bernie Wills. -Ada Belle Williams married Grady Underwood. He was born March 20, 1893, at Rock Creek, Raleigh County, and died February 11, 1963. His parents were Jehue Underwood and Martha Lucretia Scarboro. Their children were Homer, Enola, Martha Jane, and Mary Josephine. -Emma Williams married William Asher Stover. His parents were Elijah Calvin Stover and Mary Ann Clay. Their children were Calvin James, Barbara, Fletcher, Donald, Ronald, Betty, Jeanette, and Billy. -Rena Opal Williams was born June 22, 1907, in Raleigh County, and died February 10, 2002. She married Ernest Johnson. Their children were Edgar, Douglas, Marcella, James, Betty, Opal, Anna, Dreama, and Jack. -2 George Thomas Williams was born May 1867, in Fayette County, and died June 17, 1954, in Raleigh County. He married Louisa Farley on May 19, 1893, in Mercer County. Her parents were William Louden Farley and Mary Ann Miller. Their children were Lillie, Walter Lee, Doma, Clayton, Pliny, and Ernest.

He was born November 1, 1894, at Rock Creek, Raleigh County, and died April 5, 1966. Their children were Elsie Jane and Delbert. -Walter Lee Williams was born November 15, 1894, at Jarrold s Valley, Raleigh County and died December 14, 1974, at Horse Creek, Raleigh County. He married Alberta Cook, who was a daughter of Floyd Cook and Minerva Richmond. Their children were Edna, Doma, Selma, Maxine, Sylvia, and Paul. -Doma Williams was born December 1895, and died February 23, 1987. She married Andrew Jackson Richmond, son of John William Richmond and Julie Ann Cantley. Andrew was born June 9, 1896, and died March 24, 1977. -Clayton Homer Williams was born March 28, 1899, in Horse Creek, Raleigh County and died February 9, 1978. He married Bensie Marie Gunnoe. -3 Jacob Williams was born about 1868 and died before 1870. -4 Andrew Jackson Williams was born January 1, 1873, and died October 26, 1951, in Charleston, Kanawha County. He married Deanie Raines, daughter of Rufus Garland Raines and Sarah Jane Rumburg, on May 2, 1906, in Raleigh County. Deanie was born in April 1892, and died October 9, 1976, in Beckley, Raleigh County. Their children were Arthur, Artie, Mollie, Roy, Garcia, Sarah Jane, Wilson, Harvey, Virginia, Harry, Clyde, and Floyd. -Arthur Williams was born February 20, 1907, in Raleigh County, and he married Sylvia Collins. -Mollie Williams was born October 4, 1912, in Raleigh County and died December 19, 1995. She married William Henry Walker. -Garcia Williams was born August 28, 1915, in Raleigh County, and he married Freda. Their children were Thomas, Jerry, James, and Patricia. -5 John Morris Williams was born April 14, 1871, in Colcord, Raleigh County, and died June 3, 1946. He married Othea Otis Kuhn, daughter of Esau Kuhn and Nancy Margaret Jarrell. Their children were Launa, Nettie, and Joseph. -Launa Agnes Williams was born April 28, 1898, in Raleigh County, and died April 21 1978. She was married to Garrett Hobart Bradford. Their children were Ofice, Juanita, Garrett, Albert, John W, Alta, Earl, and Agnes. -Nettie Mae Williams was born November 23, 1899, at Jarrold s Valley, and died at Rock Creek, Raleigh County, on November 26, 1982. She married Linville Christopher Cantley, son of James Henry Cantley and Mary Francis Allen. He was born December 25, 1897, at Price Creek, and died December 3, 1963, at Rock Creek, Raleigh County. Their children were Clyde, Eugene, Jerry, Estelle, and Margaret. -6 Joseph Nelson Williams, born May 24, 1900, died December 16, 1947. He married Stollie Jarrell. She was the daughter of Marshall Lewis Jarrell and Laura B. Jarrell. Their children were Doris, Charlotte, Bonnie, Joseph, and Shelby. 2
-7 Robert Lee Williams was born on August 1, 1877, at Jarrold s Valley, Raleigh County, and died February 22, 1967, at Rock Creek, Raleigh County. He married Laura Belle Massey on December 21, 1899. Laure Belle Massey was born February 20, 1882, in Rock Creek, Raleigh County, and died June 13, 1952. Her parents were George William Massey and Lydia Rosabelle Acord. Robert and Laura s children were Essie, Donnie, Esther, Orville, and Tracy. -Essie Agnes Williams was born March 14, 1905, at Rock Creek, and died January 17, 1983. She married Azel Jake Farley on January 20, 1923. His parents were Floyd M. Farley and Nancy Etta Jarrell. Azel was born October 9, 1900, at Horse Creek, Raleigh County, and died February 2, 1992. Their children were Louise, Mildred, Patsy, Peggy, Azel, Adolph, Teddy, and James. -Donnie Marie Williams was born September 20, 1911, and married Clarence Wills, a son of James Monroe Wills and Hila Ann Price. Their children were Robert, John, Joann, Eugene, and James. -Esther Williams, born September 16, 1913, married Albert Eskew. Albert was the son of Marion Freer Eskew and Sarah Virginia Jarrell. -Orville Burton Williams was born on December 8, 1900, at Rock Creek, and died June 24, 1969. He married Ada Florence Farley, daughter of Floyd M. Farley and Nancy Etta Jarrell. She was born November 4, 1898, at Horse Creek, and died April 21, 1981. -Tracy Avel Williams was born July 25, 1902, at Rock Creek, and died February 19, 1973. He married Wavie Gay Scarboro, daughter of Thomas Byron Scarboro and Florence Belle Cantley. -8 Charles Logan Williams was born January 8, 1876, in Colcord, Raleigh County, and died December 11, 1958. He married Sarah Louisa Webb on September 28, 1904. Her parents were Andrew Wilson Webb and Annie Webb. She was born September 10, 1884, and died December 23, 1955. Their children were Icie Marie, Lee Roy, Elsie Gay, Donnie, Tressie, Farnie, and Tracy. -Icie Marie Williams was born February 21, 1906, in Boone County, and died February 11, 2000. She married George Dewey Pettry on December 24, 1924, at Pettus, Raleigh County. Dewey was born January 15, 1899, and Dry Creek, Raleigh County, and died July 14, 1978. He and Icie lived at Packsville, Raleigh County, and owned the general store and post office. Nancy was born June 18, 1851, and her parents were Jesse Daniel and Sarah Moore. William married second Josephine Farley on June 19, 1892, in Raleigh County. Her parents were William Louden Farley and Mary Ann Miller. Josephine was born October 2, 1875, in Mercer County, and died December 5, 1964, in Raleigh County. William married third Mae Thompson on January 1, 1895, in Raleigh County. William married fourth Rosa Mullens on August 24, 1904, in Fayette County. 5. Virginia Jarrell was born October 23, 1849, and married John M. Williams on December 22, 1871. John was the son of Lewis Williams and Catherine Scarboro. She also married John Holstein, the son of David Holstein and Elizabeth Ann Smith, on August 9, 1874, in Raleigh County. He was born March 1847 in Raleigh County. Her third marriage was to John Griffin Canterbury. 6. James Anderson Jarrell was born January 3, 1852, in Dry Creek, Raleigh County, and died December 24, 1887. He married Louisa Cathline Malinda Ann Hazeltine Dickens on December 11, 1869, in Raleigh County. She was the daughter of Isaac Dickens and Elizabeth Lafferty. She was born November 5, 1850, at Dry Creek, Raleigh County, and died August 3, 1936. Their children were Joseph, William, Jacob, Pauline, Martha Dora, James Alfred, Wood, Sarah, and Lillie. -1 Joseph Nelson Jarrell was born October 27, 1870, in Raleigh County, and died December 29, 1845. He married Utaka Snooks McGinnis on February 16, 1893, in Raleigh County. She was born February 18, 1874, in Arnett, Raleigh County, and died February 6, 1967. She was the daughter of James Pyrrhus McGinnis and Mariah Louise Wills. Their children were Ethel, Luther, Martha, Bessie, Chloe, Robert, Clara, Roy, Beulah, and Jo Ella. Jarrell was born May 31, 1862, in Raleigh County, and died September 7, 1941. He married Hester Luane Peters on November 26, 1909. Hester was a daughter of Jonathan Peters and Catherine Dickens.
