(Reference National Library of NZ Papers past website Press newspaper 08 March 1870 page 2) Press newspaper 03 August 1872 Disorderly House - Frances Giles was charged on the information of John Thomson with keeping a disorderly house at Oxford. He stated he was a neighbour of hers and that her house was frequented by men at all hours that the frequently heard very offensive language used and drinking and dancing going on which was a great annoyance to him and the neighbours. Enoch Cole corroborated this statement as did also Richard Morris who said he had occasion to go there in company with another man for his son William to take him home, that he heard dancing and great noise and saw a man go with two buckets of beer to the house that his son did not go with him at that time, and he subsequently returned and saw men with coats off and sleeves turned up as if going to fight. The place was a nuisance to him and the neighbours. In reply to the Bench Sergeant Muller stated that this woman's husband left her about a year ago and since then she kept by repute a house of ill-fame but that he never knew the woman to conduct herself disorderly in the streets. Accused in defence said there was a drunken man at her house on one occasion but she could not get him out and as to Morris's statement it was he and his wife who abused and called her insulting names at her own house. Mr Woodfield who was called stated that accused received some money from time to time from a person who wrote to her. The Bench cautioned her as to her conduct and gave her one month to clear out of the place she now occupies. This is the document marked A annexed election by me dated the December 1950. (Reference National Archive of NZ Christchurch Office CH 171 CH 29369/1950) The Oxford Museum in New Zealand has a photograph of William MORRIS in working gear holding a squeezebox melodeon. I have a photocopy of this photograph. William MORRIS was also known as Schubert MORRIS. A photograph containing four generations of the male MORRIS family can be found opposite page 186 of the publication A Sock in my Stew by Robin S PATTERSON. The four generations are William MORRIS, his son William MORRIS, his grandson Charlie MORRIS and his great grandson Hugh MORRIS. There are also other photographs of the MORRIS descendants on the same page and throughout the publication. Memories from Great Grandson Ray Ivory His name was Bill MORRIS but he was called Schubert. He was married twice. His first wife was called Grandma MORRIS and his second wife was called Granny MORRIS. I remember him as an old man, sitting on a chair near his gate, his hat over his eyes, always chewing nuts or lollies, enjoying the sun. He mostly had his eyes closed against the light. I would ride past on my bike and call out, Good morning Great granddad! And he would reply, G day! Who are you? He wouldn t even open his eyes to see who I was. The story told about him was that he quit work when he was 50. He either had a row or someone had teased him over the number of children he had (12) - I don t know, but he downed tools one day and declared that he would never work again; and he lived till he was 91. (It has been suggested that he was injured in an accident, felling trees.) He never did another tap of work in his life. Old Granny would cut the wood and do all the jobs. What s more, she used to go out and work, while he stayed home and smoked his pipe all day. It was said of him that he was so lazy that he wouldn t have got out of bed if the house caught fire. But the best story about him was this: Great-grandmother Rose was due to have a baby, and she woke up in the middle of the night with things starting to happen. Bill, she called out, Can you go and get the doctor? Aw, Rose, he said, can t you put it off until the morning? This is true. Another story about Great-granddad Schubert. When he was younger he was some sort of assistance to the local sheriff. It was his job one day to escort a prisoner from Oxford to Christchurch. They set off for Christchurch in a horse and cart. It was a scorching nor -west day, which made for thirsty work. At Woodend, old Schubert felt the pressing need for a cold beer. He pulled up at the Woodend pub, tied the horse to a rail and went in for a drink, leaving the prisoner outside. When he came out, the horse and the cart and the prisoner had all disappeared. He never really lived that one down.
