THE EVEREST ARCHIVE EVE/FAM FAMILY LIFE AND HISTORY 1848-1995 EVE/TRA TRAVEL 1955-1996 EVE/WAR JE'S AND HENRY MILLACHIP'S WARTIME SERVICE 1938-1945 Contains three series COLLECTION Joan Everest 1848-1996 EVE/FAM FAMILY LIFE AND HISTORY 1848-1995 EVE/TRA TRAVEL 1955-1996 EVE/WAR JE'S AND HENRY MILLACHIP'S WARTIME SERVICE 1938-1945 This collection holds mainly family photographs and slides of travel undertaken by Joan Elizabeth Everest [JE]. She was born on 5/9/1916, the only child of Eric H.H. Everest and Kate Elizabeth (Toi) Scott-Miller. Her father's sister was the actress Barbara Everest, and Mount Everest was named after her ancestor Sir George Everest (1790-1866) Surveyor- General of India. JE was also cousin to J.E.B. Hill (MP), their mothers being sisters. Since John Hill and JE shared the same maternal grand-parents, there is some duplication of photographs of relatives in the two collections which UEA holds. On 1/2/51 JE married Henry John Anthony Millachip. Material, mainly photographic, relating to Millachip's service in the Middle East is also included. JE lived in Malaya, Kenya and England. She died in 199-? EVE/FAM/1 Press cuttings and printed ephemera 1917, 1941-1950, 1963-1977, 1990 Contains 12 items being one photograph album of press cuttings on the Everest and Millachip families' histories, John Hill [JE's cousin], and the actress Barbara Everest [JE's aunt]; a 1953 scrapbook containing theatre programmes, and programmes and memorabilia of sporting and general events; and miscellaneous printed ephemera including artwork. EVE/FAM/2 General family photographs 1848-1965 Contains 329 items being miscellaneous loose photographs of JE and her extended family. Most of the photographs can be linked to those displayed in her albums. The earliest photograph is dated 1848, there are others dated 1864 and 1888, most of the others are undated but are mainly about 1880-1940. A few negatives are also included. EVE/FAM/3 Early family photographs 18--? - 192-? Contains six sub files/albums of photographs which contain mainly undated and unidentified photographs. They include life in Malaya. EVE/FAM/4 Family photographs 1925-1929 Contains one sub file/album of family photographs showing life in Kuala Lumpur; and holidays In France, Italy, and Cornwall. EVE/FAM/5 Family photographs 1930-1940 Contains four sub files/albums of photographs. They show camping in Pevensey in 1933; life in Kuala Lumpur; John Hill's visit; JE's visit to Penang and Singapore in 1935; a trip to Malta; and family holidays in Cornwall. EVE/FAM/6 Barbara Everest 1926-1968 Contains 30 items. Barbara Everest (1890-1968) was Joan Everest's Aunt and an actress. Includes portrait photographs of Barbara, photographs of her acting in plays, and a photograph of Gladys Cooper; theatre programmes; letters to Barbara Everest and to JE concerning Barbara; notes and photographs to Barbara from George Bernard Shaw; and a copy of Barbara's will. EVE/FAM/7 Wedding of JE and Henry Millachip 1951 Contains 36 items. JE and Henry John Anthony Millachip were married on 1/2/51 in London. Included is a photograph album and photographs; a service sheet; press announcements; and telegrams congratulating the couple. Linda Hill was one of the flower girls. EVE/FAM/8 Family photographs 1947-195-? Contains four sub files/albums of photographs which show life in Kenya; trips made within Africa; and a trip made to Florence in 1953. EVE/FAM/9 Family photographs 1969-1995 Contains six sub files/albums which predominantly contain family photographs, but also some photographs and postcards of travel. Included is a 1969 trip to New Zealand; Stonehenge; skiing in Europe; Alderney in the English Channel; Italy; Kenya in the 70s; South Africa and India between 1978 and 1981; postcards of Norway and the Far East in the early 80s; southern Africa in 1994 which included the Victoria Falls and Durban; and Denmark in 1995. The golden wedding anniversary of B.G. and M.J. Lloyd-Jones is included from 1976.

EVE/FAM/10 Kenyan slides 1954-1955 Contains 10 sub-files of slides which show Kenya at the time when JE was living there. EVE/FAM/11 Crossways 1961-1981 Contains 25 sub-files of slides which show life in and around Crossways, the home of JE in England. Sub file [EVE/FAM/11/9] includes a slide of the tombstone of George Everest who died in 1966. A photograph of this tombstone is included in [EVE/FAM/1]. EVE/FAM/12 New Zealand family 1969 Contains five sub-files of slides which show family whom JE met whilst she was in New Zealand in 1969. EVE/FAM/13 Fairs and equestrian events 1961-1979 Contains 14 sub-files of slides which show various equestrian meetings and local fairs. Includes trials at Crookham; bought slides of the Spanish Riding School and their Lippizaner horses; dressage at Goodwood, etc. EVE/FAM/14 Pet cats 1987 Contains two sub-files of slides which show JE's pet cats at home. EVE/FAM/15 Watermill Farm, Wenhaston 19--? Contains one sub-file of slides which shows John Hill's Watermill Farm in Wenhaston, Suffolk. John Hill and JE were cousins. Whilst JE was living in Kenya she took a trip around Africa which included South Africa, Mozambique and the Seychelles. When JE visited Mozambique it was known as Lourenço Marques. Also included are press cuttings, printed ephemera, and loose photographs. EVE/WAR/2 JE's wartime service 1938, 1941-1944 Contains two items being a photograph album showing JE and colleagues at Bartholomew's Hospital where she was employed on general duties in 1941. Later, JE was a Private in the Anti-Aircraft Military Transport Company [1st A.A.M.T. Coy A.T.S.] Included are photographs of her and her colleagues; her identification card for mechanical transport drivers; and a ration card. Family photographs of JE's cousins John Hill and Betty Haynes are also included in this album. A 1938 Red Cross first aid certificate belonging to JE is also included. BG 02/05/01
