Lovejoy, Jr., MD in 2006, to the Hospital Archives. The collection was created during research conducted for a biography of Charles A. Janeway published in See MC 7.1 for the photographs in this collection. ACCESS: Most of the collection is unrestricted, except in instances of fragile documents where handling may cause harm. Contact archivist for details. COPYRIGHT: Request for permission to publish material from this collection should be discussed with the hospital archivist. PROCESSING: The collection was processed as part of two internship projects in 2006 and 2007 by students from the Graduate School of Library and Information Science at Simmons College of Boston Massachusetts. Papers and photographs were processed as separate projects. PRESERVATION: The documents in this collection emanate a strong chemical odor. Absorbent archival papers have been added to each box and should be changed periodically. HISTORICAL/BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE: Children's Hospital was founded in 1869 as a 20-bed facility at 9 Rutland Street in Boston's South End neighborhood and became affiliated with Harvard Medical School in Charles A. Janeway was Physician-in-Chief at Children s Hospital from , and was Thomas Morgan Rotch Professor of Pediatrics at Harvard Medical School. Janeway 2

3 was born in 1909 in New York City, attended Yale University and the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. He married Elizabeth Bradley, a social worker, in They had four children: Anne, Elizabeth, Charles, and Barbara. He died in Weston, Massachusetts, in Janeway was the subject of a 2007 biography by Robert J. Haggerty and Frederick H. Lovejoy, Jr., Charles A. Janeway: Pediatrician to the World, published by Harvard University Press. Consult the biography for more information about the life and work of Dr. Janeway. SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE: The papers in this collection constitute a wide range of subjects covered in his biography, from Janeway s work at Children s Hospital, to his professional and personal travels, to family and friends. All papers were compiled by Robert J. Haggerty and Frederick H. Lovejoy, Jr. as part of the research for their 2007 biography of Charles A. Janeway titled: Charles A.
