The Family Peyper / Pyper The purpose of this document is to attempt to integrate that data researched by Heese and Lombard and published by the SA Genealogical Institute (volumes 7 [O-Ph], 8[Pi-Q] ) and the original research documented from archival documents by Robin M Pelteret. It was compiled in order to assist a Peyper / Pyper family member in researching the family. There are several individuals whose parents are said to be Jan Hermanus and Elisabeth Margaretha ("Emma") MEYER. These are those quoted below by Heese and Lombard, and who were born between 1801 and 1833: Johanna Lodewika, Johannes Hermanus, Elisabeth Catharina, Johanna Christina, Hendrik Emmanuel, Petrus Johannes, Willem Christoffel, Andries Johannes, Hermanus Cornelius, Maria Catharina, Helena Margaretha, Engela Maria Jacomina, Catharina Maria, Elisabeth Margareta and one other, born, according to his Death Notice circa November 1815 Cape Town Petrus Jacobus Peyper The two Family Trees are kept physically separate, and a different sequencing system has been used in order to distinguish between the two lines. More work needs to be done to ensure the accuracy of the progenitor status of Johann Christian Pfeifer and Johanna Christina van die Kaap; and that the line described by Heese and Lombard do indeed arise from Jan Hermanus and Elisabeth Margaretha ("Emma") Meyer. Regarding the spelling of the surname: I can see no evidence of a purposeful change in the spelling of the surname, in that both spellings were used prior to the Second Anglo-Boer War (said to be the defining event at the end of which the family split asunder). PEYPER predominated prior and after the war. I have found no reference to Pfeifer. 1
