Descendants of Robert de Tosny 1. ROBERT 1 DE TOSNY was born Abt. 970. Child of ROBERT DE TOSNY is: 2. i. ROBERT 2 DE TOSNY, b. Abt. 1030. Generation No. 1 Generation No. 2 2. ROBERT 2 DE TOSNY (ROBERT 1 ) was born Abt. 1030. He married ADELIZA. Notes for ROBERT DE TOSNY: Robert de Todeni/Toni/Tosny [Stenton has his name as Tosny, which correlates with a place-name in Normandy - a small village on the southern bank of the Seine above Rouen - the disputed territory of the Vexin was on the other bank - and the entries in the Domesday Book. He was related to Ralph who was rewarded with lands in East Anglia and the south midlands as well as Robert of Stafford, the major landholder there, Stenton, 'Anglo-Saxon England', O.U.P. (3rd. ed.) p.631. NB there is another de Tosny, Berengar, who receives grants of land according to Domesday] was standard bearer to William, Duke of Normandy during the invasion of 1066 and the Battle of Hastings. Robert was granted extensive estates after the Conquest the core being in Leicestershire. He held 'of the King' the manors of Harby, Barkestone, Bottesford, Redmile, Knipton, Long Clawson, Hose and Stathern which constitute one side of the Vale of Belvoir: it was he who built the first Belvoir Castle (now in Rutland - though all traces of Robert's castle have been destroyed and built over) - where his daughter's (or sister's?) child, Maud Bigod, was born. He was also granted land in Buckinghamshire, Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire, Essex, Gloucestershire, Lincolnshire, Northamptonshire and Yorkshire. {See 'Domesday Book' Alecto Ed. Penguin, London, 2002. [for connection with Belvoir Castle see 'Historic Houses and Gardens, Castles and heritage sites', Hudson, Banbury, 2006.] Child of ROBERT DE TOSNY and ADELIZA is: 3. i. ADELIZA 3 DE TOSNY, b. Abt. 1062; d. Abt. 1135. Generation No. 3 3. ADELIZA 3 DE TOSNY (ROBERT 2, ROBERT 1 ) was born Abt. 1062, and died Abt. 1135. She married ROGER BIGOD, son of ROBERT BIGOD. He was born Abt. 1040, and died 09 Sep 1107 in Earsham, NOR.. Notes for ROGER BIGOD: The Bigods were Earls of Norfolk after the Norman Conquest. Roger first appears in the records in 1075 when he received from the bishop of Bayeux a substantial share of the forfeited Norfolk estates of the rebel earl Ralph de Gael who had been banished. He served as sheriff of Norfolk from 1081-86 using his office to assemble further substantial estates in the county: in 1086 he held lands [6 lordships in Essex; 117 in Suffolk; 187 in Norfolk] valued at 430, the fifteenth highest valuation of any holding in Domesday. In 1087 William was removed from office by the new king, William II 'Rufus'. Bigod seized Norwich Castle and ordered a sub-tenant of his to seize the manor of Southwold from the abbey of Bury St. Edmunds. The King reclaimd Roger's lands but then relented and restored William as sheriff in 1091 when he also became steward of the royal household; both of these offices he held until he died. In 1101 he was granted the right to build a castle at Framlingham which was the seat of the family until its downfall in 1307. He also built a castle at Bungay. 1

He founded Thetford Priory. At his death his body is said to have been taken by the cathedral monks of Norwich - against the wishes of the family - for burial in the cathedral. It is possible that he had only one wife - Adeliza de Tosny, said to be the sister of Robert de Tosny (in Wikipedia). Child of ADELIZA DE TOSNY and ROGER BIGOD is: 4. i. MAUD 4 BIGOD, b. Abt. 1080, Belvoir Castle, RUT.. Generation No. 4 4. MAUD 4 BIGOD (ADELIZA 3 DE TOSNY, ROBERT 2, ROBERT 1 ) was born Abt. 1080 in Belvoir Castle, RUT.. He witnessed a Royal Charter in 1091 and was already a significant person in Norfolk by 1092-5. He held at least one manor - Happisburgh. By 1135, thanks to Henry I's generosity he enfeoffed 22 knights from his Norfolk Demesne. He held land in Kent also. He held Buckenham, NOR which became the caput of the honour, and Wymondham. He founded a priory and was a benefactor of Thetford Priory. He became pincerna regis [king's butler] by 1101 Child of MAUD BIGOD and WILLIAM D'AUBIGNY is: 5. i. WILLIAM 5 D'AUBIGNY, b. In 1139 Empress Matilda landed in England in pursuit of the throne, starting her campaign in Arundel through the offices of Adeliza. William remained loyal to Stephen and was rewarded with the title, Earl of Lincoln. He went on pilgrimage to Jerusalem 1155-8 and after his return successfully claimed the hereditary butlership as his by right. He served Henry II on an embassy to the Pope (in 1164) and escorted Henry's daughter in 1168 to Germany where she married Henry 'the Lion', Duke of Saxony. He was a leading figure in the defeat of the rebels in 1173. He was an eloquent and witty man, though made conceited by his marriage. He built Castle Rising and New Buckenham Castle in Norfolk. Notes for URSULA CHOKE: Ursula is identified as the wife of John Munday in WSRO 776/844/2 Indenture re Hill Fields, Redenham, dated 10 December 1627: 'John Munday as well for & in consideracon of the love and affection w[hi]ch he beareth to Ursula his nowe wife' which suggests that she may have been his second or subsequent wife. It is possible that it was not THIS John - the disparity in ages gives grounds for doubt - but she may have been significantly younger than him if she was his last wife of two or more. Had she been very long-lived the PR entry would probably have given an estimate of her years. The indenture reference makes it sound as though he was preparing a 'pension' of sorts to secure her old age. The indenture leases the land to Anthony and Edward Hungerford - almost certainly Ursula's cousin Anthony and his son. The surname 'Choke' supplied by Robert Easton [Jun 2008]. More About URSULA CHOKE: Burial: 14 Jan 1662/63, Ludgershall, WIL. Notes for JOHN MUNDAY: John 'the younger' is mentioned in Agnes' 1575 will as one of Henry's and her children: he was left six ewes.
