YOUTH ORGANISATIONS IN THE BENARTY AREA

FOUNDER OF THE BOY SCOUTS IN 1907 LORD BADEN POWELL 1937

THE FIRST SCOUT TROOP IN BENARTY AREA 1 ST. LOCHCRAIG SCOUT TROOP The first Troop was the 1 st. Lochcraig the Scoutmaster being Mr. John Kirk of Glencraig but by 1920 was no longer in existence very little is known about the troop. Mr. John Kirk later during the 1920s started the 1 st. Lochcraig Boys Brigade attached to the Lochcraig Church.

20 TH. FIFE (BALLINGRY) SCOUTS In 1920 an Edinburgh man Gordon Whitehead formed the 20 th. Fife (Ballingry) Scout Troop which during the years in existence met in various places ie. Flockhouse Hall (now the site of a garage), Loves Hall (situated north side of Bonaccord Cottage Crosshill), Ballingry & Crosshill Schools and Lochcraig Churh Hall. The various Scouters during the life of the Group are :- Norman Bell CM., Douglas Johnstoe SM., James Justice ASM. Andrew Leitch ACM., Tommy Leitch ACM., Adam Mckenzie ASM George Miller GSM., Arthur Nevay CM., Andrew Redpath CM. John Scott ASM., Sandy Scott SM., Robert Spence ASM. Norman Stuart ASM., William Walls ASM., Gordon Whitehead SM William Wilson GSM In the mid thirties after probably the most successful time the group has had in its existence in the course of four years the two ASMs. Norman Stuart and William Justice emigrated to South Africa followed by SM. Sandy Scott in 1937. Although Michael Scott seen on several of the following photographs was not a Scouter in the Group he was in attendance as cook for the annual camps during the 1930s and was an icon to all. The Scout Movement provided a great need to the young people of the area when they had to make your own entertainment it provided a meeting place to come in touch with other young people and encouraged the knowledge of how to survive in the open countryside and taught various skills along the way. The annual camp (costing fourteen shillings) in the present currency 70p. was the highlight of the year and the only holiday that they were likely to have especially in the 1920/1930s. the usual programme was a march to Lochgelly Station for a train to places like Arbroath, Helensburgh, Dunkeld, Hawick Edzell and Comrie. A week in the open air four meals a day then on the last day after striking camp a march back to the station for the train home breaking for a meal in a restaurant. Then off course the weekend campsite at the Vane Farm over looking the beautiful Loch Leven where over a period of many years was available to the Group. The trek cart was always very light on the Friday night but although we had used all the rations taken it always seemed very heavy for the return on Sunday night.

98 TH. FIFE (KIRKTOUN) In 1948 the first houses started to appear in the green spaces of Ballingry with a major building programme of a large development in the area. The local minister the Reverent John Seiveright suggested that a scout group should be started to cater for the new youth population. The 98 th. Fife (Kirktoun) Scout Group came into being with four prospective Scouters ie:- Alexander Justice, George Justice. Thomas Moffat and Arthur Nevay Scouters that served in the group were as follows :- Helen Braid, Yvonne Brown, Peggy BunyanJeannie Davie ACM., Agnes Glynn, Barbara Honeyman, Alexander Justice ASM., George Justice ASM., David Mitchell, Thomas Moffat SM., Arthur Nevay GSM., Charles Nisbet ASM. Mary Nisbet ACM., Margaret Porterfield (nee Smith) DC. Margaret Porterfield CM., Jean Ross, Moira Scott ACM. Robert Wilkie. The meeting places were Ballingry & Benarty Schools As usual the urge to go camping was in the thoughts of many of the scouts and the annual camp became a regular feature of scout life, some of the places visited were Arbirlot, Braco, Dunning and Innerleithing. The group were given the use of a site for weekend camping by Colonel Constable on the south side of Benarty and was easy assessable from Ballingry. Seven days before the annual camp to Innerleithing our colleagues in the Boys Brigade were told their camp was cancelled so our good deed was to take the BBs. to camp with the 98 th. Which turned out to be a very happy arrangement. Sadly in the late 1960s owing to the commitments by the Scouters and the inability to find replacements to run the troop it had to cease operating. It was only the sterling work over a long period of time by Margaret Porterfield that the Cub Pack continued.

YOUTH ORGANISATIONS IN BENARTY In bringing this together was with the sole purpose to try and show the important part that the local youth movements played in the community especially in the 1918/1939 period when there was mass unemployment and poverty was the norm. The fact that the Scout Movement celebrated it Centenary was purely a coincidence. I would have liked to been in a position to show more photographs of the Lochcraig Boys Brigade and Girl Guides and Lochore Boys Club who over many years played an important part in the area. This exercise could not be carried out without help and the following people were involved. Arthur Nevay Mrs. Ewings (Betty Muir) Mrs. Justice (Bunty Brown) Mrs. Murray (Amy Neilson) Mrs. Porterfield (Margaret Scott) Mrs. Scott (Betty Shepherd) Mr. Bobby Greenlees Mr. James Spence
