MARTHA ANDREA TIDEMAND952 Martha Andrea Marcusdatter Tidemann was born on the farm Oldervik in Sørfjorden, Rødøy, Helgeland, on February 27th 1862. Martha was baptized at home on June 15th 1862 and had her confirmation in the Rødøy church on June 23rd 1878. In the church register, behind her name, it says very good knowledge and relations. Martha emigrated from Norway in the middle of the 1880ties. Her two cousins, Lars Johan Pedersen2051 and Ole Carolius Pedersen2050 and their families, left Norway on June the 26 th 1889 and so did a group of 10 other persons from Sørfjorden (Oldervik), but there is no evidence whether Martha was among that group or if she had left earlier. In the USA they all took Tidemand as their surname. The name Tidemand is from their great-grandmother Martha Elisabeth (Lisa) Tidemand 2035. After arriving well in Seattle Martha met Regnor Fredrik Lauritz Dahl173 from Vadsø and they got married in 1891. There is among the family a story that Martha was working as a cook and chef at a restaurant of which Regnor was a frequent guest and he was caught by her cooking and beauty. Martha did not respond quickly to Regnor's proposals and he prepared a plan that made it; Regnor was at that time working and living in Everett outside Seattle City and he sent the message to Martha that he was sick and that he needed her assistance. Martha went and they got married. Another version is that Martha at the age of 27 (1890) entered Regnor's Norwegian delicatessen in Bellingham, WA, she told him that she was from Rødøy where Regor's cousin Simon was the vicar. Regnor was caught by her beauty and he gave her an apron, taught her how to dip strawberrie's in chocolate and they married in 1891. Anyway, it worked out and they had three children: 1. Ragnor Dahl1086, born in January 1893, died in 1980 2. Sigrid Marie Dahl953, born on January 17 th 1894, died on January 20 th 1992 3. Sheldon Tiedeman Dahl1325, born on October 4 th 1900, died on October 8 th 1973 Side 4 av 54

Martha was known for her cooking and when Regnor in 1898 was engaged to manage the transport to Alaska of a group of 78 sami and about 500 reindeers, Martha was engaged as chef to manage the kitchening and cooking. The family stayed together with the sami group and the reindeers in Fort Townsend north of Seattle until the transport continued to Alaska. Martha and the children went mostly likely back to Seattle while Regnor went on to Alaska together with the sami group and he stayed there for 2-3 years. There is the story about his return to Seattle and the family; Regnor had saved his beard and Sigrid that had not seen her father for a couple of years, begged her mother to ask the mysterious man to leave the house. Martha was known for her sharp, light blue eyes and her black hair. She drank a lot of black coffee, told marvelous stories and she did not trust the Russians landing on the West Coast. Martha had a strong character, she was very bright, learned English, a fine business woman, understood politics, and made a study of it and Government. Martha could predict people's future, but she had to give it up when some of her predictions turned out to be true. It was said that she had mental telepathy that was inherited by some of her children. She is by her grandchildren remembered as a very good and careful grandmother. They left Norway on June 26th 1889 from Trondhjem on D/S "Cameo" heading for Benson, Minnesota. There was a group of 10 other persons from Sørfjorden (Oldervik) onboard the ship, but Martha is not identified among those. She might have left earlier. Side 8 av 54

Lars Johan Tidemand (Pedersen) Tedeman 2051 was married to Antoinette Sahl 2053. They had seven children altogether some born in Norway and some in the USA and they have many descendants in the USA. Ole Caroliusen (Pedersen) Tideman 2050 was married to Ellen Maria Danielsdatter 2052, and they had five children; two of them born in Norway and three in the US. The brothers Lars Joah and Ole Caroliusen together with their spouses are buried in Everett, Washington, USA. Side 9 av 54

PLACE OF BIRTH The farm Oldervik is situated in Sørfjorden, Rødøy municipality, Helgeland. Sørfjorden is an arm of the Melfjord in Rødøy municipality in the county of Nordland. The fjord is 7 kms long. It starts between Snertnes to the south and Hammaren to the east, and from that point runs south to the mouth of Gjervalen, which is the continuation of Sørfjorden towards the east. The total length of the whole fjord is about 15kms. On the western side of the fjord are the villages Kilboghamn and Øresvik. On the eastern side are the villages Oldervik and Sørfjorden. County road no. 17 runs along the western side of the fjord in northerly direction to Kilboghamn, where there is a ferry connection to Jektvika in Værangen. There also is a ferry connection between Kilboghamn and Oldervik (Fv431). From Kilboghamn Fv 442 runs towards the north along the fjord to Steinsland. Oldervik anno 1960, the farm where Martha grew up is not on the photo The farm in Oldervik, gnr.19/bnr.1, was owned by the family from 1666. Abelone Olsdatter2029 (Martha's mother) and her husband Markus Jensen2028 are in the census 1865 recorded as living on the farm and so also in the census 1875, however Markus Jensen2028 is recorded as "farmer/leilending", meaning that he did not own the farm himself. The owner may have been his wife, Abelone, that inherited the farm after her parents. John Mortensen2191, married to Abelone's sister, Martha Elisabeth Kristine Olsdatter2176, is in the census 1900 recorded as "fisherman and farmer (owner)", Markus Jensen2028, Martha's father, is then recorded as living on the farm and maintained by ("Underholdes af sønnen") his son Ole Markussen2167 that was also recorded as living on the farm. John Martin Johnsen2192, the son of Martha Elisabeth Kristine Olsdatter2176 and John Mortensen2191, is in the census 1910 recorded as "farmer/owner" (gaardbruker/selveier), Markus Jensen2028 is still recorded as living on the farm and now as "føderaadsmand", meaning being maintained by the new owner as part of the inheritage. The farm, gnr.19/bnr.1, is today owned by Mrs. Kari Elna Ravnsborg that has no family relations to Martha. Side 10 av 54

THE FAMILYNAME TIDEMAND Also in Martha`s family they followed the Norwegian tradition of giving the children a surname that was made of their father`s personal name, the sons by adding "sen" to the father`s personal name, meaning the son of, and the daughters by adding "datter" to the father`s personal name, meaning the daughter of, for instance Jenssen or Jensdatter. (Jens being the father`s personal name). Martha and the cousins that emigrated to the US, took/used the surname Tidemand/Tedeman/Tideman after arriving to the states. The same was done by many others of the later generations among their relatives back home in Norway, however spelt in different ways, for example Tiedemand, Tidemand, Tidemann, Tedeman, etc. The family name Tidemand comes from Martha s great-grandmother, Martha Elisabeth (Lisa) Tidemand2035. Of her origin there are several theories/legends. 1.The Torrissen-story In the book about the Torrissen family in Rødøy we are told that Martha Elisabeth Tidemand2035 was baptized in Borre church, Vestfold on Nov 18 th 1770, and it claims that she was a bastard ( born out of wedlock) child from Åsgårdsstrand, the neighboring village of Borre. Her parents were Kari Jacobsdatter and Andreas Kielsen or Nielsen. When they marry in 1774, he is called by the name of Andreas Kielsen Bache, son of Kiel Andersen Bache, Åsgårdsstrand. None of Martha s godparents have the name Tidemand or like that. Åsgårdsstrand was a small town, and neighbors were often invited to be godparents. One of these was Lars Albretsen, whose wife was married into the Tidemand family. At the baptism in Borre 1770 something is added behind the name, but it is difficult to decipher, but the legend has it that she was adopted / a foster child. Her parents supposedly drowned at sea when a ship went down, and what s more; they were supposed to be of Italian origin. Along the Oslofjord there are many persons with the name Tidemand, spelt in various ways, though. It has also been used as a personal name. The name of Tidemand originally comes from Germany, and it has been claimed that Martha Elisabeth was named after a clergyman living in Oslo. Whether she was related to him or not, is not known. It has also been claimed that Andreas Kielsen was a clergyman (?) This Martha Elisabeth Tidemand shall as an adult have travelled north to become a shop assistant for her landlord in Nusfjord, Flakstad in Lofoten, Mr Hans Grøn. This theory has many holes, though: (i) in the first place, it seems that the child baptized on Nov 18 th 1770 died on January 1771, Side 11 av 54

just two months old. If this is correct, the Torrissen book from Rødøy does not tell the right story. (ii) in the second place, people who do research in shipwreck disasters, claim that they have no information about the loss of an Italian ship off the coast of Vestfold in the abovementioned period. (iii) in the third place the distance from Vestfold to Lofoten is long, and it would have been very much out of character for a young lady in those days to travel on her own all the way north to Nusfjord to become a shop assistant. However, the legends won t quite let go of the saga involving a shipwreck, but then from another place in the country. In a younger branch of the Tidemand family on the coast of Helgeland (Halvdan Tidemand), there was some talks of a shipwreck taking place in the Lofoten area. The place name of Nusfjord ( Flakstad, former part of Buksnes/Hol) is part of this story. The church registers from this period in this area are unfortunately lost. One theory is that the information was lost in a fire, but actually more likely was lost before the fire in 1899, because it was supposedly sent to the State Archives in Trondheim 10 years earlier; in 1888, when the decision was made that all church registers written before 1 st of January 1801 in Bergen, Trondheim and Tromsø were to be shipped to the State Archives in Bergen and Trondheim. All the same one is not quite willing to let go of the possibility that Martha Tidemand s ancestors may come from southern Europe many descendants have a relatively dark complexion, and in addition the way the hair grows on many of the males, is a characteristic feature. Because it was suggested that she was of southern European origin, there was not much talk about her ancestors. It was not quite comme-il-faut in Norway in those days to be of foreign stock. In Vestfold the saying has it that she literally came floating on a piece of wood to Åsgårdsstrand. She was together with her parents on an Italian ship that went down, and everybody lost their lives apart from this baby. When her mother realized the end was near, she wrapped her baby girl in some cloth and put her into a kind of ship s chest. In this way she was saved. But, as already has been stated, there is no knowledge of an Italian shipwreck in those waters during this period. The shipwreck was, however, a myth that went on living in the family for generations. Myths about children, who in the strangest way survived shipwrecks while their parents were lost at sea, are however quite common along the coast. Often this was a way to explain how children suddenly turned up in families with one or more unmarried daughters. Side 12 av 54

(2). In myth no 2 there is a pregnant woman (maybe a father too?) who was a passenger when a ship went down off the coast of Lofoten. The mother was saved, and her child should have been Martha Elisabeth. There have been speculations as to whether she might have had siblings in Nusfjord. Or maybe she just was brought up in this area? Exactly when the family s ancestor Martha Elisabeth Tidemand2035 was born, whoever she might have been, is not known, but when she died in Rødøy on May 6 th 1822, she was recorded 55 years old. She was buried in Rødøy on May 12 th 1822. This means she ought to have been born in 1767, and not, as stated in the baptism register of Borre, in 1770. The truth may be that we here have two persons bearing the same name, two namesakes, in other words? Lisa Tidemand2035 she was normally called. Many fishermen used to hang around in the shop of Hans Grøn in Nusfjord during days when bad weather forced the fishing boats to remain in the harbor during the annual Lofoten fisheries season. One day she asked these men for help to lift a barrel of syrup up onto the counter. Then a sturdy fellow came forward and lifted the barrel up on the counter all by himself. The man was Jens Olsen2034 ( born Jan 18 th 1764) from Oldervik in Rødøy. This performance must have made a great impression on Lisa, because when Jens Olsen2034 in spring the same year (1794) came north to fetch his stock fish, Lisa joined him going back south to Rødøy. The saying goes that she got a shock when her coming father-in-law came down to the shore to receive them he was an old man in a red woolen cap og trousers that were mended behind and on the knees. He was getting rather old at the time, Ol Nilsa 2036 (66), although he lived on to be 92. ( 1728 June 6 th 1820). Lisa Tidemand2035 and Jens Olsen2034 got engaged to be married on May 8 th 1794 and they married in Rødøy on Juny 20 th 1794, all within the year they met and as their first child (Karen Pernille) was born in the same year, it must have been what we call love at first sight in Lofoten during the winter fisheries. Lisa s father s name unfortunately is not written in the church register in connection with the marriage in 1794, and the fathers' names were normally not written in the book at marriages until the formular of 1812 was taken into use. Berith Melchersdatter, born in 1794 (7 years old at the time of the census) It is suggested that Jens Olsen2034 was a comparatively wealthy person for his time, and it bears to be mentioned that a man by the name of Jacob Olsen, born in Oldervik two years after Jens (1766), and most likely his brother, was a wealthy man of high esteem who owned quite a lot of land, partly from his wife s family, but also from his father. Knowing that Jens was older, he probably did not inherit less. Maybe this land was part of the property of the old aristocratic Benkestok family? The Benkestok family had its residence on Meløy an island that was part of the Rødøy parish at the time. The saying has it that Lisa soon put things in good order in Oldervik. She was a highly qualified cook and was hired in to do the cooking at great events, not only in Rødøy, but in the rest of the region as well. It is also being said that she wore silken clothes, and that she was a very wise woman. The saying also has it that once when two pauper boys escorted (by boat) her back to Oldervik after a cooking commission, she opened the lid of her chest and gave them of the good food she brought along. She let the heavy chest stay in the boat shed for the time being when she went home, but the next day the chest was gone. The hungry boys had taken it, stolen the food inside and had let the chest sink to the bottom of a shoal in Sørfjorden. This part of the fjord is still today called Kistegrunnen (= the shoal of the chest). Once there came a parcel by way of the vicar in Rødøy, to the address of Martha Elisabeth Tidemand2035 ( inheritance?) The vicar was new in the parish, and he handed the parcel over to a man unknown to himself, asking him to take it to addressee. He promised to do so, but the parcel never reached its destination, and the vicar was unable to recognize the man. However, all of a sudden Albert on Sperstad had become a man of considerable means, although nobody could understand how this had come about. Not long after this, Albert became very peculiar and he eventually drowned himself. It was given as the gospel truth that he was the thief. His wife later also grew very strange, she always suspected that some person was stalking her. Lisa is long time dead, but if she had been alive, she most certainly would have settled this mystery /problem as well. Lisa and Jens are both buried in Rødøy. Regnor immigrated to the USA together with his first wife, Marie Lindeberg249 and their daughter Ragna956, at that time 6 months old, and ran various business enterprises in Michigan and Washington (Seattle). He had 4 children with Marie Lindeberg249 ( first wife), but all of them died in Michigan in 1889. He then moved to Seattle. In 1891 he married Martha Andrea Tidemand935 and they had three children. Regnor had two children in Norway before he married Marie Lindeberg249, these children grew up with Lovise Rushfeldt and Karl Olsen (Jerijervi) at Krampenes near Vadsø. One person who describes Regnor Dahl s life, starts like this: There once was a man who at the age of 70 started to work as a bank clerk. Regnor early got fascinated by the sea and what business opportunities the sea might offer. At an early age he established and ran business with fish products, especially stock fish, from Vadsø as well as from Arkangelsk. In connection with his having the two children Rudolf and Agnes Therese, his profession is described as a wine merchant and restaurateur. Around 1875 (26 years old) he bought the fishing village Langenes in Vesterålen and became a pioneer when it comes to sale of fresh fish transported on ice, all the way to the markets in Kristiania (Oslo). Regnor had also interests in his brother Herman s businesses in Varanger (Eastern part of Finnmark) the funding of which was partly based on Regnor s collateral. The collapse of Herman s businesses and general downturn in the economy of Northern Norway, ruined Regnor. He gave up Langenes and immigrated with his wife and their daughter to the USA in 1881. He settled in the mining town of Calumet, Michigan. The climate and environment of Calumet proved to be disastrous to the family s health. His wife Marie and their four children died. first wife after 12 years of marriage, 3 children died before their mother and the eldest 9 years, died 3 months after her mother of typhoid and pneumonia. This was in 1889. In a description of Regnor we read this about his further travels: With grief in his heart, but with a smile on his mouth the fall of 1889 finds Mr. Dahl in Seattle. He now wanted to find peace to work in the cool sea breeze and among the long sea waves. The sea after all was his companion in childhood and the two of them seemed to belong together. After having got Alaska from the Russians, the Americans tried to develop the state by investing in reindeer herds. Two groups of reindeers and Sami people were sent for from Finnmark. After bids and strong competition from his brother Herman and also Herman's son Adolph, Regnor in 1898 was hired to be the leader of the transport of the last group, consisting of 78 Sami persons -men and women with plenty of equipment and 500 reindeer. The group came from Bossekop, Finnmark. The group settled in Fort Townsend where Regnor became a kind of civilian leader and his wife (Martha Andrea) got the job as a cook and chef. Having arrived in Alaska Regnor asked an Indian woman the name of the surrounding area. He was answered Naomi. Regnor writes about this in his report to Washington and suggests that the place should be given the name Nome after the word of the Indian. And this is the way it turned out. Linguists, however, claim that Naomi means: I do not understand what you are saying. On Nome s home page today one can read this about how the town got its name: In February 1899, a group of 42 men who had staked property and mining claims on the Snake River near Nome City, officially agreed to change the name of the new mining camp to Anvil City, because of the confusion with the Nome River, which was located four miles to the southeast, and with Cape Nome, the point of land located twelve miles from the city. The name change only made the situation even more confusing. The town was locally known as Anvil City for much of 1899, but the United States Post Office Department insisted on calling the community "Nome," apparently because it was thought that a town called Anvil City would be easily confused with the village of Anvik on the lower Yukon. A competing town site had been established at the mouth of the Nome River and it was also called Nome City. The Anvil City merchants feared that the Post Office might decide to move the "Nome" Post Office from Anvil City on the Snake River to Nome City on the Nome River. After a vote was held the merchants reluctantly agreed to change the name of Anvil City back to Nome. Against its wishes the city was stuck with the unusual name of Nome. Unlike other towns which are named for explorers, heros or politicians, Nome was named as a result of a 50 year-old spelling error. In the 1850's an officer on a British ship off the coast of Alaska noted on a manuscript map that a nearby prominent point was not identified. He wrote "? Name" next to the point. When the map was recopied, another draftsman thought that the? was a C and that the a in "Name" was an o, and thus a map-maker in the British Admiralty christened "Cape Nome. Still, Regnor had an important position in connection with the transportation of the second group of Sami people and reindeer from Finnmark to Alaska. It took place in 1899. In 1902 Regnor and his family went back to Seattle where he with his Alaskan means established a fish shop. But as one person wrote: Good fortune and hardship were fighting to dominate his life because in 1914 the business and home perished in a fire. Regnor was 65 at the time. But age and living condition had not been able to put their mark on Dahl s looks; because not one person in a hundred can encounter The years of dust with such an attitude and force that Regnor Dahl does, and not one in a thousand can start his career as a bank clerk at that age.
