Ebenezer 1911 Eight households were headed by people descended from chocolate-maker John Kipling (b 1788) and his wife Sarah Hinkins, via two of their sons Joseph (b1811) and Ebenezer (1814). John was the son of warehouseman Robert Kipling, whose origins are as yet undetermined. Morning Advertiser - Friday 10 November 1843 1851.Bunhill Row Finsbury John died later in 1861. It is likely that his parents married in 1777 (note that a John Bird was a witness at daughter Anne s wedding) 1 St Mary Lambeth, 1777 I have been unable to trace Robert s death but afterwards, did widow Ann marry a witness from daughter Anne s wedding? 1 A Robert Kipling was a tea-dealer at Tower Hill in the 1770s. However, it is possible that this was the Robert Kipling of Bowes and later Ferrybridge, who coincidentally also married in London in 1777 (see The Tippling Dean Kipling ). A Robert Kipling, porter, was tried at the Old Bailey for theft in 1773. In evidence, he is quoted as referring to his master in Yorkshire but I have not been able to ascertain anything more about him (see Transported! ).

1901. Chestnut Ave., West Ham. Ebenezer died in 1910. In 1911, Elizabeth was head of the family (#142). George, age 5, was a natural son of Jane. He had originally been registered as George Westcott, with his father named as George Westcott, a waiter, and Jane calling herself Westcott, too. However, all references to Westcott were removed three months later following the submission of a statutory declaration by Jane and mother Elizabeth Ann. Elizabeth Ann died in 1924. George died in Newham in 1981 Thomas Thomas never married and in 1939, he can be found living with sister Jane and nephew George in East Ham. Thomas probably died at Thurrock in 1943 and George at Newham in 1981. Benjamin Benjamin was a clicker. This was someone who cut out the uppers for shoes from sheets of leather. He married in 1886.

Twin sons Thomas Arthur and Benjamin James were born less than five months later. St Jude, Bethnal Green Thomas Arthur died within three months but daughters Mary and Ada followed. 1891. Weymouth Ter. Shoreditch The family was still there in 1901, Benjamin now being a basket maker, as he still was in 1911 (#191) Benjamin died in 1936. Son Benjamin followed his father s trade. He married in 1909.

A son Benjamin William had arrived by 1911 (#189). Benjamin James died in 1966 in Brentwood district and Benjamin William in 1982 in Enfield. Jonathan Elisha Jonathan Kipling married Eliza Ellen Clark in 1897 at Bethnal Green. In 1901, they were living next door to Jonathan s brother Ebenezer (see below). 1901. 61 Cypress Street, Bethnal Gree n Son Jonathan Edward died in 1905, although curiously he was entered in the 1911 census (#139). The parents however correctly recorded that only four of their five children were still living.

Jonathan served in the 10 th battalion of the Essex Regiment in WW1 and was killed in August 1918 at the battle of Amiens (see WW1 Kiplings 1918). Albert Stephen married Gladys Osborn at West Ham in 1930. At the time of the 1939 national registration, Glady was residing away from London with two young daughters (probably having been evacuated) whilst Albert was in lodgings in London. 1939. Sixth Avenue, East Ham 1939. Blofield and Flegg, Norfolk 1964 electoral register. Rose Glen, Romford. He died at Romford in 1985. Ernest Jonathan married Alice Beardsall at East Ham in 1937. 1964 electoral register. Kempton Road, East Ham. He died at Torbay in 1989. Ebenezer John Ebenezer married in 1893.

St John, Bethnal Green. George and John were both at Globe Road school in Tower Hamlets in 1898: 1901. 61 Cypress Street, Bethnal Green

By 1911, they had four sons and three daughters (#141): Ebenezer John senior died at West Ham in 1933 George married Eliza Filmer in 1918. In 1939, they were living (with one still-censored child) in Romford. He probably died in Redbridge district in 1967. John married Victoria Johnys in 1920. The had a daughter, Iris, in 1921. John may have died at Hammersmith in 1968. Victoria may have died in Poplar in 1963.

Ebenezer John died in March 1918 at the battle of St Quentin (see WW1 Kiplings 1918 ). Edward Stephen married Winnifred E E Barnard at West Ham in 1933. He seemed, however, to have had a rather casual approach to the laws regarding motor vehicles! Essex Newsman - Saturday 05 March 1927 Chelmsford Chronicle - Friday 02 August 1929 Chelmsford Chronicle - Friday 03 August 1934 Essex Newsman - Saturday 16 February 1935 He was working as a bus driver in 1939, living in East Ham: Winifred and one still-censored child were living at Gipping in Suffolk, probably having been evacuated: Edward died in 1974 in Kensington.

Stephen and Edward Stephen and Edward were living together in 1939 Ruskin Avenue, East Ham. 1939 Edward died in 1944 and Stephen in 1959, both as far as I can tell unmarried. Elizabeth Elizabeth s son, William, was recorded as James Barton in the 1901 census and married Mable Little in 1910 under the name James Kipling. They were living in North East Ham in 1911, where he used the name James William Kipling (#140). They were living at Boundary Road, Barking in 1939 (with one child s record still hidden in 2017 as not known to have died). James died in 1967 in Havering district.
