Descendants of Lorenzo Dow Atha And Mary Jane (Wiseman) Atha By Nyla CREED DePauk The first of the Atha family to settle in Raleigh County was Lorenzo Dow (L. D.) Atha. Lorenzo Dow Atha was born about 1829 near Cross Roads, Monroe County, Virginia, to Addison Wesley Atha and Frances Fanny (Rains) Atha. On November 29, 1854, Lorenzo married Susan Caroline Vass who was born about 1832 at Little Wolf Creek, Monroe County or Mercer County, in current-day West Virginia. Caroline s parents were Robert Vass and Mary "Polly" Steel. In the 1850 Monroe County, Virginia, census, at Household #345, Caroline is living with William T. Vass. She died on December 19, 1855, in Monroe County. Lorenzo and Mary Jane Atha Lorenzo Dow Atha was married second to Mary Jane Wiseman, born about September 1834, at Drooping Lick, Monroe County, Virginia, and died March 20, 1923, at Mattsville, Raleigh County, West Virginia. Mary Jane was buried on March 21, 1923, at Mattsville. Lorenzo and Mary Jane were married on August 7, 1856, at Wolf Creek, Monroe County. They were married by Rev. Alfred Buhrman at Wolf Creek, Monroe County. Mary Jane was the daughter of Henry Taylor Wiseman and Nancy (Weikle) Wiseman who also settled in Raleigh County. The family is listed in the following census records: 1860 Monroe County VA 11 June 1860 Household # 224 - Peterstown Lorenzo Athy 29 Mary J. 26 William 3 Henry W. 1 Calvin V. 4/12 Amanda Wiseman 12 1870 Raleigh County, WV 16 July 1870 Household #78/96 - Clear Fork District Lorransy Atha 40 Mary 40 Pembrook 15 Henry 10 Calvin 8 George 6 Ellen 5 Virginia 1 Lorenzo is listed as a private with a Confederate union (Company B of the 166th Virginia Militia of Monroe County). During the Civil War, two of Lorenzo and Mary s children were born in Ohio. The Atha family settled in Raleigh County after the Civil War, but prior to the 1870 census. In 1876, 130 acres of land on Sandlick was purchased by Mary Jane Atha from William Turner. I am unable to explain the reason the land was sold to Mary Jane rather than Lorenzo Atha. The following deed extracts have been located.

Mary Jane Atha to George L. Atha 37 acres 1899 Mary Jane Atha to Charles A. Atha 12 13/16 acres 1901 Mary Jane Atha to N. V. Atha 29 acres 1901 Mary Jane Atha to Charles A. Atha 44 acres 1905 Mary Jane Atha to Charles A. Atha 21 acres 1912 Once the individual deeds were made, the total was 143 13/16 acres, 13 13/16 acres more than originally thought. N. V. (Nancy Virginia), wife of Thomas Williams, sold their coal and mineral rights to J. Q. Dickinson about 1901. 1880 Raleigh County, WV Household #23 - Clear Fork District L. D. Atha 54 born WV Mary Jane 47 born WV Henry W. 21 born WV Calvin V. 20 born WV George L. 17 born OH Amanda E. 15 born OH Nancy V. 14 born WV Margaret E. 11 born WV James W. 8 born WV Charles A. 4 born WV 1900 Raleigh County, WV Household #187/188 Clear Fork District Mary J. Athy 65 born Sep 1834 9 children, 7 living I have found very little information on Lorenzo Atha. However, the book Beckley U.S.A. states that in 1890, Lorenzo Atha was a member of the jury that heard the trial of William I. Martin for the murder of Martin s wife. The trial, beginning in April 1890, found Martin guilty; and he was sentenced to be hanged. Lorenzo died sometime between February 15 and 20, 1899, at Mattsville. The cause of his death was listed as senility. I have found Mary Jane listed in the following census records, also. In the 1910 Raleigh County census, she was living at Household #154, in the Clear Fork District. She is living with her son-in-law and daughter, Amos and Margaret (Atha) Stover. In 1920, Mary Jane is living in Raleigh County, at Household #132 in Sandlick. She is living with her son-in-law and daughter, Thomas and Nannie Williams. The census incorrectly lists Mary as mother. It should have read mother-in-law. Children of Lorenzo and Mary Jane are as follows: 1. William Pembrook "Pem" Atha was born about April 4, 1857, in Summers County, Virginia, and died in September 1941. Pem married first Sarah Ann "Sally" Sherwood who was born about October 1862 in Monroe County, Virginia, and died December 6, 1936. They were married on March 18, 1880, in Monroe County. Her parents were Joseph Sherwood and Caroline Weikle. Pem married second Nannie Holstein about 1937. Children of Pem and Sally are as follows: 2 William Pembrook Atha

a. Minnie Pearl Atha was born February 17, 1881, in Raleigh County. She died July 27, 1960. She married first a Hartwell. Minnie was married second about 1895 to Phillip Eugene Rosette born about 1858 in Spain. b. Nora E Atha was born in October 1882 in Raleigh County. Nora died on October 28, 1955. She married first Thomas "Tom" Marie who was born about March 1882. Tom s parents were George Marie and Rachel A. (Jarret) Marie. Nora married second David "Dave" Igo. c. Lonnie H "Lon" Atha was born April 9, 1885, in Raleigh County, and died about October 1928. Lon married Blanche Harriet "Hattie" Young on December 24, 1904. In 1910, Lon was living at Fayette County, in Household #413 in Powellton, Fayette County. d. William Daniel "Will" Atha, was born on June 30, 1886, at Elkridge, Fayette County, and died September 6, 1966. Will married Annie Mae Young. I have seen two different dates of birth for Annie September 29, 1890 at Mauldin, Kanawha County, and September 27, 1891. I do not know which date is correct for Annie. Her parents were Benjamin Olsby Young and Mary Elizabeth (Light) Young. In 1910, Will and Annie were living at Household #416/416 in Powellton, Fayette County. e. Virgie Atha was born about 1890 and died October 25, 1950. Virgie married Jeff Mayes. f. James Edward Atha married Blanche B. Lowe who was born April 13, 1897, and died in February 1982. I have two dates of birth for James. One is November 11, 1892, in Fayette County. The other is November 11, 1893. James died on January 30, 1979. g. Hazel Atha, born August 1825, died about October 1952. She married "Alley" Sheppard. h. Myrtle Edith Atha was born on January 20, 1898, and died January 23, 1980. Myrtle married Ernest Lee Price who was born in July 1897 and died September 9, 1983. i. Herbert Earl Atha, Sr was born December 17, 1900 in West Virginia. Herbert died April 16, 1967. Herbert was married to Muriel Holt who was born on April 30, 1902, in West Virginia. She died on June 16, 1971, in Chicago, Cook County, Illinois. When the 1930 Fayette County, West Virginia, census was taken, Herbert was residing at Household #212/219 at Powellton. 2. Henry W. Atha was born about 1859 in Monroe County, Virginia. He died about 1890. Henry married first Virginia F Hix who was born about 1862 in Monroe County. They were married on December 21, 1880, in Summers County, West Virginia, by Reverend H. C. Tinsley. Virginia was the daughter of Andrew Jackson (Hicks) Hix and Mary Ann (Miller) Hix. Henry was married second to Paulina Jane Allen who was born May 10, 1867, in Raleigh County. Henry and Pauline were married May 1, 1886, in Raleigh County by John H. Honaker. Pauline was the daughter of Carr Allen, Jr and Cordelia (Hendricks) Hendrix. The only child that I have located for Henry and Pauline is: a. Ada J. Atha was born on April 14, 1887, in Raleigh County. 3. Calvin V. Atha was born on January 22, 1860, in Monroe County, Virginia, according to his first marriage record to Elizabeth B. Wheeler (widow). When he married Elizabeth Etta Daniel, his place of birth was listed as Summers County, Virginia. Calvin is listed in the 1910 Raleigh County census at Household #142, Clear Fork District. In 1920, he is living in Raleigh County at Household #141, Sandlick. He is listed in the 1930 Fayette County census at Household #93/97 at Elkridge in Kanawha District #1. He is living with 3

his son John and Axie Atha. Calvin died March 8, 1931, at Elkridge, in the Kanawha District of Fayette County. Calvin married first Elizabeth Benson (Hix) (Buckland) Wheeler who was born about 1851 in Greenbrier County, Virginia. They were married on February 11, 1881, in Summers County, by Reverend C. P. Kelley. Elizabeth was the daughter of Andrew Jackson (Hicks) Hix and Mary Ann (Miller) Hix. Their children are listed below. a. Helen Atha married a Boskie. b. Henry Atha. c. Atha by Debora Kerr for additional information. George Lewis Atha (Picture shared by Carrie Wray.) George Atha and Margaret Atha (Picture shared by Carrie Wray.) 4. George Lewis Atha was born May 10, 1864, in Jackson County, Ohio. George died about 1951. The 1930 Boone County census lists him as living in household #59/67, at Van. He was living with his son James and daughter-in-law Lula. George married Margaret Emma "Maggie" Wiseman who was born on February 18, 1868, in Monroe County. Robert married Emma Mae Dunbar on November 13, 1910, in Lorenzo Wilson and Lillie (Atha) Wilson (Picture shared by Carrie Wray.) Raleigh County. She was born in October 1888 and died on January 21, 1953. In 1930, Emma was the head of household #90/90. Her parents were William Spencer Dunbar and Mary Jane Bell (Oliver) Dunbar. d. William French Atha s date of birth is a mystery to me. French was born March 6, 1886 according to his tombstone. Two different voter registrations are on file at the Raleigh County Courthouse, at Beckley. One shows him being born on March 6, 1888, while the other shows March 7, 1888 at Mattsville. A social security death index search shows his birth as March 6, 1890. William F. Atha was born in February 1890 according to the 1910 census. It seems to me that William F. Atha listed as being born in February 1890 is actually French Atha. The 1920 census indicates he was 27, thus born ca 1893. French married Louisa Frances "Icie" Williams who was born October 8, 1896, and died October 4, 1937. They were married about 1915. Icie was the daughter 5

of Henry Jahue "Jehu" Williams and Sarah Elizabeth "Betty" (McGary) Williams. French married second Mealey Albertine Stover after 1938. "Rosie" (Scarbrough) Stover. e. Amanda Jane "Mandy" Atha, born August 21, 1891, at Sandlick, Raleigh County, died September 5, 1987, in Toledo, Oregon County, Ohio. Mandy was buried at the Wiseman Cemetery, at the mouth of Dillon Creek, Sandlick. Mandy married John Wesley "Johnny" Wiseman on May 5, 1910, in Raleigh County. She was the daughter of James William Lively and Amanda Elizabeth "Mandy" (Toney) Lively. Bessie married first Emerson Lee Wilson. Bessie lived at Prosperity many years. g. Mary Ellen Atha was born about June 1894. She married Seth Thomas Dunbar on December 27, 1910, at Matville, Raleigh County. They were married by Reverend A. C. Godby. Seth was born in February 1887 and died about 1956. His parents were William Spencer Dunbar and Mary Jane Bell (Oliver) Dunbar. h. Frank Charles Atha, Sr was born June 5, 1897, probably in Raleigh County. He died on November 20, 1941, in a coal mining accident at the No. 6 Eccles Coal Mine, Eccles, Raleigh County. Frank married first Macie Treadway who was born about 1903 in West Virginia. Frank married second Josie Esther Dickens on October 29, 1929. She was born September 12, 1902, in Raleigh County. Esther died November 4, 1986, in Raleigh County. Her parents were Henry Jahue (Jehu) Dickens and Mary Etta (Marietta) "Ettie" Turner. i. Lizzie Atha, born about 1899, died about 1939. j. A child, born about 1901, died before 1910. k. Lacy Earl Atha, born October 24, 1906, at Sandlick, died May 22, 1990, in Boone County. He married first Rhoda Stewart who was born July 6, 1912, and died May 29, 1980. Rhoda was the daughter of George Stewart and Martha Jane (Cook) Stewart. Lacy married second Gladys Sansom. 5. Amanda Ellen Atha was born on February 15, 1865, in Jackson County, Ohio. However, her birth is recorded in Monroe County, West Virginia. Ellen died on March 14, 1955, at Eccles, Raleigh County. Ellen married George Wilson (or Wentworth) Dillon who was born August 12, 1865, at Sandlick, Raleigh County. George died August 7, 1955 at Eccles. They were married on September 14, 1887 at Sandlick. George s parents were George Wilson Dillon and Emily K. Wright. See Descendants of the Dillon Family by Deanna Adams Holm. 6. Tom was born October 2, 1861, in Raleigh County. They were married on August 28, 1884, in Raleigh County. Tom died February 24, 1933, at Sandlick, Raleigh County. Tom was a justice of the peace and was, as the custom of the time, called Squire Williams. In 1910, he was listed in the Raleigh County census at household 6

#423 in the Skelton Precinct, on the Beckley Turnpike. I was told that the family s home was near where the 7-Up Plant is located. In 1920, they were living at household #132 at Sandlick. Tom s parents were Christopher "Chris" Williams and Sina E. (Arnold) Williams. Nancy and Tom s children are as follows: a. Elbert Williams was born November 5, 1885, at Mattsville (Sandlick). He died April 3, 1921, at Cranberry, Raleigh County. Elbert married Leota Matilda Frances Dickens who was born on May 30, 1886, at Mattsville, Raleigh County. Elbert and Leota were married on December 14, 1904, at Mattsville. Leota died September 28. 1971, at Prosperity, Raleigh County.
