Location Ripley Grange occupies a fabulous elevated position adjoining Epping Forest on the southern fringe of Theydon Bois. The property takes full advantage of its rural setting and the excellent nearby road and rail links. Junction 5 of the M11 lies about 4 miles to the south-east, providing access to London City Airport (14 miles), Canary Wharf (16 miles) and the City of London (16 miles). Junction 26 of the M25 lies 4 miles to the north-west giving access to all areas of the Home Counties and the major motorway network, with the M11 serving London Stansted Airport 21 miles to the north. For those who prefer to commute by the London Underground network, a Central Line station can be found in the village. There are many well-regarded schools in the area including Coopersale Hall and Oaklands at preparatory level and Chigwell School and Bancroft s at secondary level. A little further afield boarding is available at Brentwood School, Felsted and Bishop s Stortford College. The house enjoys panoramic views over miles of undulating open countryside to the south-east, whilst Gaunt s Wood (now a deer sanctuary) stands protectively on the northern boundary, with 6,000 acres of Epping Forest to the west.
The History Ripley Grange was conceived, designed and executed by the late Mr C.F. Clark before his own occupation. After touring Essex and parts of Hertfordshire in search of a suitable site for more than two years, he finally selected the present one and commenced building in 1928. The original construction took 15 months but he continued to alter, improve and perfect the property up until 1940. As it stands today, the house is a skilful reproduction of a grand Elizabethan Mansion, with extraordinary architectural detail invariably reflecting other admired houses, such as Hampton Court and Blenheim Palace. The gardens and grounds were created during the same period and the entire property is something of a testament to the exceptional genius of Mr Clark, a millionaire who made his fortune from the invention of carbon paper. The present owners have brought the property into the 21st century, re-arranging and upgrading the kitchen, bathrooms and the addition of a magnificent leisure complex; all of which have been sympathetically carried out in order to keep the integrity of the original building. Built in the Elizabethan style, based on a stone plinth, the ground floor elevations are of red brick construction with the upper floors presenting exposed timbers with plaster panels beneath gabled tiled roofs with ornately carved barge boards.
