Sheffield Daily Telegraph 1 Jul 1904: Death of Veteran Race Horse Owner. The death took place at his London residence yesterday morning, at the age of 84 years, Mr William Redfern, who, for more than half-a-century, has been closely identified with the Turf. His colours were blue and white striped jacket, scarlet cap and as far back as the fourties he owned horses under Jockey Club rules. John Dory first ran for Mr Redfern in 1851. He won several races at Scottish meetings. In the Paisley Cup he defeated Haricot, who afterwards became famous at the stud as the dam of Caller Ou. Perhaps Mr Redfern s best horse was Yard Arm [!], who, after retiring from racing, won many Queen s premiums, and also sired many winners at hunters shows, as well as good jumpers. Others to win for Mr Redfern were Vanderhum, Camlet, Galvanic, Fatherless, Philanthropist, and Confessional [also owned Magistrate]. Wolf was the last to run for him, in 1899, since when Mr Redfern has been an invalid.
