Some beleve that Joost Sooy, Sr. and Sarah Van Tenhoven had a son Joost who ded as an nfant, thus ths Joost s often called Joost II rather than Yoost Jr. The Englsh equvalent of Yoost s Joseph. The Joseph Sooy II famly bble s owned by Norman H. Sooy, Kansas Cty, Mo. Known as the Baskett Bble and prnted n Ednburgh, Scotland n 1749, the bble contans the brth records of Joseph and Elzabeth's chldren and John and Mary Smth's (Elzabeth's parents) chldren. Joseph was a slave holder as evdenced by the followng advertsement that appeared n the Pennsylvana Gazette on 8/9/1750 whch names Joseph as a former owner of a runaway slave: "Run away from the subscrber hereof, a lkely young negro fellow about fve feet nches hgh, named Lot, took wth hm when he went away a flowered jacket and breeches, an ozenbrgs shrt, and a fne shrt wth ruffles at the bosom, old shoes, no stockng, and some money. Danel LeedsLeeds:Danel. 15. Phoebe SooySooy:Phoebe b. 19 Apr 1759, d. 19 Oct 1835. Phoebe's martal status s somewhat of a mystery. The Sooy Famly Genealogy lsts Joseph Maths as Phoebe Sooy's husband (page 81) and does not lst any chldren for the couple. It also states (page 66) that the author, Irwn Gladstone Sooy, beleves that the Phoebe mentoned n Leah Blackman's "Hstory of Lttle Egg Harbor Townshp" as Ebenezer Sooy's mother was the daughter of Ebenezer Tucker.3 If ths s so, why then sn't Ebenezer's last name Tucker nstead of Sooy? 4

Also, Ebenezer Tucker's martal status s well documented. Ebenezer Tucker's second wfe was Phoebe, daughter of John and Susannah Rdgway. Leah Blackman (page 360) states "If I have been rghtly nformed, Joseph, son of Yose Sooy, was the father of Phoebe Sooy, who was the mother of Capt. Ebenezer Sooy, of Bass Rver."4 Ths s Leah's way of nferrng that Ebenezer s the llegtmate son of Phebe and would explan the fact that Ebenezer mantaned the Sooy last name. When she wrote her hstory n 1880, a respectable lady would not overtly state that a chld was llegtmate. The Lttle Egg Harbor death records lst Ebenezer, age 68, dyng on 10/26/1860 as the son of Phebe Sooy. Furthermore, the Ebenezer Sooy bble records found at Atlantc County Hstorcal Socety state that "Phebe Sooy departed ths lfe 19th October 1835 age 76 years and sx months". Note that n both cases Phebe's last name s lsted as Sooy whch support's Leah Blackman's nference that Phoebe was not marred when she gave brth to Ebenezer. It supports the theory that Phoebe was never marred. Murray and Jean Harrs dd extensve research on the Maths famly n the wrtng of ther book enttled "The Maths Famly of Lttle Egg Harbor." Ther research faled to dscover that Phoebe Sooy marred Joseph Maths as mantaned n the Sooy Famly Genealogy. That along wth the data dscussed n the precedng paragraphs would lead ths author to beleve that the statement that Phoebe Sooy marred Joseph Maths s n error. 34. EbenezerSooy:Ebenezer b. 3 Sep 1790.
