We have loved living at Badgers, to have played our part in preserving this glorious old house and its gardens has been a joy
I The Property Badgers is that rare thing, being an attractive period Yeoman s farmhouse dating, we understand from the 16th century, with well proportioned rooms and good ceiling heights for a property of this age. The house sits in stunning gardens of 1.1 acres divided into a number of rooms, and being in symmetry with the house and providing perfect outside entertaining space or just simply areas to relax from spring through to autumn. The house has an interesting history, being the former home in the 1930 s of Peggy Guggenheim the American art collector, who mentions the house several times in her autobiography Out of this Century. It was also for a brief period in the 1980 s lived in by the actress Kate O Mara. I Location Hurst is a small hamlet out in the country in the heart of The South Downs National Park between Petersfield and South Harting. The nearest facilities are either in South Harting which has a pub, shop and a post office or Buriton with its two pubs. Petersfield and its comprehensive range of facilities including Waitrose and a mainline station with train services to London Waterloo in around an hour is 2.3 miles away and is particularly blessed with an excellent range of schools including Bedales and Churchers College. The other popular local school, Ditcham Park is just 3 miles from the house. The A3 provides good regional transport links to the M25 and beyond and the larger centres of Winchester, Guildford and Chichester are all within reasonable driving distance, as are the harbours and creeks of the South Coast. There are a good number of footpaths and bridleways in the surrounding area including The South Downs Way and The Sussex Border Path.
I Outside A drive leads down to a good sized parking area and adjacent to this is the house and the outbuildings. Of particular note is the ancient yew which is reputedly over 2,000 years old and has a large hollow centre. There are two garages one of which has a garden store above, and there is also a covered open store/carport. Set in the heart of the garden there is the cottage with a sitting room, kitchen, bedroom and bathroom. The gardens have great charm and consist of a series of rooms including a folly, a bridge spanning a stream, and there is also a gazebo, summerhouse and 2 large greenhouses with peaches, nectarines and apricots. The gardens have to be seen to be truly appreciated.
