Burial in Auld Simon, Lochwinnoch, Scotland. Notes for William Orr: by Bill Brady: In 16 Jul 1800 under his father's will he received sasine of the 20/- land of Kame. There is no mention of Barmochloch and no Clare Constat. On 21 Dec 1802 he was given the new house by his uncle James. Feeling perhaps that the sasine he had received in 1800 was not complete, in 1833 he applied for a precept of sasine from his lawful superior Mrs Margaret Harvey of Castle Semple. She recognised him as nearest and lawful heir to his grandfather and gave a precept of Sasine and Clare Constat to the 20/- land of Kaim and the 10/- land of Barmochloch for a yearly payment of 40.12.0 Scots. Sasine was given in the usual manner on 24 Jul 1833. In the census of 1841 he appears as a farmer in Kame aged 60. In the census of 1851 Kame was let to David Galbraith. Generation 2 (con't) The liner Persia left London on 18th December 1915, and was about 70 miles off the coast of Crete at 1.10pm on the 30th of that month when it was torpedoed without warning by U-38. The target was struck on the port bow and 5 minutes later the boiler blew up and the ship was lost. Of 501 persons aboard there were only 167 survivors, most of whom were picked up by a trawler around 30 hours after the attack. Generation 2 (con't) Notes for William Crawford: William's date of birth is not known. His headstone and various census records give different dates. The year 1796 is used because it appears on two different census records. William was a wool mill owner at Calder Glen. He was in partnership with his older brother John. According to JT Hepburn he was from Ayrshire and began his working life as an apprentice. Andro Crawfurd wrote in the Cairn of Lochwinnoch, about June of 1836, (volume 26, page 348); " The Crawfurds have taken the mill from Colonel Harvey - driven by the Cloke Burn near the millhouse. William goes to collect the raw materiel. Ship it and disembark it at Port Glasgow. Humphray Barbour, Alan Gilmore, Jamie Storie each frequently bring it with their carts up. They sell their yarn to the Kilmarnock carpet manufacturers. They sent their carts every fortnight thither. One of the partners accompany their carts. They employ 22 spinners, piecers, carders, etc forby themselves. Their mill was erected by Mr. Adam in 1814. He sold it to Harvey." One of the products that his mill produced in later years was blankets, one of which is still in the possession of Jessie (Hepburn) Williams. William Crawford and Agnes Orr. They were married on 13 Dec 1845 in Lochwinnoch, Scotland. They had 3 children. i. Unnamed Crawford. She died 1846. She was born on 30 Oct 1846. Notes for Unnamed Crawford: Twin to William died at birth. William Crawford. He was born on 30 Oct 1846. He died on 12 Feb 1880. Burial in Auld Simon, Lochwinnoch, Scotland. 13. i Jessie Brodie Crawford. She was born on 19 Feb 1849 in Lochwinnoch, Scotland. She married James Hepburn. They were married on 01 Aug 1871 in Lochwinnoch, Scotland. She died on 20 Apr 1941 in Lochwinnoch, Scotland. 5. Janet Orr-2 (William Orr-1) [2]. She was born 1812. Christening on 06 Jun 1812 in Lochwinnoch, Renfrewshire, Scotland. She died on 28 Feb 1904. Alexander Holmes is the son of James Holmes and Mary Lyle [2]. He was born Abt. 1805 in Ladymuir, Kilmalcolm. Christening on 10 Dec 1805 in Kilmalcolm, Renfrew, Scotland [5]. Notes for Alexander Holmes: From A Story from Memory by JTO Hepburn; "My grandmother was an energetic old woman. She had a will of iron and many were the stories my mother told when she was in a reminiscent mood of things which had happened in her younger days. As I mentioned earlier she was brought up on a farm, The Kaim, about two miles out the Greenock Road from Lochwinnoch. One of her sisters, Janet Orr, had married Sandy Holmes of Ladymuir Farm about a mile further out the Greenock Road. Sandy was quite a character. He was very fond of a fast riding horse and a fast drink of whiskey every time he came Page 4 of 28 Saturday, January 02, 2010 10:46:22 AM

Generation 2 (con't) Holmes of Ladymuir Farm about a mile further out the Greenock Road. Sandy was quite a character. He was very fond of a fast riding horse and a fast drink of whiskey every time he came to the weekly village fair. After a time the whiskey got the upper hand and work at the farm degenerated even though he had a large family to feed. There were six sons and three daughters, one of the last yet a baby. Some of the Orrs had by that time emigrated to Canada so Janet Orr decided to leave Sandy to his whiskey and do likewise. She and all the family left him and took up residence in her sister Agnes Crawford s house to wait for a ship sailing to Canada. They were there a few weeks when one fair day Sandy Holmes rode up the street with a basket of eggs on his arm. He shouted and swore for his wife to come home but did not get down from his horse. Grandma Crawford had no men folk in the house at the time but picked up her heaviest poker and stood behind her front door, ready for Sandy if he should enter. Sandy seemed to know the character of Agnes Crawford for he confined himself to loud abuse and the battering of the strong door with eggs. Shortly after that the family sailed from the Clyde for Canada. My mother remembers the day well because her cousin, Peter Holmes, the youngest son of the family hadn t a suit of clothes fit for a boy of four. So, he got one of my mother s best velvet frocks and had to go dressed as a little girl. When he came back to Scotland to begin business as a carriage builder in Glasgow when he was a young man my mother didn t mention anything about the velvet frock. Sandy Holmes followed later to Canada and was again the head of the house. He was older and wiser then but I never heard any details of his life in Canada. The Holmes family had their headquarters in Woodstock. In 1954 I met there a Miss Mary Holmes who was still staying in the original Holmes house at 58 Finkle Street. She was a granddaughter of Sandy Holmes and Janet Orr from Ladymuir in Lochwinnoch, Scotland." Alexander Holmes and Janet Orr. They were married on 15 Dec 1833 in Kilmalcolm, Renfrewshire, Scotland. They had 10 children. 14. i. James Holmes [6]. He was born on 04 Nov 1834 in Kilmalcolm, Renfrew, Scotland [7]. Christening on 01 Dec 1834 in Kilmacolm, Renfrew, Scotland [7]. He married Joanna Ross. They were married on 08 Dec 1863 in Oxford Co. Ontario [8]. Janet Holmes [6]. She was born on 14 Jul 1836 in Kilmacolm, Renfrew, Scotland [7]. Christening on 31 Jul 1836 in Kilmacolm, Renfrew, Scotland [7]. Notes for Janet Holmes: Janet appears to have died in infancy. 15. i William Holmes [6]. He was born on 21 Jan 1840 in Kilmacolm, Renfrew, Scotland. He married Ann Reid. They were married on 30 Aug 1870 in Irvine [9]. iv. Janet "Jessie" Holmes [6]. She was born on 21 Jun 1841. Christening on 11 Jul 1841 in Kilmacolm, Renfrew, Scotland. Notes for Janet "Jessie" Holmes: Scottish church records have Jessie as Janet. There was an earlier Janet born 1836 so we assume the name Jessie was the common usage. Jessie was listed as a saleswoman in census reports. She lived in Toronto and did not marry. Page 5 of 28 Saturday, January 02, 2010 10:46:22 AM

Generation 2 (con't) v. Alexander Holmes [6]. He was born on 24 May 1843 in Kilmalcolm, Renfrew, Scotland. Christening on 04 Jul 1843 in Kilmacolm, Renfrew, Scotland. Notes for Alexander Holmes: Alex appears in the 1851 Scottish census but not in the 1861 Canadian census. It is assumed he died between then. 16. vi. John Holmes [6]. He was born on 09 Feb 1845. Christening on 23 Mar 1845 in Kilmacolm, Renfrew, Scotland. He married Margaret Shields. They were married on 01 Apr 1868 in Oxford Co. Ontario. 17. v Robert Holmes [6]. He was born on 23 Mar 1847 in Kilmalcolm, Renfrew, Scotland [7]. Christening on 23 May 1847 in Kilmacolm, Renfrew, Scotland [7]. 18. vi Mary Lyle Holmes [6]. She was born on 20 Jun 1849. He was born on 24 Oct 1851 in Kilmalcolm, Renfrew, Scotland [7]. Christening on 23 Nov 1851 in Kilmacolm, Renfrew, Scotland [7]. He married Hannah Wilson. They were married on 29 Aug 1882 in Largs, Ayrshire, Scotland. 20. x. Agnes Orr Holmes [6]. She was born on 31 May 1854. Christening on 31 Jul 1854 in Kilmacolm, Renfrew, Scotland. She married James Munro. They were married on 06 Feb 1878 in West Zorra, Oxford Co., Ontario, Canada. 6. Mary Orr-2 (William Orr-1). She was born on 05 Nov 1815 in Lochwinnoch, Renfrewshire, Scotland. Christening on 03 Dec 1815 in Lochwinnoch, Renfrewshire, Scotland. She died 1889 in Paris, Ontario. Notes for Mary Orr: Emigrated to Paris, Ontario Andrew Blackwood. He was born 1851 in Woostock, Oxford Co., Ontario. Andrew Blackwood and Mary Orr. They had 4 children. 21. i. Janet Brodie Blackwood. She was born on 17 Oct 1847 in Paris, Ontario. She married James Thomas Bain. They were married on 30 Sep 1874 in Woodstock, Oxford County, Ontario. John Blackwood. He was born on 05 Jan 1850 [10]. Notes for John Blackwood: John shows in the 1852 census as 3 years of age so Jan 1849 would seem to be more correct for a birthdate. i William M Blackwood. He was born 1851. Jemima is a widow aged 72 yrs. Alexander Watt. He was born 1824 in Fenwick, Ayrshire, Scotland. Notes for Alexander Watt: Farmer near Lanark. My mother's father, William Crawford, had one daughter from his first marriage, namely Mary Crawford, who married a Mr Wright of Manchester who had been a clerk in the wool mill of the Crawford's at Lochwinnoch.
