"THE KINGS MILL - MAPEL TON W.l. AUTOGRAPH QUILT OF 1927" The year 1997 is the 1 Ooth Anniersary of the founding of the Women's Institute and the 90th Anniersary of the Kingsmill - Mapleton W.l. Earlier this spring, the group contacted the. Aymer Museum concerning the acceptance of an autograph quilt made by their members in 1927. The quilt was a project begun by members in August of 1927 Nby. which the Institute Treasury might be strengthened." Members spent the next fie months seeking out people to proide 1 0 cents each, for their name to appear on the quilt. A Mrs. Wm. Legg was asked by the members to choose the colour and material for the group project, along with the assistance of a committee. Mrs. Legg reported the selection of a pink and white broadcloth. At their meeting on March 23, 1928, it was oted to embroider the top and "the names written with ink on the bottom." By April, nine blocks had been completed and it was hoped the remainder might be ready for the May meeting. Howeer, excerpts from the W.l. minutes indicate that work on the quilt was still ongoing in March of 1929. The minutes contain mention of Mrs. Legg reporting that due to her continued bad health she was unable to complete the project. The members then oted to appoint Mrs. Jas. Bluemstein as coneyor for the work and the choosing of a committee for the project. In April of 1930 the committee reported they had completed 26 blocks of the 30 required for the quilt. Howeer, there were no names left to place on the remaining blocks. The group oted to try to secure 128 names and the funding to complete the quilt. The final names and amounts (a total of $8.10) were reported at their Noember 12 meeting. A problem concerning the finishing of the. quilt was noted at their meeting of May 7, 1931. They had run out of material to finish the quilt. The only way the quilt could be completed was to send to England to try to match the 'fabri By September of that year the material had not arried. Four years after the quilt was started, it was announced at the December meeting of 1932, that it was completed. The members oted to accept Mrs. Jas. Bleumstein's idea to display the quilt in St. Thomas.

~ ro B, The members agreed the quilt not be sold for any less than $15.00. Miss Myrtle Paddon agreed to make all the necessary arrangements for the display of the quilt. The January meeting of 1932 contained a report that an offer of $12.00 for the quilt had been receied, but not accepted. Two of the members oted.to accept the offer "if still good." The offer must hae been withdrawn because at the March meeting "considerable time was spent discussing the method of disposing of our Autograph Quilt." Mrs. Roy McGregor suggested they sell 100 tickets at 10 cents each within their own community and Mrs. Bleumstein added she felt they should be sold 3 for 25 cents. The report of the draw on the quilt was contained in their minutes of April 7, 1932. The drawing of the winning ticket apparently created quite a stir. Mrs. O. White drew the winning ticket held by Mrs. John Smith. Mrs. Smith was then President of the Kingsmill- Mapleton W.l. The amount raised on the sale of the tickets was $6.1 0 The quilt's story did not end with the sale. Mrs. Smith (nee Mable Bray) later married Mr. Or1ando Chariton in 1960 and gae the quilt to Mrs. Claude Hooer of Kingsmill. Mrs. Hooer passed the quilt onto her daughter, Mrs. Ralph Stoer, Who in tum passed it onto her daughter Mrs. Daid Stoer. In October of 1994, Mrs. Stoer returned the quilt to the Kingsmill - Mapleton W.l. The quilt was reported brought to the Aylmer Museum in 1995, but since the curator was absent that year due to surgical complications, the- matter was postponed until this year. One of my mother's quotations that haunts me still today when things do not go right is: eerything happens for a reason and probably something better is meant to be." The quilt was not meant to come to us until this year, because, this December marks the 20th Anniersary of the Museum in the community and this unique gift from the past is now seen decades old this year. This seems a fitting way for the Museum to begin the next decade, of collecting artifacts from the past and the stories behind them.
