Descendants of George Whitley Generation No. 1 1. GEORGE 10 WHITLEY (GEORGE BENJAMIN 9, BENJAMIN 8, SAMUEL 7, BENJAMIN 6, CAPT. JOHN 5, JOHN 4, THOMAS 3, RICHARD 2, JOHN 1 WHEATLEIGH) was born Abt. 1735, and died Bef. 1800 in probably Montgomery Co., North Carolina. Notes for GEORGE WHITLEY: George Whitley settled on Big Bear Creek, Anson Co., NC, in what is now Stanly County, North Carolina. He was married twice and reared a large family. He and two or three of his sons were soldiers in the American Revolution. Of the four sons listed it is believe that the first two were by his first wife and the second two by his second wife. After his death his second wife, believed to be, Martha Castles married Henry Manuel. Ancestors listed prior to George were taken from the book, " Whitley Families Of North Carolina 1356-1983" I cannot personally attest to their accuracy. Children of GEORGE WHITLEY are: 2. i. GEORGE 11 WHITLEY II, b. Abt. 1760; d. Unknown. ii. NEEDHAM WHITLEY, b. 1762; d. Unknown. More About NEEDHAM WHITLEY: Census: 1790, In Johnston County, NC., along with brother, John. 3. iii. JOHN WHITLEY, b. Abt. 1772; d. 1863. 4. iv. WILLIAM WHITLEY, b. December 1775, North Carolina; d. March 04, 1890, Stanly County, North Carolina. Generation No. 2 1

2. GEORGE 11 WHITLEY II (GEORGE 10, GEORGE BENJAMIN 9, BENJAMIN 8, SAMUEL 7, BENJAMIN 6, CAPT. JOHN 5, JOHN 4, THOMAS 3, RICHARD 2, JOHN 1 WHEATLEIGH) was born Abt. 1760, and died Unknown. Notes for GEORGE WHITLEY II: George Whitley II married twice and had a large family by each marriage. He was a Baptist minister and was a pastor in the Bear Creek Association of Primitive Baptist. He seems to have been pastor, at one time, of Meadow Creek Baptist Church in Stanly County, North Carolina The Jacob Whitley papers mention a daughter that was bitten by a dog and died of Rabies and a son, George Whitley, Jr. ( III). Other records relate that a daughter, Fannie Robins, died June 23, 1858. Census Records would indicate the following to also be sons of George II. - Needham, b. 1780, Exodus, & Titus. These are all on the 1810 Montgomery County Census living next door to each other in Dist. West. Children of GEORGE WHITLEY II are: 5. i. NEEDHAM 12 WHITLEY, b. 1780; d. June 11, 1862, Stanly Co., North Carolina. 6. ii. GEORGE WHITLEY III, b. December 28, 1787; d. June 23, 1858. 3. JOHN 11 WHITLEY (GEORGE 10, GEORGE BENJAMIN 9, BENJAMIN 8, SAMUEL 7, BENJAMIN 6, CAPT. JOHN 5, JOHN 4, THOMAS 3, RICHARD 2, JOHN 1 WHEATLEIGH) 1 was born Abt. 1772, and died 1863. He married JANE HATHCOCK Abt. 1810, daughter of BENJAMIN HATHCOCK. She was born Abt. 1795, and died Unknown. More About JOHN WHITLEY: Census: 1790, In Johnston County. NC. Children of JOHN WHITLEY and JANE HATHCOCK are: 7. i. ALLISON 12 WHITLEY, b. SUZANNE WHITLEY, d. Unknown. 4. WILLIAM 11 WHITLEY (GEORGE 10, GEORGE BENJAMIN 9, BENJAMIN 8, SAMUEL 7, BENJAMIN 6, CAPT. JOHN 5, JOHN 4, THOMAS 3, RICHARD 2, JOHN 1 2

WHEATLEIGH) was born December 1775 in North Carolina, and died March 04, 1890 in Stanly County, North Carolina. He married MARTHA HATHCOCK Abt. 1814 in North Carolina, daughter of BENJAMIN HATHCOCK. She was born 1776 in North Carolina, and died September 24, 1880 in Stanly Co., North Carolina. Notes for WILLIAM WHITLEY: There is some contradiction as to the exact date of William "Uncle Billy" Whitley's birthdate. It is said that the family Bible, which had his birthdate in it went west with one of his children. The Jacob Whitley papers state that he was born in 1775 and that is what is on his tombstone, other sources point to the year 1772. On March 13, 1890, the Stanly Observer of Albermarle, North Carolina, wrote a long memorial to "Uncle Billy" Whitley stating that he died March 3, 1890, at the age of 117 years of there abouts which indicates a birthdate of December 1772. Uncle Billy was said to have been a 114 years old at the time of the July 4, 1887, celebration which calculates to a year of birth being 1772. At the time of his death, Uncle Billy had in his possession several family heirlooms including a pocket knife, a tax reciept of colonial days, and a musket. In its tribute to Uncle Billy, the Stanly Observer stated, " Mr Whitley's moral character was excellent, never having fallen into excess of any kind, and his habits of industry and economy acquired in his primitive days clung to him with tenacity to the last moment of time... His home was in Furr township, Stanly County. His remains were deposited in the Whitley family buring ground not far from his old homestead... In physique he was rather below the average." Billy is said to have remembered his father and two brothers coming home from the Revolutionary War, bring their guns with them. It is said that Uncle Billy attended the Whitley Family Reunion in 1889 at which time he exhibited his third set of natural teeth which were as smooth and white as baby teeth. Uncle Billy enjoyed the fuss made over him and he never tired of having his teeth examined or telling how old he was. On November 18, 1975, the Stanly News and Press reprinted an account of the 4th of July celebration held at Rocky River Springs at which, Uncle Billy was the stellar attraction at the ripe old age of 114. "It was in the year 1887, I think, and as usual there was a tremendous crowd on the grounds. Rev. C.H. Martin, was then a young preacher charming 3

everyone with his silver tounge eloquence and matchless oratory. He was present that day and made a great address. Mr Martin almost went wild over Uncle Billy, and held him up on a high platform and proudly exhibited the aged man.... He (Uncle Billy) shot that same old musket on that 4th of July, standing on the platform, supported by Mr. Martin. When the thundering report reverberated all through the hills, cheer after cheer went through the air and Rev. Charles H. Martin's voice could be heard above all the others. People laughted and wept and prayed. It was then, with Mr. Martin's arm about him, that Uncle Billy said he had a message to deliver to the people. He was sure he would never be there another 4th, and wanted them to remember his last words. Then in a solemly tender, earnestly warning way, with his feeble old hands stretched out in loving benediction, he said, "Prepare to meet thy God." The November 18, 1975, article commented further about him: "Uncle Billy had never ridden a train, nor been many miles from his home. He lived through the inauguration of every President of the United States up to that time...from Washington on down. He always wore home spun and woven clothes... probably never bought a suit of clothes in his life." Uncle Billy was a member of the Meadow Creek Baptist Church, Stanly County, North Carolina. * * * * * * * * THE MUSKET According to Dr. D. P. Whitley the musket, that Uncle Billy displayed, and is often mentioned, is the same gun that Uncle Billy's father brought back from the Revolutionary War. Gen. Washington purchased from France, a number of the Charlesville muskets, model of 1763, for use by the Continental troops. It has the manufacturers's inscription on it, and there is no question about its origin. This same gun is now in the possession of his family. More About WILLIAM WHITLEY: Burial: Unknown, Whitley/Huneycutt Cemetery, ( Old Barbee Cemetery) Cabarrus County, Carolina 2 Notes for MARTHA HATHCOCK: Martha Hathcock, daughter of Benjamin Hathcock, first married John Dick and 4

they had three children. She then married William "Uncle Billy" Whitley and they had eight children. William and Martha's children were all born near what is now Big Lick, Stanly County, North Carolina. Martha died September 24, 1880, in Stanly County at the age of 104. When she died, Martha was wrapped in a winding sheet which was scalloped all around the edge before she was placed in her casket for burial. Martha and Billy are buried side by side in the old Barbee Cemetery in Cabarrus County, North Carolina. More About MARTHA HATHCOCK: Burial: Unknown, Whitley/Huneycutt Cemetery, ( Old Barbee Cemetery) Cabarrus County, Carolina 2 Children of WILLIAM WHITLEY and MARTHA HATHCOCK are: 9. i. EDMUND 12 WHITLEY, b. Abt. 1815, North Carolina; d. Unknown. 10. ii. WILLIAM MARION WHITLEY, JR., b. Abt. 1817, Montgomery, now Stanly Co., North Carolina; d. DAVIDSON WHITLEY, b. May 06, 1830, North Carolina; d. June 13, 1916, Cabaras Co., North Carolina. Generation No. 3 5. NEEDHAM 12 WHITLEY (GEORGE 11, GEORGE 10, GEORGE BENJAMIN 9, BENJAMIN 8, SAMUEL 7, BENJAMIN 6, CAPT. JOHN 5, JOHN 4, THOMAS 3, RICHARD 2, JOHN 1 WHEATLEIGH) 3 was born 1780, and died June 11, 1862 in Stanly Co., North Carolina. He married SARAH SIDES. She was born 1793, and died May 29, 1877 in Stanly Co., North Carolina. Notes for NEEDHAM WHITLEY: Unsure of Needham's father. It could be Needham, b. 1762, George II, b. 1760, or another unknown child of George, b. 1735. Most people seem to believe that he was the son of Needham. I am inclined to believe that he was the son of George II. Due to where they lived in Montgomery Co., and the people that they were connected to through marriage, mainly the Cagle Family. This is pure speculation on my part as no proof has been found. We do know that he was a nephew of William "Uncle Billy" Whitley, born 1775. More About NEEDHAM WHITLEY: Burial: Unknown, Vanhoy Family Cemetery, Stanly Co., North Carolina 5

JOHN 5, JOHN 4, THOMAS 3, RICHARD 2, JOHN 1 WHEATLEIGH) 5 was born October 21, 1811 in Montgomery Co., North Carolina, and died Abt. 1900 in Fannin Co., Texas 5. He married (1) MARY REBECCA CAGLE Abt. 1833, daughter of CHARLIE CAGEL and ELIZABETH SPRINGER. She was born October 23, 1810 in North Carolina, and died October 14, 1858 in Stanly Co., North Carolina. He married (2) SINA RUSHING 6 January 07, 1860 in Union Co., North Carolina 7, daughter of WILLIAM RUSHING and MARY "MARAB". She was born 1828 in Union Co, North Carolina, and died Abt. 1866 in Stanly Co., North Carolina. He married (3) ELIZABETH BELINDA HUNEYCUTT April 18, 1867 in Stanly Co., North Carolina, daughter of EDMUND HUNEYCUTT and MALITIA "LUCY". She was born March 03, 1838 in Montgomery Co., North Carolina, and died 1917 in Grayson Co., Texas. Notes for NEEDHAM WHITLEY: According to letters written by Needham, which are located in the National 10

Archives, Ft Worth, Texas, he states: That he was born about 22 miles west of Troy, Montogomery (now Stanly) County, North Carolina. Copies of three different letters were found at the Archives. In two of the letters he gives his birth year as 1811 and one letter as 1813, so I have stayed with the 1811 year as his date of birth. He is listed as Needham, Jr. on early Census records. Needham was married three times and was said to have 21 children. In the winter of 1870, Needham, wife Elizabeth, and children: John, Sannette (Assinith), Marab, Elias "Pete", and William Sherman along with Needham's daughter, Rebecca and her husband, John Huneycutt, and their children, (Lem Burris and LeJeanus Huneycutt) moved from Stanly County, North Carolina, to Red River County in east Texas. Other North Carolina families probably made the journey also. They journeyed on a flat bottom boat from North Carolina, down the Atlantic coast, around the Florida peninsula, back up the Gulf coast to the mouth of the Mississippi River, up the Mississippi to the mouth of the Red River and then up the Red River to the mouth of the Big Cypress (which was navigable at that time to Jefferson, Texas). They got off the boat at Jefferson, Texas, put their possessions on an ox cart and walked to their destination in Red River County. They initially settled in Red River County near Detroit, Texas. Two years later they moved to Cooke County, Texas. The Texas towns of Blossom and Detroit were used as their post office address part of the time. Two years later in the fall of 1872, four more of Needham's children and their families made the journey from North Carolina to Texas. They included: Thomas, his wife Martha and their nine known children; Needham, and his wife Wincie and four children; Sylvia, and her husband, Noah Huneycutt and two children; and Daniel Pressley. On September 9, 1875, Needham Whitley of Cooke County, Texas, purchased 160 acres of land in Grayson County, Texas, (which is adjacent to Cooke Co.) on the waters of Big Mineral Bayou for the sum of $1000. 11

In August 1896, Needham Whitley, attested in an affidavit that was notarized and signed with his mark to the Dawes Commission, Indian Territory. In this affidavit he attested that his age was 84 years, and to the fact that the children of Susannah Morton Whitley were of Cherokee decent through her mother, Elizabeth "Betsy" Brumbelow, and through their grandfather, Edward "Judge" Brumbelow, who was 1/2 Cherokee Indian by blood. The names of the children of Susannah Morton Whitley were: Hiram C. Whitley, Ezekiel Thomas Whitley, William H. A. Whitley, John Vincent Whitley, Susan M. A. Whitley Brasher, and George F. Whitley. Susannah Morton Whitley was the wife of William Marion Whitley, Jr. (This affidavit can be found in the National Archives, Ft Worth, Texas. Source - Cherokee 5176-5320, Re # 5243 App. Enrollment, M1650 Roll 52.) Susannah Morton Whitley was the daughter of Ezekiel Morton and Elizabeth Brumbelow, and William Marion Whitley, Jr. was the son of William "Uncle Billy" Whitley and Martha Hathcock.. Telitha Whitley Huneycutt's, child #9 of Rebecca and Needham, death certificate on May 30, 1935, in Stanly Co., NC, gave her mother's maiden name as Mary Cagle.
