Welcome to the 42nd GTM Germany Travel Mart The German National Tourist Board welcomes you to the evening event accompanying the biggest marketplace for tourism in Germany. You are invited to share your GTM experiences on Twitter using the hashtag #gtm16. Petra Hedorfer Chief Executive Officer German National Tourist Board Ladies and Gentlemen, welcome to the state capital Magdeburg, welcome to our city, in the heart of Germany and right in the middle of Europe! The federal state of Saxony-Anhalt is deemed as the heartland of German history, and also its state capital looks back on 1,200 years of eventful and colourful history. In particular, it was the first Roman German Emperor Otto the Great and the inventor and diplomat Otto von Guericke who significantly shaped the fortunes of our city and made it known far beyond its borders. Today, the state capital Magdeburg is a European city between tradition and the modern era. This can be seen and experienced in an exciting combination of culture, history and urban life, which in turn, forms the basis of our candidacy for the European Capital of Culture 2025. I wish you a successful GTM as well as a pleasant stay in Saxony-Anhalt with lots of new impressions, interesting encounters and perhaps new friends! Between 1962 and 1970, the northern section of the street was rebuilt as a Magistrale, a socialist-style high street with buildings made form prefabricated concrete slabs. 4 Cathedral Church St. Sebastian The foundation stone of the Cathedral Church St. Sebastian was laid by Archbishop Gero in 1015 and in 1169, the building was consecrated as a Romanesque basilica. After a fire the building was transformed into a Gothic hall church in the 14th and 15th centuries. Nowadays, visitors can now still admire the Romanesque style of the buildings original outline, twin tower façade and transept. 5 The Green Citadel of Magdeburg Alongside Magdeburg s multitude of impressive historic buildings, another attraction has been fascinating visitors to the city since 2005. THE GREEN CITADEL OF MAGDEBURG is the name that Friedensreich Hundertwasser gave to one of his last architectural projects. It was later destroyed by a city fire and then re-erected as the first Gothic cathedral building on German soil in 1209. Magdeburg s landmark boasts a monumental interior containing internationally renowned original exhibits representing nearly all periods of art history, for example the original tomb of Emperor Otto I and his first wife Edith. 8 Romanesque Art Centre The Road of Romanesque runs through Saxony-Anhalt in the shape of figure eight. The route links 80 testimonies to Romanesque architecture over a length of 1,000 kilometres. Magdeburg is the start and end point of the northern and southern itinerary. The capital of Saxony-Anhalt imperial city and favourite palatinate of Otto the Great set up the Romanesque Art Centre directly adjacent to Magdeburg Cathedral to impart to visitors information about worthwhile destinations along the Road of Romanesque. The exhibition in the Info Centre gives insights into the medieval world of itinerant emperors, knights, monasteries and convents and ordinary people.
