Census of England & Wales April 1841 The whole parish of Isle Abbotts (Record Office ref MC320) is reproduced below excluding the village of Stewley which then formed part of ecclesiastical parish of Isle Abbotts. Stewley had 21 dwellings with 58 males and 52 females total 110. Isle Abbotts on its own: No of Schedules 62 No of Males 154 No of Females 149 Population 303 The 1841 census was the first detailed census carried out in England & Wales. It did not record house names nor exact place of birth of inhabitants. All villagers were shown as born within county of Somerset without exception. The first eight dwellings were recorded as hamlet of Woodlands, all other dwellings as Isle Abbots. The only way to put families into specific houses is to refer to the Tithe Map of 1842. I have interpreted and noted the Tithe Map (TM) ref nos in final column. The Heads of household are shown in Bold. The Enumerator s writing is scarcely legible today and accuracy is not guaranteed. If in doubt, a question mark is shown.
