Notes for Leonard Dozier: While his brothers settled elsewhere, Leonard stayed in Madison County, apparently on his father's estate in the Otter Creek area. In 1790, James Dozier's executor (either Leonard or Zachariah) sold land south of Reid's Mill to Henry Brown. Six years later, October 29, 1796, Leonard sold land on Otter Creek to Henry Stephenson Brown and John Brown, sons of Caleb Brown. At the estate sale of Benjamin Harris of Madison Co., Ky., recorded December 5, 1797, Leonard Dozier purchased an old piece of plow, one bed, other furniture and one red cow. Census Records 1800 -- Madison Co. Tax List 1810 -- Madison Co. 199 Leonard was listed as a purchaser at the estate sale of John White Sr. on Oct. 7 and 8, 1825. Others making purchases that day included Peter Dozier, Mark Million, Zack Crew, Thomas Fowler, Samuel Portwood, Reuben Munday, Richard Dozier and David Crews. 1830 -- Madison Co. 139 -- In the 1830 Census, Leonard is listed on the same page as Peter Dozier, Richard Fowler, John Million and Ambrose Christopher. Richard is listed in the 1830, 1840, 1850 and 1860 Censuses for Madison Co. In 1830, he has three sons, two daughters and three young female slaves in the household. In 1850 (Dist. # 2, Image 62), he is listed as a farmer with $1,500 in real estate. His is 57 and Margaret is 55. Children are Mary Ann, 28, Rebecca, 24, Bradford (a farmer), 23, James, 22, Fortunatus, 19, Alfred, 16, and Thomas 11. The family is listed near Gentry and Parks families who lived on Otter Creek. (In 1849, Richard Dozier was a witness the estate inventory of Merrill Parke.) Richard is listed on the 1860 Census as a farmer with real estate valued at $1,500 and personal property worth $1,950. His wife, Margaret, is listed as a native of Nelson Co., Ky. Richard's listing is adjacent to that of Susannah Parks, apparently the widow of Merrill Parks. The next page lists son, William Parks and his wife, Mary Crews. This suggests that Richard lived in the Red House Road, Otter Creek area. Richard is listed in the 1870 Census in the Crooked Creek Precinct of Estill Co., Ky., as 79 years old. Also listed in the household are his wife, Margaret, 76, Rebecca, 30, and Thomas, 20, who is described as a "cripple." Richard's real estate is valued at $1,400 and his personal property at $700.

However, the entry has a line drawn through it, and "Dead" is written after his name. The head of the household is Mary (Dozier) Boone and living with her is sister Rebecca and brother Thomas. "Susan Moberly Dozier died sometime before the memory of my grandfather, Greenup Dozier, (he was born in 1860) nor could I find anyone who did remember her. However, I have a description of Yeatman from several persons..... from Roy Dozier, his sisters Leota Becker, and from Zettie Anderson and from my grandfather, Greenup Dozier. Yateman was about six feet tall and of medium build. He had dark brown hair and beard. His eyes were a bluish grey with gold flecks. His hair and beard were both wavy and only slightly grey at his death. He wore his beard short. He was a very kind man and between Thanksgiving and Christmas he would distribute food and clothing to the poor in the community. After the slaves were freed, he still kept and cared for those who wished to stay with him. My grandfather said he remembered at least two women and three men and several children stayed with him.

Yeatman was a very wealthy man but a combination of the Civil War and a generous heart depleted his finances before his death.
