Generation No. 1 1. [12109] John 1 Flood, born 1695, in England, died 1782, in Buckingham Co., VA, buried in beneath Baptist Church, Billwyn, VA. He married (1) Agnes Payne about 1762, in Buckingham Co., VA. He married (2) Davis about 1754, in England. Davis was born in of Gloucester Co., VA, died before 1762. The earliest documented record of the immigrant, John Flood, was a land patent in Albemarle Co., Virginia. On March 3, 1760, for the sum of 30 shillings, he was granted 295 acres of land, among them the south branches of Hunt's Creek, near the church. When Buckingham Co. was formed in 1762, the Flood land was included, and the nearby church later became Buckingham Baptist Church, which is still standing and in regular use today. From 1771 to 1774, John Flood was an officer of that church serving as Sexton. A plaque donated by the descendants of his son, Henry, is mounted on the wall of the church and states that John and his wife were buried beside the church, with a later addition built over the graves. The absence of wills, marriage records, and other legal records, due to the devastating Court House fire of 1869, makes research in Buckingham Co. very difficult. Records that were not stored in the Court House, family tradition and a little logic have been used in establishing relationships in John Flood's family. According to family tradition, Captain John Flood, upon retiring from the British Navy, moved his family from England, to the state Virginia, in America. He was born in 1694, and was 60 years old, before his first child was born. His first wife, Davis, bore at least three sons. Some researchers give Ms. Davis' first name as Agatha. However, no basis for this has been determined. Sons, Henry (born 1755), and John (born 1757), were probably born in England, and possibly Thomas (born 1760), as well. John's wife was dead by 1762, when he married for the second time, to Agnes Payne, at the age of 68. Son, Noah was born in 1763, and in the 1764 Buckingham Co. List of Tithes, John was listed as "Patroler", with 200 acres of land. Three more sons, Moses (born 1765), Joshua A. (born 1772), and Joseph (born 1774), were born by 1773 and 1774, when he was listed as a tythe, on John Barnard's list of tythables. Twins, William and Mary (born 1777), and his last son, Benjamin (born 1780), had been added to the family by 1782 when personal property and land tax lists showed that he owned three horses, six cattle and 200 acres of land. The above was written by Beth Flood. Excerpts from letters written in April 1959 to B.R. Fitzgerald from Joel W. Flood, Judge of the Fifth Judicial Circuit of Virginia, states the following:- "John Flood, Sr. was born in the year of 1694. He was an Englishman, and belonged to the British Navy. He came to this country as a Man-Of-War in 1754, landing in Glouster County, Virginia. There he met a Miss Davis, whose charm proved more captivating to him than his sailor life, and after a few months, at an advanced age of 60, they were married. From what I have heard, I judge that he was wild in his early life. He was remarkable for honesty, information, and honor, and universally esteemed where known. After marriage he moved to Buckingham County, www.hill-ky.org ed@hill-ky.org 3

and settled near the Buckingham Church, of which for years he was Clerk, discharging his duties with true manly zeal. By his first wife (Miss Davis) he had five children, viz: Henry, John, William, Mary and Thomas. When Thomas was a few weeks old, the mother died, leaving to the husband's care five young children. Afterwards, he married Miss Payne by whom he had eight sons, and two daughters!". The Richmond Times Dispatch of Saturday, December 4, 1965 carried an article written by Genevieve Agee, concerning what was once known as "Buckingham Olde Church." It is located on U.S. Route #15, and is the one founded by Captain John Flood, being on his farm near Dillwyn, Virginia. Captain John Flood and his wife Agatha, and their daughter Mary, were buried under the church to protect their graves from the Indians. Their graves, marked by stones, are visible under the church. The original building was added to in the 1830's and again in 1965, the dedication being planned for the spring of 1966. Children of John Flood and Agnes Payne: 2 i. John, his father and John's second wife, Agnes Payne, had another set of twins named William and Mary. A letter written by Joel Walker Flood to his cousin Frances (Fannie) from his home in Appomattox, VA on February 20, 1913, in response to her inquiry regarding www.hill-ky.org ed@hill-ky.org 4

Thomas Flood, her great grandfather, states: "Your great grandfather and my great-great grandfather John Flood's first wife was a Miss Davis from Glouschester County, VA He had five children by his first wife. Major Henry Flood (was the eldest-my great grandfather, John Flood was your great grandfather), then came twins, William and Mary after the Protestant King and Queen of England. Your great grandfather was named Thomas Flood. When the war between Great Britian and the States commenced, John Flood called his sons up who wre old enough to go into the Continental Army, and told them that he was an Englishman, that he had been in His Majesty's service and was very glad that he was too old to take up any part of the war, but that they were Americans and to fight for their country. His second wife was a Payne who was his housekeeper. He had 9 children by his second marriage. Had twins by this marriage as William by the first, was killed in the Continental Army and Mary died. He named these twins William and Mary." iii. Mary Flood, born about 1756. 10 iv. Noah served in the Revolutionary War in 1781, including the battle of Yorktown. He was wounded in his right hand, resulting in permenent disablity. The bible record which is the basis for Sarah's date of birth is difficult to read. It could be June 3, 1764 rather than June 2, 1764. Notes for family of Noah Flood and Sarah Fuqua: The marriage date for Noah and Sarah is based on his Revolutionary War papers. Info from DAR book Plymouth Library John Flood 1758-8/16/1826 m. Mary Fuqua "Sol VA" "A Revolutionary Worthy" according to his 1826 obituary in the Richmond VA Whig. Came from the old family of Fuqua living in the lower part of Buckingham County, VA She was a relation of Colonel Joseph Fuqua of Buckingham. Children of John Flood and Mary Fuqua: i. [28685] John Flood III. According to Gladys Warren Willis, John was an Episcopalian minister. He did missionary work for the poor in Washington D.C. He was very good looking. Marguerite DuPont (of the famous DuPont family) had a crush on him. She tried to use her money to influence him. 47 ii. [12144] William Flood, born 1776, in of "Prospect Hill" in now Appomatox Co., VA, died 1818, in Virginia. iii. [12143] Anna Davies Flood, born about 1778, in Virginia, died after 1851, in "Wildway" formerly "Prospect Hill", Appomattox Co, VA. She married William Stevens 1798. William Stevens died 1845. He had been a Revolutionary soldier. He was not of military age when he went into Service. His brother John was a volunteer, but for family reasons wished to be at home, so William took his place and served three years as a private. He never would ask for a pension, and always said he had fought for Liberty, not for a pension...he sespised a mean act. 48 iv. [12146] Mary Flood, born 1 Dec 1789, in of Buckingham (later Appomattox) Co., VA, died 2 Jun 1851, in "Wildway" formerly "Prospect Hill", Appomattox Co, VA. 11. [12130] Thomas 2 Flood (John 1 ), born 1760, in Buckingham Co., VA, died 1811, in Wilson Co., TN. He married (1) Elizabeth Gale 13 Jan 1787, in Isle of Wight Co., VA. Elizabeth Gale died before 1791, in Isle of Wight Co., VA. He married (2) Judith Strother 1790, in Culpeper Co., VA. She was the daughter of French Strother and Lucy Coleman. Judith Strother was born about 1766, in North Carolina, died 1844, in Smith Co., TN. Thomas first bought land in Wilson Co., Tennessee on February 8, 1800, and lived the rest of his life there. Thomas was born in Buckingham Co, not Isle of Wight, but that is where he married his first wife, Elizabeth Gale, and where their daughter, Mary Thomas Flood was born. His oldest daughter, with Judith, was Nancy Strother Flood, and I think one census gave her birthplace as North Carolina, so it seems to me that after the death of his first wife, in 1791, he went to NC, where he met and married Judith, had a child, and then moved to Tenn. In 1802, he is on a list of voters, for Smith Co, and by 1804, he is on the tax list for Wilson Co. He died there, in 1811 (probate records), not 1815. [Note from Beth Flood] War Department Records indicate: Thomas Flood served as a Private in Captain John Steed's Company in a Detachment of Virginia Brigade, commanded by Colonel Febiger. His name appears on the Company Muster Roll for the month of January 1780 and shows his term of enlistment expired on February 29, 1780. His name also appears on the Company Pay Roll for the period ended March 17, 1780. Children of Thomas Flood and Elizabeth Gale: 49 i. NOAH FLOOD Fulton Telegraph, Missouri, USA 1873 The community has for some time been expecting the sad news which came on Tuesday evening. The physicians and friends of Rev. Noah Flood had, several days ago lost all hope of his recovery from the disease which has confined to his bed for nearly six months. His powerful constitution at length yielded, and he breathed his last on Monday, the 11th inst., at 8 o'clock, pm. Rev.
