to Sir Robert Cecil when Secretary of State, and afterwards as Clerk to the Privy Coucil, received a knighthood 1617 and was appointed, in 1618, Secretary of State to the King, who employed him in the most important affairs, and settled, in 1620, a pension of L1,000 a year upon him beyond his salary. Sir George, however, becoming a Roman Catholic, voluntarily resigned his post. The King continued him, nevertheless in the Privy Council, and having made him large grants of land in Ireland, raided him to the peerage of that kingdom, in 1624, as Baron Baltimore, in the County of Longford. Whilst Secretary of State, his lordship obtained a grant in the province of Avalon, in Newfoundland, with the most extensive privileges, and expended L25,000 in the settlement thereof. This place he visited thrice in the reign of King James I, but on account of the French encroachments, and also because of the very severe climate in winter, he abandoned it altogether; whereupon he obtained from King Charles I, a patent of Maryland, to him and his heirs for ever, with the same title and royalties as in Avalon, to hold in common soccage as of the manor of Windsor, paying yearly as acknowledgement to the Crown, two Indian Arrows at Windsor Castle, upon Easter Tuesday, and the fifth part of the gold and silver ore. Notes for Leonard Calvert: Second son of George Calvert, brother to Cecil, and governor of Maryland from 1633 to 1647. He led the first expedition from England to the new colony; established good relations with the local Indians; selected the site of the capital at St. Mary's City; and attempted to execute the orders and designs of his brother amidst the almost constant hostility of the Virginians. He was out of the colony for almost two years following Richard Ingle's invasion of Maryland in 1645, but finally restored proprietary authority and died soon after. He made Margaret Brent, his sister-in-law, his executrix. CALVERT, LEONARD (ca. 1606-1647) BORN: ca. 1606 in England; second son.

Papenfuse, et al., A Biographical Dictionary of the Maryland Legislature, 1635-1789, Vol. I, A-H, (Baltimore: Johns Hopkins University Press, 1979), p. 190. Proprietary Governor of Maryland, 1634-1647, born in England, 1607; died in Maryland, 9 June, 1647. He was the second son of George Calvert, first

to protect the colony of Avalon against the depredations of French cruisers. In 1633, his brother, the second Lord Baltimore, appointed him Governor of Maryland and sent him in charge of an expedition to make a settlement. Two vessels, the Ark and Dove, carrying over 300 settlers sailed from the harbour of Cowes, 22 November, 1633, arriving at point Comfort, Virginia, 24 February, 1634. On 27 March they landed at what is now St. Mary's, then the site of an Indian village, and they began the work of establishing a settlement. The Indians received them kindly and sold them the land. Clayborne of the Virginia colony had established a trading post on Kent Island, which was in the domain of Maryland. After the settlement at St. Mary's this trade was continued. Trouble arose and Clayborne went to England to lay is claims before the king, but was informed that the island belonged to Lord Baltimore. The governor at once took possession of the island and established a settlement there. The troubles in England following 1640 were responsible for disturbances in Maryland. In 1643 Governor Calvert went to England to discuss policies with the proprietor, leaving the affairs of the colony in charge of acting Governor Brent. At the close of 1643 Captain Ingle appeared at St. Mary's with a vessel commissioned by Parliament. The ship was captured and the oath against Parliament was tendered the crew. Ingle escaped. When Governor Calvert returned he found the colony distracted by factions. Ingle returned the following year, and, with the assistance of the Protestants and Clayborne, the Catholics, including Governor Calvert, were driven into Virginia. An oath of submission was tendered but not one Catholic took it. The Jesuit priests were sent to England. A state of anarchy prevailed for two years. Calvert returned in 1646 and captured St. Mary's, and in the following year Kent island. he favored the right of initiative in legislation by the colonists and won for them this privilege. In the difficulty between the proprietor and the Jesuits, he sympathized with the latter and prevented a rupture between them. In 1890 the state of Maryland erected a monument to him and his wife at St. Mary's. J.E. HAGERTY Transcribed by M. He married Elizabeth Doyne Abt. 1690 in St. Marys, Maryland, daughter of Robert Doyne and Mary Stone. She was born Abt. 1670 in Stafford County, Virginia, and died Unknown.

Notes for George Calvert: There are few records on this George Calvert. James Walter Thomas, page 53, Chronicles of Colonial Maryland states: 'William Calvert left sons Charles, George, and Richard and a daughter Elizabeth', but he gives no authority for the statement.... There is ample proof for Charles Calvert, for the fourth son, Richard, and for the daughter Elizabeth, but no proof for the son George. Being in the county of Stafford, VA at the same time that Charles Calvert was there it is quite natural that the two shoulb be thought brothers, although their names were never found linked together. Every Prince William County, VA Calvert claims descent from the first Lord Baltimore through this George. Neither is George firmly attached to the following generation. Again it is quite natural to suppose that his alleged sons, John and George, did truly belong to him since they were in the same locality in Stafford county in which he lived, but no actual proof of the relationship has been found. George Calvert's name disappears from the record books of Stafford county before 1700. There is a lapse of three years in the records from 1695 to 1698. It may be that during that period he died as his name was not found later. The record books from 1708 to 1730 also disappeared many years ago, making further proof difficult if not impossible. All the above from Ella Foy O'Gorman, Descendants of Virginia Calverts. More About George Calvert and Elizabeth Doyne: Marriage: Abt. 1690, St. Marys, Maryland Children of George Calvert and Elizabeth Doyne are: + 7 i. John 7 Calvert, born Abt. 1692 in Stafford County, Virginia; died Abt. 1731 in Prince William County, Virginia. 8 ii. George Calvert, died Unknown. 9 iii. George Calvert, died Unknown. Generation No. 7 7. John 7 Calvert (George 6, William 5, Leonard 4, George 3, Leonard 2, George 1 ) was born Abt. 1692 in Stafford County, Virginia, and died Abt. 1731 in Prince William County, Virginia. He married Elizabeth Harrison Abt. 1711, daughter of Benjamin Harrison and Elizabeth Burwell. She was born Abt. 1693 in Stafford County, Virginia, and died Abt. 1723. Notes for John Calvert: From Descendants of Virginia Calverts by Ella Foy O'Gorman

John Calvert lived in Stafford County, Virginia, where, December 28, 1722, he and Jacob Gibson obtained a warrant for laying out 306 acres of land in Stafford County. April 6, 1723, they returned a survey under hand of Capt. Thomas Hooper, Dec'd., late Surveyor. July 18, 1724, he and his friend and partner, Jacob Gibson, were granted the 306 acres of land. The land was situate between the branches of Powell's Creek and the North Run of Quantico Creek in Stafford County...'to a small oak on a Ridge on the South East side of Neil Cobley's Branch' (State Land Office, Bk A, page 45) "An old Stafford county Rent Roll of 1723, preserved in the Huntington Library, CA, shows that John Calvert was taxed at that time on 100 acres of land and his brother George Calvert was taxed on 417 acres. [also on CD 136] The next Rent Roll, undated but before 1738 (John Gosling was taxed for 200 acres) shows that John Calvert was dead and his 100 acres plus the 306 acres named in the land warrant of 1724, were taxed to his eldest son, George Jr. (called George Calvert Jr to distinguish him from his uncle) The 1738-1739 rent roll continued to show George Calvert Jr. taxed on the above amount. In 1739, Prince William County was formed from Stafford County, and on May 6, 1739, George Calavert, Junior, sold land 'formerly granted to Jacob Gibson and John Calvert, dec'd. father of the aforesaid George Calvert, junior.' Ann, wife of George Jr, signed the deed with him. Though there is no documentary proof that Jacob Calvert was a son of John Calvert, the many records in Prince William county in which the names of George Calvert, Jr, and Jacob Calvert apperar together adds weight to the conclusion. In the same way, it is assumed that the wife of Jacob Calvert was a daughter of Richard Crupper. On 27 Nov 1753, Jacob Calvert brought suit against Richard Crupper and the suit ran on until the May court 1756 when it was dismissed because the parties had come to an agreement. (PWm Orders 1, p 314ff) 1753, a lease to Jacob Calvert was witnessed by Benjamin Grayson and John Rookard. 1754, Jacob Calvert was one of the appraiseres of the estate of William Farrow. 1757, Feb 20, Church Wardens of Dettingen Parish bound John Crupper orphan of Robert Crupper to Jacob Calvert, his mother Elizabeth Crupper consenting. 1762, George Calvert and Jacob Calvert were executors for the estate of Richard Crupper and proved the will at the Feb Court by the oaths of Thomas Machem, John Colvert [note-a frequent misreading of Calvert] and Nathaniel Overall. [PWm Orders, 4, p 58] 1767 Jacob Calvert was paid for building a Vestry house at Quantico. Jacob Calvert died before 1 June 1772 when Sarah Calvert and Francis Calvert were Executors of the will of Jacob Calvert. The rocord book in which the will was recorded is amon the missing Prince William Records. The bond began"...we, Sarah Calvert, Francis Calvert, William Farrow, and George
