Descendants of Philipp and Marianne Mendheim Generation 1 1. PHILIPP 1 MENDHEIM was born on 17 Nov 1777 in Prussia. He died on 27 Jan 1834 in Cüstrin, Prussia. He married (MARJANE) MARIANNE MOSES. She was born in 1794 in Prussia. She died on 10 Aug 1862 in Manhattan, New York County, New York (198 East Broadway). Philipp Mendheim and (Marjane) Marianne Moses had the following children: i. EMIL 2 MENDHEIM was born about 1817 in Prussia. He died on 07 Apr 1889 in New York. Notes for Emil Mendheim: In naturalization records recorded in Book E of the Superior Court of Muscogee County (Columbus) Georgia, Emil stated that he came to the USA in 1835. He reported that he left from Liverpool and came through the Port of New York. He was naturalized in Columbus, Georgia on December 23, 1848 and reported his age to be 31 at that time. We therefore assume he was born around 1817. We have found that Emil apparently also went by the name of Edward on many occasions. In June, 1841 Edward went into business manufacturing and importing "Segars" in New York City. There is evidence that he was in the Augusta, Ga. area around 1843. Then in 1846 Edward Mendheim witnessed the will of Levi Coleman in Columbus, Ga. A store that Emil apparently owned, Mendheim & Brothers dry goods, in Columbus was destroyed by fire in March 1847. He migrated to San Francisco in the early 1850's then on to New York where the first documentation we have found is him living there and filing for bankruptcy July 9, 1869. Beginning in 1872 and continuing until his death he is listed as dealing in men's clothing. In the 1880 census he is in the household of his sister Johanna Baronn. Emil died in New York on April 7, 1889. 2. ii. MORITZ MENDHEIM was born on 08 Jan 1819 in Cüstrin, Prussia. He died on 11 Sep 1883 in San Francisco, California, USA. 3. iii. BENJAMIN PHILLIP MENDHEIM was born on 25 Nov 1819 in Cüstrin, Prussia. He died on 29 Jun 1888 in New York. He married Adeline Simmons, daughter of Louis Simmons and Elizabeth LNU Simmons about 1850. She was born about 1833 in New York. She died on 31 Dec 1902 in New York, New York - Hotel Wellington. 4. iv. ISIDOR MENDHEIM was born on 19 Jul 1821 in Cüstrin, Prussia. Generation 1 (con't) Notes for Herman Mendheim: Herman Mendheim came to the USA in 1850 from Hamburg. He is listed on the San Francisco, California tax roles of 1862 and is living with Moritz in California in 1866. He was naturalized in US District Court in San Francisco on August 30, 1858 and from a passport application of 1864 we establish a birth date of December 27, 1827. Herman died May 16, 1901 in San Francisco and is buried in the Home of Peace Cemetery & Emanu-El Mausoleum / Jewish Cemetery in Colma, California (suburb of San Francisco). 6. viii. (HANNCHEN) JOHANNA MENDHEIM was born on 22 Oct 1831 in Cüstrin, Prussia. She died between 1910-1920 in Queens, Nassau, New York. She married Bernard Baronn about 1857 in California. He was born in 1824 in Prussia. He died on 15 Jul 1875 in New York. Generation 2 2. MORITZ 2 MENDHEIM (Philipp 1 ) was born on 08 Jan 1819 in Cüstrin, Prussia. He died on 11 Sep 1883 in San Francisco, California, USA. Notes for Moritz Mendheim: Moritz came to the US through the Port of New York on November 7, 1849 arriving on the ship Washington from Southampton (it's possible there was a stop in Bremen as well). He reported his age as 30 years and 11 months (projecting his birth year as 1818). While we believe he was in Columbus Ga. during the 1850 Federal Census ( M. Mendheim age 30), he was there in 1851. Records in Columbus show " Moritz, Benjamin and Isidor recovering money ($2.87½ each) from the city on May 31, 1851 (Book G of the Superior Court of Muscogee County. Moritz was naturalized in the New York Court of Common Pleas on October 10, 1855, a year prior to sailing to San Francisco October 14, 1856. Around 1875, as a dying wish of her mother, Moritz adopted a young lady named Kate from his homeland and she came over in May 1876. Kate went on a visit to NY in 1881 and was caught up in a love triangle with a married man. She committed suicide by an overdose of morphine in the St. James hotel on March 31, 1881. After going to San Francisco in 1856, Moritz lived there until he died in 1883. He is buried in the Home of Peace Cemetery & Emanu-El Mausoleum / Jewish Cemetery in Colma, California (suburb of San Francisco). Moritz Mendheim had the following child: i. KATE ASTERNBERGER 3 MENDHEIM was born in 1859 in Germany. She died on 31 Mar 1881 in New York City - St. James Hotel. 3. BENJAMIN PHILLIP 2 MENDHEIM (Philipp 1 ) was born on 25 Nov 1819 in Cüstrin, Prussia. He died on 29 Jun 1888 in New York. He married Adeline Simmons, daughter of Louis Simmons and Elizabeth LNU Simmons about 1850. She was born about 1833 in New York. She died on 31 Dec 1902 in New York, New York - Hotel Wellington. Notes for Benjamin Phillip Mendheim: Benjamin and another Mendheim, recorded as Fedor, came to the US through the Port of New York on October 14, 1841 arriving on the ship Howard from Hamburg. In November 1841 Benjamin and Isidor placed an ad in the Augusta Chronical looking for their brother Ernest (Emil) who was reported to have been living in the area in 1840-1841. This ad says they are from Cüstrin, Prussia. It appears that Benjamin had established a residence in Columbus, Georgia not long after his arrival. Sometime between 1841 and 1850 he married Adeline Simmons of New York. They were in the Columbus, Georgia 1850 Federal Census of Muscogee County. Benjamin's naturalization was recorded in Book E of the Superior Court of Muscogee County (Columbus) Georgia on

Benjamin was in Augusta, Georgia in 1870 listed as Philip Mendheim in the Federal Census. The census shows Philip with his wife and three children, Louis, Maurice and Pauline, ages 13 to 17. Since the children were born in Missouri and Tennessee, it appears Benjamin moved quite a bit, having lived in four states within a twenty year period. Also, there is a B. Mendheim on the 1865-1866 tax roles of South Carolina. In the 1880 Federal Census Benjamin is in Allendale, South Carolina. Ultimately, they wound up in New York City and Benjamin died there June 1888 with Adeline's death following in 1902. Benjamin Phillip Mendheim and Adeline Simmons had the following children: 7. i. LOUIS PHILLIPPE 3 MENDHAM was born about 1853 in Missouri. He died on 14 Apr 1923 in Laurelton, Long Island, New York. He married Alice Hudson Coe, daughter of Edward Henry Coe and Elizabeth Hudson Barnay on 28 Apr 1900 in Manhattan, New York County, New York. She was born on 10 Mar 1875 in San Francisco, California. She died on 05 May 1907 in San Francisco, California, USA (Age: 32). ii. MAURICE BALLARD MENDHAM was born on 21 Jan 1857 in Tennessee. He died on 07 Nov 1912 in Manhattan, New York, USA (Age: 55). He married Frances Cartwright on 28 Feb 1912 in Manhattan, New York, USA. She was born on 11 Mar 1889 in Saugerties, New York. Notes for Maurice Ballard Mendham: Maurice and Louis formed a company called Mendham Brothers "Bankers and Brokers" which dealt in property, grain, cotton, stocks and bonds. They had a seat on the N.Y. Stock Exchange beginning in 1894 and gave it up in 1910. Maurice married a ward of his named Frances Cartwright just months before his death. iii. ADA PAULINE MENDHAM was born about 1857 in Tennessee. She died on 25 Sep 1925 in Bexar County, Texas. She married (1) MR. BOSS in 1875 in New York City. She married (2) HENRY BROMFIELD MCCOBB JR., son of Henry Bromfield McCobb and Eliza H. Goodwin on 21 Aug 1883 in Manhattan, New York County, New York. He was born on 14 Oct 1851 in Cumberland County, Maine. Notes for Ada Pauline Mendham: Ada Pauline Mendham McCobb, was murdered in a San Antonio, Texas. boarding house in 1925 by a woman who was after her reported "fortune of jewels". 4. ISIDOR 2 MENDHEIM (Philipp 1 ) was born on 19 Jul 1821 in Cüstrin, Prussia. He died on 12 Jan 1891 in Dothan, Henry County, Alabama. He married (1) JUDITH B CULP, daughter of William Alexander Culp MD and Cynthia W. Smith on 24 Dec 1851 in Harris, Georgia. She was born in 1835 in South Carolina. Notes for Isidor Mendheim: We are confident Isidor arrived on on the Howard October 14, 1841 but, the first reference to Isidor we have found in the United States is an ad placed in the Augusta Chronical in November 1841. Benjamin and Isidor placed an ad in the Augusta Chronical looking for their brother Ernest (Emil) who was reported to have been living in the area in 1840-1841. Isidor married Judith Culp on Christmas eve 1851 in Harris County GA. The record was transcribed as: "Mendkins, (?) Isador Judith Culp 12/24/1851" Apparently Isidor and Judith moved relatively quickly to Henry County, Alabama as their first born

Isidor and Judith went on to have five (5) children: William, Rozelia (married William Kirkland), Isidore W., Albert and Belton. The 1860 Federal Census shows Isidor (now a dentist) with wife Judith and four children; William age 7, Rozelia age 5, Isidor (IW) age 3 and Albert age 1 living in Henry County, Alabama. Judith's brother Henry B. Culp, age 16, was at their home. Isidor signed up for the CSA's Alabama 37th Volunteer Regiment at Auburn, Alabama on March 22, 1862. He was part of Company A that was nicknamed the "Henry Volunteers" as many of the men in Company A were from Henry County. Isidor was discharged on August 6, 1862 in Columbus, Mississippi due to medical reasons. It states that he had Rheumatism and had not been of service for the previous 60 days. The description of Isidor by the discharging officer stated "He was born in Prussia in the State of is 37 years of age, 5 feet 4 inches high, fair complexion, blue eyes, light hair, and by occupation, when enlisted, a dentist." Further it states, "I certify that I have carefully examined the said Isidore Mindheim of Captain Green's Company and find him incapable of performing the duties of a soldier because of Rheumatism - He has not done any service three months. I recommend his discharge."" His second wife, Nancy Jane Mathews Mendheim, subsequently received a pension as a result of Isidor's service to the Confederate States of America. Judith died on July 19, 1870 at 33 years of age of unknown causes. Judith was not present for the 1870 census (Henry County, Alabama) but William's future wife, Minerva Roberts, and a couple of workers were there with the rest of the family. After Judith's death Isidor married Nance Jane Mathews. A reference of his marriage to Nancy Jane was published in 1873, which stated: 'MARRIED - A short time since, our genial friend Dr. I. Mendheim, suddenly disappeared from our quite little town, and we had just began to wouder what had become of him when he returned, looking so well he hardly resembled himself. And he did not return alone, but brought with him a yonng and blushing bride that he captured over about Clopton. Well, Doctor, we wish you much joy; may you and the wife live long and prosper, and may - and may - well, never mind.' - Henry County Register (Abbeville, Alabama Weekly Newspaper) Friday, February 14, 1873 In approximately 1880 Isidor, Nancy and their children apparently moved to Walton County, Florida for a brief period of time. Isidor and Nancy are listed in the 1880 Federal Census of both Houston County, Alabama (with Isidor and Judith's children as well as William's children) and Walton County, Florida (with Isidor and Nancy's children). Isidor and Nancy had six (6) children: Hortense, Herman, Gillispe, Irene, Karl and Colo. Isidor, along with William P., William J. Kirkland (Rosa's husband), IW (Isidore White) and Albert filed for homestead property. Isidor filed for property located in what is now Dothan, Alabama and received the title in 1891. Mr. Kirkland filed for property adjacent to Isidor while IW filed for property close by in Dothan. William filed in Geneva County, Alabama, and Albert filed in Holmes County, Florida. In 1887 Isidor and Nancy were two of the nine founding members of the First Baptist Church of Dothan, Alabama. In 1891a reference to Isidor's death was written in a local Dothan Alabama newspaper stating: 'Death: Dr. I. Mendheim passed quietly away at his home one mile south of Dothan on last Tuesday morning. We do not know his exact age, but he was one of the oldest citizens of this country, and almost every body knew him. He was for a long time a successful Dentist at Abbeville. A few years ago when his manhood had withered away, he moved to the "piney woods" and settled on a little farm near here before Dothan was known. He has for the past few years been an object of pity, and to see him staggering about the streets, jerking with old age, and drawn over, would attract the sympathy and draw tears from anyone. He was a consistent member of the Baptist Church and loved his God. He was known by hundreds of people all over this country who will remember how he looked in his declining years. He has been known as "old Doctor Mendheim" for the last 25 years or longer. Such was his title before the writer outgrew the

She married Isidor Mendheim on December 24, 1851 in Harris County, Georgia (the same county where her parents were married 23 years earlier). Judith and Isidor moved to Henry, County Alabama and had five children between 1853 and 1864. Judith died at a young age (33) in 1870 from unknown causes. He was born in 1824 in Prussia. He died on 15 Jul 1875 in New York. Notes for (Hannchen) Johanna Mendheim: Johanna came to the US with Marianne and Rosalie. From a passport application we get her birth date as October 9, 1837. Johanna went to California sometime between 1850 and 1857 and married Bernhard Baronn. They had two children, Otto and Agnes, in California in 1958 and 1960 respectively. The family then moved to New York where they had three more children, Gertrude, Hugo and Laura (1861, 1862, 1870). From New York city directories of the time, it appears that Bernhard died in 1876. In 1880 Johanna was a widow in New York with their children and Emil was living with her. Bernard Baronn and (Hannchen) Johanna Mendheim had the following children: i. ALFRED 3 BARONN was born in Jan 1854. He died on 09 Nov 1869 in Kings County, New York. ii. iii. OTTO BARONN was born in 1858 in California. AGNES BARONN was born in 1860 in California. She died after 1933. She married Isaac Bernhard Westheimer, son of Bernhard Westheimer and Rachel Hasberg on 12 Feb 1903 in Manhattan, New York County, New York. He was born about 1862 in New York. He died in Jun 1967 in Hallwood, Accomack, Virginia, United States of America. Notes for Alice Coe Mendham: Alice Coe Mendham married Webster C. Powell who was a professor at Dartmouth and later a part of our diplomatic corps. Alice was very active in the "progressive" education movement and in 1934 she started a well known school in Maryland called Green Acres. Most of her career Alice carried her maiden name in her professional life. They had one son (that died at an early age) and two daughters, Nina and Gail. 8. William is listed as a widower and Henry had been adopted by the C.S. Kincey family. Sometime after 1880 and before 1990 Ed went out on his own; it is reported that Ella died; and Oscar was "taken in" by the William McKissick family. William applied for a homestead in Geneva County, Alabama on January 17, 1889 stating he took possession of the property in 1885. On March 14, 1891 Sarah L E Mendheim ("widow of William P Mendheim") filed final papers for the homestead claim and the "homestead patent" was issued January 18, 1892. Notes for William Oscar Mendheim: Oscar (William Oscar) Mendheim was born February 19, 1975 to William and Minerva Mendheim. His mother died when he was about 4 years old. His father apparently wasn't up to the task of raising small children alone since Oscar was taken in and raised by William and Catherine McKissick. Oscar married Jesse Mae Olliff and they had 15 children. Four of the children died as infants and the remaining 11 made it to adulthood. He lived in Houston County most of his life, first in Ashford and later in Dothan. Oscar was my grandfather and all ready an "old man" (72 years old) when I was born. I was able to spend time with him though as he didn't die until 1972, just before my first child was born. In the later years of his life, he refused to have cataracts removed and went blind from them. Although blind his mind was very sharp until the very end. He lived a remarkable span of our historical times, from Civil War reconstruction and the horse and buggy days to having men land on the moon! iv.
