New construction of the bank Sparkasse Mühlacker Communication with the environment Demolition and new construction of the bank Sparkasse Mühlacker after expert s report found that spacious and structural requirements and defects could not be met by measures of redevelopment. The bank Sparkasse Mühlacker, branch Pforzheim/Calw, did not meet the spacious and technical requirements anymore after taking over additional administrative tasks from smaller branches. The now needed room programme with appropriate IT equipment could only have been improvised in the existing building. Moreover, urgent redevelopment measures were necessary rainproofness of the natural stone façade, heat insulation all in all very extensive measures, so that the bank decided in autumn 2004 to demolish the building which dated back to the 1950s and to construct a new one at the same place. The architects KBK Belz Lutz, Stuttgart concept convinced the builder and was supported by the City of Mühlacker. A new building at the old place - though nothing quite as it used to be. A completely new character supposed to set an example: transparent, friendly, modern, communicative - a continuous invitation towards the client. A terracotta coloured clay tile façade, a lot of glass and for the rest an architecture that does without a lot of vocabulary and does not try to overload the building with anything unnecessary - that s what makes the difference of the new building compared to the heaviness of previous bank architecture. No town development plan According to 34 of the Town and Country Planning Code, the architect was obliged to integrate the new building in the existing environment, but thanks to non existent requirements of a town development plan the hillside location of the estate, that s to say the premises behind the old building that mount as high as 9 m, could be integrated in the new construction planning. This meant a different building structure that was integrated as a superordinate planning requirement in the architects planning concept. This didn t change the fact, though, that the street space, including the course of the road, had to be rebuilt after the demolition. The new building now closes again the gap in the street space of the pedestrians area formed by the demolition, unspectacularly and with the same proportionateness as the old building. An oriel opening out of the façade takes up the bent course of the pedestrian zone and leads to the town hall place. The above described slope topography on the back side was used to position a two-storey parking deck into the slope.
Above floats, designed transversely and used as a conference room and cafeteria, a glass structure, looking out over the green and covered by a robust and dynamic steel roof. Invitation towards the customer The interaction with the heterogeneous, intra-urban building stock is looked for in proportionateness and materials. The earthly material of the clay tiles on the one hand interacts with the extensive window areas, which transport a lot of luminosity into the building, on the other hand. The long lengths of the warm coloured MOEDING LONGOTON clay tile façade (up to 1m70) allow to create horizontally laid structures without having to underline this effect by additional elements such as fascia from different materials. Axes, window widths and other prominent caesura are taken up by the long clay tiles and thus make the structure of the façade comprehensible. Different tile lengths, prefabricated in the factory in accordance with the architects demands, subdivide the façade appearance in various ways and make the functions readable: the closed clay tile façade with its small size oriels on the Northern gable side, skeleton like disintegrated office façades, the big oriel structured by horizontal fascia in the Bahnhofstraße. The Southern gable side shows a variant of its own. The in proportionateness and structure difficultly integratable façade of the staircase is played down with rainscreen baguettes façade elements from single clay tiles, made in one piece with lengths up to 1m60 and threaded on aluminium profiles with end plates. Thus, integration in the overall appearance and a partial shading of the glass façades are achieved at the same time. Together with the completely vitrified transversal building on the garden side, the whole exterior shell conciliates the entire range of the interplay between closed and open parts of the façade, between clay tiles and glass the building s characteristic design concept chosen by the architect. Vertical Communication The plot of land with its hillside location suggested itself to communicate from bottom to top. The inner room structure of the building then is marked by an airspace along with a water wall that connects all upper floors with the customers hall on the ground floor. In conjunction with the generous alignment of glazings in the connecting corridor walls and a rooflight glazing above the airspace, an open, communicative and light-flooded interior room is created. The further finishing is limited to only a few materials. Dark floors, smooth, white
plaster walls along with extensive wood covering, glass elements and few well placed red parts mark the character of the new bank building. The appearance of the somewhat little construction volume should not be overloaded by a diversity of materials. Terracotta-beige-coloured clay tile façades, black-brown metallic window profiles with wooden window sashes and silver inner frames, glass not more. The result: a building with a catchy identity that communicates with its environment in a modern language of proportionateness and materiality. 5.309 signs

South elevation: In the staircase, the LONGOTON clay tile façade is broken up by baguettes for illumination. Thanks to the tiles available up to 3 m length, the structure of the façade is made comprehensible by taking up axes and windows. Less would be more. Thriftily used creative elements that do without a confusing diversity of materials, organize the North Façade. Oriels arranged in exact geometry provide it with plasticity; the grooved surface integrates it cautiously in the wall area. The construction is determined by the tile length. LONGOTON clay tiles of up to 3 m length are available to cover e.g. closed oriels without covering up the butt joints. The clay tile façade s design quality thus makes new planning liberties possible. Architects: KBK Architekten Belz Lutz, Stuttgart Photo: Rolf Sturm, Landshut
According to the topography of the estate, the building mounts towards the East. Here is also situated the entrance to the parking decks that are cut into the slope on the backside. The main entrance for customers and visitors is from the pedestrian area at ground level. Architects: KBK Architekten Belz Lutz, Stuttgart Photo: Rolf Sturm, Landshut
On the back side, a transverse glass building floats above the upper parking deck, which in its effect is orientated exclusively towards the outdoor garden. Here can distinctly be seen how the horizontal structure of the balustrade fascia of the Eastern façade are taken up without additional elements, only by the overlengths of the LONGOTON tiles, in the otherwise partly unstructured Southern façade.
