Bonaventure Compain dit Lespérance Gail Moreau-DesHarnais, 3 March 2016 (gfmoreau1@aol.com) The parish records for Poiters are online at www.archives.departement86.fr In addition to the various parishes for Poitiers, there is also a dépouillement de registres paroissiaux for Poitiers which contains fichiers [cards] on many of the individuals in the parish records - not all but this is helpful in locating a family and parish at a given time. Bonaventure Compain dit Lespérance, son of Hierosme [Jérôme] Compain and Suzanne Robert, was baptized 10 May 1669 in St-Jean-de-Montierneuf [St-Jean-L Évangéliste, quartier (neighborhood) of Montierneuf], Poitiers, Poitou (Vienne) France. [He was in Détroit between 14 November 1707 and 13 January 1710.] Immediate family of Bonaventure Compain A marriage contract between Hierosme Compain and Suzanne Robert was drawn up by Georges Marrot on 22 January 1658. Emery Robert, Suzanne s father and a pierrroyeur, was deceased by that date; the Robert family was living in the Saint-Lazare area; Hierosme Compain was a garçon bonnetier [apprentice (?) bonnet and hosiery maker]. Hierosme s father, Pierre Compain not stated as deceased, was a meunier [miller]. However, his mother s spouse was stated to be Etienne Mothois/Motois [www.geneanet.org, Françoise Hovaere]. Hierosme Compain, son of Pierre Compain and Marguerite Govin/Gauvin, married Suzanne Robert, daughter of Emery Robert and Philippe Servant, 3 February 1658 in Saint-Germain, Poiters. Among the witnesses were Jacques Compain (brother of Hierosme); Étienne Motois (step-father of Hierosme); Marguerite Govin (Hierosme s mother identified in the marriage act); Mathurin Barangier (husband of Jeanne Robert, Suzanne s sister). Hierosme Compain and Suzanne Robert were the parents of six children: 1. Étienne Compain was baptized 10 March 1659 in St-Jean-L Évangéliste. His godfather was Étienne Motois, his father s step-father. 2. Philippe Compain (daughter) was baptized 16 March 1660 in Saint-Germain. Her godparents were Jacques Compain, her uncle, and Philippe Servant, her maternal grandmother. 3. Jehan Compain was baptized 23 October 1661 in St-Jean-L Évangéliste. His godparents were Jean Pouvraceau/Pouvrasseau (uncle; half-brother of Hierosme Compain), and Hillaire Robert, his aunt. 4. Gilles Compain was baptized 6 August 1663 in St-Jean-L Évangéliste. 5. Jacquette Compain was baptized 28 July 1666 in Saint-Germain. Mathurin Barangier, her uncle through marriage to her aunt Jeanne Robert, was her godfather. Jacquette Compain married Nicolas Rousseau 1 June 1682 in St-Jean-l Évangéliste. Her father Hierosme Compain was present, as were her uncles Jacques Compain, Pouvraceau/Pouvrasseau, and Jacques Robert. 1

6. Bonnaventure Compain was baptized 10 May 1669 in St-Jean-L Évangéliste. He married (1) Catherine Badaillac, 10 June 1706, Montréal; (2) Catherine Poupard, 27 October 1715, Montréal. Suzanne Robert was buried (St-Jean-L Évangéliste) in the cemetery of Saint-Germain on 23 April 1682 at about 50 years of age. Hierosme Compain remarried on 20 July 1682 to Jeanne Boineau (marriage act) / Boileau (in baptismal act of daughter, her own burial act, and marriage act of her daughter). Jacques Compain and Jean Pouvraceau/Pouvrasseau were witnesses, as well as Nicolas Rousseau, his new son-inlaw, who was the only one to sign. Their daughter Suzanne Compain was baptized 5 April 1685 in St-Jean-l Évangéliste. Jacquette Compain was her godmother. In the parish of St-Jean-L Évangéliste Suzanne Compain married Mathurin Richard, widow of Marguerite Manseau, from the parish of Saint-Germain on 20 November 1713. Both her parents were stated to be deceased. One of her witnesses was said to be her sister Marie Compain (could this be Jacquette since no sister named Marie has been found to date). Suzanne Compain was buried in the cemetery of Saint-Germain on 8 February 1747 in the presence of her husband. Hierosme [no last name stated], a meunier [miller], was buried from the church of St-Jean-de- Montierneuf in the cemetery of St-Germain on 31 October 1686, no age given, and no witnesses listed. [A number of the burials in this time period only had the first name of the deceased.] It is possible that this is Hierosme Compain because no further acts have been found concerning him in either Saint- Germain or St-Jean-de-Montierneuf. Jeanne Boileau, widow of Hierosme Compain, was buried in the cemetery of Saint-Germain (from the church of St-Jean-LÉvangéliste) on 5 November 1707. She was said to be 75 years old. Compain Family The first records for the Compain family are from Saint-Germain, Poiters, beginning on 5 May 1598. On this date, Pierre Compain signed a baptismal act with a flourish. Nothing earlier has been found to date. The Compain family probably did not come from the parish of Saint-Germain. A Jehanne Compaing signed a baptismal act in Saint-Germain on 21 January 1604. 1. Louis Compain, son of Pierre Compain and Perrine Ayraud, was baptized 23 November 1604. P Compain père signed the baptismal act. Louis Boutin, the priest from Montierneuf (indicated in act) was present and signed. [To date, no early records before 1641 have been found for Montierneuf.] 2. Pierre Compain, son of Pierre Compain and Perrine Ayraud, was baptized 29 October 1608. P Compain père signed the act. 3. Pierre Compain, son of Vincent Compain and Marie Fretier, was baptized 14 November 1608. Pierre Compain was the godfather and signed. Same signature as P Compain père. This is the only act found to date for this couple. [The father s name was erroneously transcribed as Marin in the fichier online from the Vienne Archives.] Because Pierre Compain was the godfather and signed, it is very possible Pierre Compain and Vincent Compain were brothers. 2

www.archives.departement86.fr, état civil, registres paroissiaux et état civil, Poitiers, Saint-Germain, 1608-1613, Baptêmes collection communale Vue 4 4. Pierre Compain, son of Pierre Compain and Perrette Ayraud, was baptized 2 September 1611. P Compain père signed the act. To date, no acts for the Compain family have been found between 2 September 1611 and 28 November 1632. The next set of acts pertaining to the Compain family are from 1632 on. Between this date and 1649 records have been found for three Compain families: Louis Compain and Jeanne Jehan/Jahan; Pierre Compain and Mathurine Orillard; and Pierre Compain and Marguerite Govin/Gauvin. Louis and Pierre Compain are probably the sons of Pierre Compain and Perrine/Perrette Ayraud; the second Pierre Compain is the son of Vincent Compain and Marie Fretier, as shown in his marriage contract by Georges Marrot, dated 1 February 1632 in Poitiers. No church marriage records have been found for any of the above couples. However, thanks to GeneaNet [www.geneanet.org] and a transcription by Françoise Hovaere of the marriage contract of Pierre Compain and Marguerite Govin drawn up by notary Georges Marrot on 1 February 1632 in Poitiers [côte 4E/12/42], a little more information is known about the family. [Below are the signatures from the marriage contract sent to me by Françoise Hovaere on 28 February 2016.] In this contract Pierre Compain was said to be a marchand meunier [merchant miller] and the son of Vincent Compain and the deceased Marie Frestier. Marguerite Govin was said to be the daughter of the deceased André Govin and and Renée Chillaud. Pierre Compain and Marguerite Govin/Gauvin were the parents of three children: 1. Jacques Compain was baptized 26 October 1633 in Saint-Germain. He married Françoise Tessereau on 14 February 1656 in St-Jean-L Évangéliste. Louis Compain, who signed with a 3

flourish; Pierre Hillaire (godfather of Françoise Motois, half-sister of Jacques Compain; Étienne Motoy/Motois, stepfather; Marguerite Gauvin, mother, were among the witnesses. 2. Hierosme Compain was baptized 1 July 1635 in Saint-Germain. His father was present and signed the register. www.archives.departement86.fr, état civil, registres paroissiaux et état civil, Poitiers, Saint-Germain, 1627-1640, Baptêmes collection communale Vue 67. 3. Jeanne Compain was baptized 4 December 1637 in Saint-Germain. Her father signed the register. She was buried 25 June 1743 in the cemetery of Saint-Germain from the church of St- Jean-L Évangéliste. Pierre Compain was buried in August 1638 from the church of Saint-Germain [Poitiers, Saint-Germain, 1621-1667, Sépultures - collection communale-vue 15]. Louis Compain and the surviving Pierre Compain [impossible to say if it is the one born in 1608 or the one born in 1611] also married and had children. Louis Compain and Jeanne Jahan [she was baptized 24 July 1611 in Saint-Germain] Louis Compain was an apparaturum?? Regis [later a royal notary] 1. Sébastienne Compain was baptized 1 June 1633 in Saint-Germain. The godfather was Pierre Compain (occupation given), probably the brother of Louis. Louis Compain signed. 2. François Compain was baptized 19 August 1635. His godfather was François Roy who was present for several family baptisms and weddings. Louis Compain signed. Pierre Compain and Mathurine Orillard 1. Charles Compain was baptized 28 November 1632 in Saint-Germain. 2. Louise Compain was baptized 6 July 1634 in Saint-Germain. Her godfather was Louis Compain who signed with a flourish. She married François Boussiot 6 August 1651 in St-Jean- L Évangéliste. Some of the witnesses were Louis Compain, uncle and royal notary; François Roy, l aisné. 3. Marie Compain was baptized 13 October 1636 in Saint-Germain. She married Gabriel Robert, a maitre paulmier [sic], 13 February 1657 in St-Jean-L Évangéliste. [Marriage contract by Georges Marrot, 12 February 1657 - www.geneanet.org- Françoise Hovaere]. 4. Jeanne Compain was baptized 3 May 1639 in Saint-Germain. She married Nicolas Raffin 7 January 1666 in St-Jean-L Évangéliste. Some of the witnesses were Pierre Compain, her father who signed; François Roy, her uncle; Gabriel Robert, her brother-in-law. She was buried 20 July 4

1686 in the cemetery of St-Opportune after a long illness. Her husband, a master serrurier [locksmith] was deceased. 5. Pierre Compain was baptized 10 April 1642 in Saint-Germain, but the family was said to be from the parish of Montierneuf. 4. Jacquette Compain was baptized 29 November 1647 in St-Jean-L Évangéliste. She married Étienne Ludon 12 May 1680 in St-Jean-L Évangéliste. She was buried 23 February 1684 in the cemetery of Saint-Germain. 5. Pierre Compain was baptized 25 September 1650 in St-Jean-L Évangéliste. Jacques Compain and Françoise Tessereau were the parents of ten children: 1. Étienne Compain was baptized 6 February 1657 in Saint-Germain. He married Jacquette Chauvais on 2 November 1687 in St-Jean-L Évangéliste. He was buried 24 August 1689 in the cemetery of Saint-Germain. 2. George Compain was baptized 10 November 1658 in Saint-Germain. 3. Marie Compain was baptized 13 February 1660 in Saint-Germain. 4. Estienne [sic] Compain was baptized 25 January 1662 in Saint-Germain. 5. Son [cannot decipher name] was baptized 25 March 1663 in Saint-Germain. 6. Marguerite Compain was baptized 24 November 1664 in Saint-Germain. Her godmother was Marguerite Govin who signed. Marguerite Compain married (1) Charles Sault/Saux/Sceaux/Seaux, a maître bonnetier, 23 November 1693 in Saint-Germain; (2) Jean Boy/Boué 18 November 1710 in Saint-Germain. Marguerite Compain was buried 9 December 1733 in the cemetery of Saint-Germain in the presence of her husband. Charles Sceaux, her first husband, was buried 5 July 1710 in the presence of Étienne Compain and Charles Sceau, his son. www.archives.departement86.fr, état civil, registres paroissiaux et état civil, Poitiers, Saint-Germain, 1654-1667, Baptêmes collection communale Vue 92. 7.
