William s widow Charlotte died on 9 th November 1912 and was buried with her husband in plot K33 on 13 th November 1912. The Blackburn transcription reads:- In affectionate remembrance of WILLIAM BERRY of Hipperholme who died April 8 th 1892 aged 47 years. Also of CHARLOTTE wife of the above who died November 9 th 1912 aged 80 years Her probate reads:- BERRY Charlotte of Netherton Wakefield widow died 9 November 1912 Probate Wakefield 31 December to Flora White (wife of Dyson White) and Frances Alice Walker (wife of Fred Walker) Effects 2148 17s 4d Young Herbert Berry, Harry and Ada s son, died aged just 12 years on 21 st November 1913. He became the first occupant of plot P2 when he was buried there on 24 th November 1913. His sister Janet Berry married Frank Naylor at St Matthew s Church, Lightcliffe on 14 th August 1915. Coincidentally his father was called John Berry Naylor, a Weaver as was Janet s father, Harry Berry. Twenty three year old Frank Naylor s residence was 13 Field Top, Bailiffe Bridge whereas 26 year old Janet s address was just Field Top. Apart from the Berry sons Kenneth and John Raymond Berry it is difficult to tell whether any other members of the family served in WW1. Frank Naylor would seem to have been a candidate but Again it is not easy to find or verify events after this time so again just information about two graves is now included. 43
Two more St Matthew s Churchyard plots belonging to the Berry family Plot B59 This is the cross on Herbert and Maria Berry s gravestone. It has already been recorded that they and an infant son were buried here. 44
Two of Herbert and Maria Berry s unmarried adult children were also interred in the plot when they died. Laura Berry was buried with her parents on 3 rd February 1931 after she died on 31 st January 1931. Then after her brother George Berry died on 21 st September 1934 he became the last occupant of this plot when he was buried in it on 25 th September 1934. 45
Plot P2 Herbert and Maria Berry s married son Harry owned his own plot. It first occupant was his 12 year old son Herbert as already detailed. Some years later young Herbert was joined by his mother Ada Berry when she was interred on 17 th July 1935 followed by his father Harry Berry who was buried on 8 th June 1944. 46
But this was not the last burial in this plot. When Harry and Ada Berry s married daughter, Janet Naylor, died on 15 th October 1956 she too was buried in this plot. Previous to that her husband Frank Naylor s ashes had been interred there on 7 th May 1952 after he passed away on 1 st May 1952. Both Frank and Janet Naylor had probate records. NAYLOR Frank of Brentwood 257 Wakefield-road Bailiffe Bridge Brighouse Yorkshire died 1 May 1952 Administration Wakefield 31 October to Janet Naylor widow and Mary Wrightson (wife of Stephen John Wrightson). Effects 2424 18s 5d NAYLOR Janet of 219 Wakefield-road Bailiffe Bridge Brighouse Yorkshire widow died 13 October 1956 at Brentwood 257 Wakefield-road Bailiffe Bridge Brighouse Administration Wakefield 5 November to Dorothy Lister (wife of James Lister) and Mary Wrightson (wife of Stephen John Wrightson). Effects 5205 19s 4d Herbert and Maria Berry s son John and his wife Fanny both passed away in 1956. There is no indication as to where they were buried if indeed they were. But they did both leave probate records. BERRY John of 5 George-street Hipperholme Brighouse Yorkshire died 7 February 1956 at St John Hospital Halifax, Probate Wakefield 14 April to Fanny Berry widow. Effects 805 3s 3d BERRY Fanny of Ward F4 St John s Hospital Halifax widow died 7 December 1956 Probate Wakefield 8 February [1957] to Clifford Ayrton Berry commercial clerk and Raymond Berry engineer, Effects 1112 7s 7d. 47
Again very many Berry relatives of the WW1 Berry soldiers seem to have lived in and around Lightcliffe and had connections with St Matthew s Church and its churchyard. Because of all these Berry and Lee relatives this biography of Corporal Kenneth Berry and Gunner John Raymond Berry, turned into a very, very long story. Hope you kept up and enjoyed it!! And if you know the answer to when and where Corporal Kenneth Berry was killed/died please let the website know. Thank you. D.M.Barker March 2016 48
