In this session, we will demonstrate how smooth the transition can be when working between traditional CAD and BIM. Attendees will learn: About the BIM process and get a look at the technologies harnessed by embracing a BIM workflow. How you can communicate flawlessly between AutoCAD and BIM software like ARCHICAD. How to import and export DWG and build your project from AutoCAD drawings into a smart model. The similarities between AutoCAD and ARCHICAD s drafting tools, and how easy the transition can be within your work methodology. About the financial implications for making the transition to BIM. 16 Home Sweet BIM If you re an architect or home builder taking on new or renovation designs for homes, you re discovering a new kind of residential client. Today s homeowners are tapping into popular social media sites like Houzz and Pinterest, where literally millions of design ideas and photos are searchable and available. More informed and sophisticated than ever, residential owners are requesting materials, detailing, and spatial characteristics they would like their architects to consider. You need a way to clearly, quickly, and easily communicate your design ideas to clients, in both 2D and 3D. This is where BIM s powerful visualization capabilities come into play, as architect and client collectively work to discover the vision and context for the home. BIM technologies let you model and detail as much as needed, and also share high level design concepts with your clients. 11
Thanks to technology like GRAPHISOFT BIMx, sharing models in real-time in person or virtually helps architects and clients communicate more powerfully than ever before. Join us to learn how to leverage a streamlined BIM workflow, resulting in clear file sharing, robust model details, and happier clients. Learning Objectives attendees learn how to: 1. Better engage residential clients and project teams using BIMx s enhanced communication tools in the field. 2. Identify how BIM streamlines and expedites the construction document phase. 3. Take advantage of key factors surrounding BIM as it gains more and more traction with residential architecture firms. 4. Leverage BIM to easily incorporate homeowner requests for sustainable and energyefficient designs and enhance creativity in design. 5. Pull quantities from the model for QTO 17 Small Firms Do It Better with BIM There is a widely shared perception that small firms and sole practitioners cannot take advantage of Building Information Modeling due to such factors as its cost, complexity, training time, and productivity for small projects. But BIM is an affordable, effective tool for small firms to optimize design processes, communicate ideas, streamline documentation, and sell designs through elegant visualization. This presentation will demonstrate how BIM has enhanced smaller practices and enabled them to be more efficient. Participants will see first hand the benefits of BIM and how this technology is better positioning smaller firms to compete in the ever evolving architecture industry. The learning objectives for this session are: Identify the specific benefits of a BIM-enabled process for small firms. Discover first-hand how a BIM workflow can act as a catalyst for creating a collaborative approach to sustainable design on projects of all sizes. Learn how to leverage the model for more effective communication.< Learn how your practice can implement BIM in a way that meets your specific needs and goals. 12
18 New Dimensions in BIM This presentation will focus on new developments in BIM tools and technologies. The use of intelligent building materials in BIM elements offers faster, more accurate drawing production for details, sections and elevations, as well as more accurate energy modeling. Integrated energy modeling, directly from the BIM model, provides for sustainability analysis in the early stages of design. New 3D visualization technologies allow you quickly communicate your designs with clients and other non-bim stakeholders even on tablets and smartphones. We will also cover recent BIM technologies allow for improved workflows with external consultants. Learning Objectives: Understand how the use of intelligent building materials within BIM elements can provide more accurate energy modeling, as well as improving Construction Document generation Understand how integrated Building Energy Models (BEMs) can be generated directly from BIM models, during the early stages of design, where it can have the most impact on sustainability. Understand how new 3D viewing technology allows BIM modelers to rapidly communicate their designs with others using computers, tablets or smartphones. This allows owners, consultants and reviewers to readily identify issues concerning natural light and exterior views, accessibility, structural design, building security, and other issues concerning the safety and welfare of the occupants. Understand how new BIM tools can be used to provide improved workflow with external consultants. 13
